The most boring class for me was advanced linear algebra. I hated it so much. It was all proofs and theorems and I learned nothing new from the previous linear algebra class I took. That's when I decided to drop the math major to a math minor.
Ha!! I was just thinking of going to school for something like political theory. Thanks John & Ana for keeping me from wasting my life! Say I want to be a Young Turk, or have my own political show/voice/campaign? I just kind of pulled my head out of the sand to political and world news/events about a year ago, however Im very smart and catch on pretty quick.
@krisreckner Oh I'm not against poli sci courses. I did both undergrad and graduate school for that... just political theory specifically I'm not a big fan of. - John
Econometrics is the most boring class I've ever taken. Yes, econometrics is a thing. It sucks even more when the prof just reuses overheads from previous years, just reads them to the class, and occasionally fills in the words that have been rubbed off. One class he re-did the lecture from the previous class, not realizing that it was the same material. We the students realized it after about an hour. It was hard to tell because he never ended his lectures on a complete thought. It was continuous
The most boring class I ever took in college has been Elementary Latin II. Not because of the subject, I love Latin (it's my minor), but it was all review for me and the professor would call on me once or twice a week for a class that meets 4 times a week for about an hour. Not fun. It may have been more enjoyable if I was actually able to participate or something.
HUM 1020 (Freshman Humanities) and PAD 6701 Quantatative Analysis for Social Sciences (AKA Graduate Stats for Public Administration) were both pretty boring, but the WORST BY FAR had to be SPN 1120 and SPN 1121 (Freshman Spanish I and 2). I swear if I meet the jackass that proposed the law saying that you need foreign language to get a college degree in Florida, I'm fuckin him/her up on sight.
I originally thought this girl intelligent, thought provoking and sexy, but she now looks tired and thought numbing. Above all she does not look sexy any more. Dare I say, she looks like a middle aged Armenian/Jewish mama with lank unattractive hair. I am going to duck now to avoid the flack from her undoubted fan club. But hey! I'm entitled to my opinion, just as she continuously expresses her opinion.
Macroeconomics. Not only were the class super boring but the prof tested completely from lecture so his exams were mega rape because it was hard to stay fully alert during class and the book was useless when it came to studying.
One of my favourite classes was art history. I even kept the ginormous text book I had to buy for the class but we hardly used. I'm not an artist at all but the teacher I had was phenomenal and the he made the lectures amazing.
@CatMommy84 The professor makes a world of difference. I've TA'd the same subjects for different professors and its night and day for the students. - John
@tytuniversity Exactly. I really lucked out with that professor. He was brand new and eager to share all his knowledge (you know the type). I only went to a state school (SUNY Canton) but a lot of my professors were amazing. I had wanted to take abnormal psych (applied to my major but not required) but I sat one class with the professor and I wanted to tear my freaking hair out. They only had one ab psych professor and he was it unfortunately. I dropped the class.
The answer would probably be ... my class. I look out and see them falling asleep or texting and just have to resist the urge to pack up my stuff and leave.
Political theory is great Imho if you are interested in how things work. Great way to learn about human nature and what incentivizes behavior and what theories have the most positive or negative externalities.
Is.. Ana trying to use the show to have dates with men? Who does this woman think she is? She's clearly tweaking on some serious psychological delusion of grandeur.
LOVE poli-sci classes! Hated anything math related, never saw the point in why I had to learn something I never had to use and would forget anyway after the semester, which came true. Im glad I learned algebra!
The worst class I've taken so far has got to be cultural geography. It's not even a real subject honestly, like it talks about really obvious things like if you want a building to get attention it should be visible. No fucking shit like someone would build an invisible building and expect attention...........
Yes, the teacher makes the entire difference. One out of three teachers cannot make political science theory or methodology any fun. some manage to make it dreadful.
My worst class was Introduction to Pharmacology. We had lectures telling us how to carry out the lab we were supposed to have the following day, yet due to poor timetabling, we had already done it. The lecturer never interacted with us, so the class never had any respect for her and became very loud and noisy to the point that we cannot hear what she was saying. Unfortunately we couldn't skip the lecture since my uni always takes attendance. I have another class with her this semester...
Um... "plato and socrates" aren't "like 60 pages or something". Plato, who wrote ABOUT Socrates, has hundreds of pages-worth of written work in his dialogues. Of Socrates' writings there survive ZERO, if there ever were any.
@DrQuijano Yes, his complete works are not exactly short. In comparison to modern academic texts we had to read in graduate school, however, they were very, very brief, and thus a nice change. - John
I dare you to attempt to sit through a three hour Soil Mechanics Class. Some lad has put up lectures on youtube if you want to see for yourself what it is, but basically in simple English it's the maths of how dirt works. Trust me unless you lived through it you cannot comprehend how mind numbingly boring, boring things can be.
My best Class was Structural Scheme Design it was awesome because they just gave you a brief like design outline of a stadium, bridge or theatre and you had free reign.
@tytuniversity The funny thing is, I was actually considering becoming a gynecologist. I was honestly expecting there to be more guys for that reason, too.
I like political theory and it's really important to have that knowledge about past thinkers and how ideology's evolved if you want to understand todays society's. As Issac Newton once said:"If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants."
(2) No! I want to learn something useful, like math and science. I want to study how to create things from nature, and how to protect nature (Lib I am) I want to create and sell things to help the poor! I want to create things to save peoples lives! I want to travel the fucking globe and preach wisdom! Get the children riled-up and excited about what they can do! As the essay "self reliance" pointed-out: everyone has their own mind!
@tytuniverity I absolutely despise history classes of any kind! I love history, I read 1,000 page biography of Adolph Hitler for Christs sake, but when professors tell me that I must know the names of all of these people of history, and I must find it in the book, rather than them just explaining what they want us to know about them, that pisses me off! My major isn't in politics or history, because It's a waste of money in my opinion. If I want to learn about people, I can research myself! (2)
I take politics, and the theory side is dull - agreed. I also take philosophyðics which is interesting. English lit is creative and interesting... And British and American History... Ehhh.. Oh god.
The worst classes I have ever taken have been western civilization and introduction to business. They just sucked so bad. When I got thinking about it, the reason why these classes sucked so bad was because of the teacher. I've taken classes that other students found boring and the difference between me and the other students is that I go and talk to my teachers. The more I went to go see my teachers the more I enjoyed their classes. Now my fav classes are anthro and all my science classes.
worst lecture i ever was on was a hour lecture about protists sexual reproduction. But the class biology class about the 5 kingdoms wasnt so bad but that lecture was a pain, fungus and bacteria was more fun to hear about then the protists, my bet is that most ppl dont even know what a protist is and it is a reason for that.
I am a graphic design major and I enjoy designing, but this professor was this old woman who acted like she was this god like designer and berated people openly in class in front of say 20 other students because the circle the used had a diameter of 4 inches and not 3.5 inches, just to state an example. It was an intro course and most of the people took it as an elective. She was just such a bitch that I could not enjoy the class.
Most boring class I ever took? Accounting. Had a professor that spoke English with a strong Pakistani accent, but had a way of speaking that was like Ben Stein. Imagine trying to follow the exciting rules of accounting listening to that? I went to class just to take the quizzes from the stuff I learned paying attention to my TA at the end of the week and reading a bit, but during the lecture, played Gameboy just to stay awake.
I took history of political thought, ancient to renaissance. And the class was so good I elected to take enlightenment to contemporary as well. Perhaps I liked it because the class was set up on a discussion model, or perhaps my professor was just very good. Either way, I count those classes among my most rewarding experiences in college.
Data modeling is boring as hell. Algebra is pretty interesting. Never had political science as a subject, but I went to some lectures and it didn't seem that bad.
I liked art history, but probably because it was taught by head of the art dept. and his lectures were really great. It wasn't my major, but I took 3 of his art history classes. He somehow worked all these weird facts into it, like where French fries got their name (they're "French cut") & the difference between a castle & a palace (castle's fortified). So I think it's not the subject but the teacher.
The best, most fun class you can take in university is Behavioral Science or Sexual Biology and I don't mean one that is strictly applied to humans, in all creatures, it is very interesting IMHO, even at the gametic level, evolutionary level and special level.
I could talk about every single detail about this shit till the cows come home, I fuckin' love it, watch videos and read journals all god damn day, its great stuff.
@MrHav1k It's a hobby really, I read up on this stuff cause its interesting to me, I haven't put many thoughts toward using it for a profession; the only ones that come to mind would be teaching or field work; studying creature and publishing my findings through peer review.
but you're right, money would have to be dropped a couple rungs on the ladder of importance and happiness if I were to do that.
But maybe it's just me. Pardon me, but I'm a numbers and evidence kind of guy. Rhetoric and anecdotes just don't do it for me. Pure models are as useless to me as President Obama has been. I'm always asking, "How does this fit into the real world?"
Isn't it really strange how the ONE social science that should be most using stuff like numbers, statistics, etc. DOESN'T really use much of it at all during even some of the more 'advanced' undergrad classes? Just words and rhetoric... Weird
Not to mention there ARE plenty of heterodox economists and schools of thought, not just the typical shit you learn in college. They say that the theoretical terms are "just to help students understand economics in a simple framework", and the models are "just abstract representations of reality", but really... At least try to incorporate SOME evidence into the model. REVISE the model, at least, as you learn new info. The same old supply and demand curves are probably very outdated.
Has anyone EVER proven half the ridiculous theoretical crap like Edgeworth box, Pareto efficiency, equilibrium, etc. or even come close?? Why continue teaching this unproven crap that just turns so many students like me who want EVIDENCE off?
I mean, what is "Pareto efficiency" but some nonsense invented by a second-rate douchebag 'economist' to simply justify more laissez-faire approaches. Economists put "efficiency" above all else to a staggering degree. It's ridiculous! I mean, what is "efficiency"? Doesn't "economic efficiency", to an extent, depend largely on your PERSONAL VALUES when it comes to economic shit? There's no one true way to define ' economic efficiency', really.
I actually complained to the head of the undergrad Econ dept. about the fact that just about all of the undergrad Econ classes (esp. when you consider the descriptions of course content) had a LOT of theory and models but little empirical evidence to back up much of what they claimed. It bugged the hell out of me... I guess I've "grown out of it" (that 'phase' or whatever you wanna call it), but I still am kind of peeved that guys like Ronald Coase and stuff like Pareto eff get so much acclaim.
Voting Behavior w/ David Petrocik was pretty cool. My Econ classes weren't bad, but almost all of the undergrad ones don't really introduce a lot of empirical evidence and mostly just talk about theory, models, and the like. But I did fairly enjoy Public Economics.
Physical anthropology was kind of boring, and the lab almost killed me. Worst lab ever... We had to look at the bones of ancient humans and memorize and get to know all the different parts, and there were so many subleties! It was insane.
Yay, let's blame our own lack of motivation on the one lecturing (read: it is not junior high anymore -- you study for yourself by yourself) on the lecturer. Wouldn't it be easier if people, you know, at least tried to find their own motivation to learn the concepts at hand and not blamed it all on the course staff?
There is little you can teach by lecturing, it is supposed to be just a preface for your own studies, nothing more. For more, there are the theory books.
Most boring class? Hmmm, I'd have to choose between History of Mexican-American Women or Linguistics: Language and the Brain.
The History of Mex-Am Women was just awful, mostly because of the boring professor. I'm Hispanic, and I hated this class.
Linguistics: Language and the Brain sounds cool and interesting, but 80% was about methodology/stats. It also doesn't help when the professor doesn't know how to speak clearly and says "uh" and "um" a lot. Ugh. Linguistics is my Minor.
Math is ALWAYS the most boring for me. There is nothing interesting about numbers. There is no human connection, just the movement of digits. I love History though, its like highlights of the drama that has unfolded throughout time. From wars and brutal murders to the rise and fall of empires, what not interesting about that? To each his own though.
@Gnarlsthe23rd I agree Math for me was boring, it has no story, nothing worth while, and yeah I love history as well, to me the best part of history is not the wars and the fall of Empires but the puzzle left behind by our ancestors, the story and how we can read the thoughts and lives of people who lived 3000 and 2000 yrs ago. I
basically any field that requires you to dogmatically memorize data instead of interpreting and defend your conclusions requires minimal intellectual engagement. see: religion.
@DeJach "Political Science" sounds like "Conspiracies for Dummies" to me. It could as well be called "Cold Fire" as politics is not a full-fledged science on its own (read: it prepares you to no specific occupation). One would be better of studying jurisprudence and social theories. That way you could at least qualify for the vacancies of the public sector.
In Finland, political science is taught as a sub-field of theoretical philosophy, which is one of the hardest fields to find work in.
@DeJach What's wrong about that? I hated the Economical Philosophy class but I really love my Economist career. It's not rocket science that some teachers are as interesting as a rock.
I think this video fails to emphasize how crucially important political theory classes, philosophy classes, ethics&moral classes, social theory, and history classes are. The importance and impact of a mater are way more primordial than its entertainment level.
I think that any lecture class with over 50 students is boring. Nothing kills a potentially interesting class more than being crammed like sardines into a lecture hall and being talked at for an hour.
@monalisasmilesforyou Ha, I remember doing the labs where we had to identify the different types of rocks. Those labs definitely took away any romantic notions I had about the field of geology.
I go to economics school and I unfortunately took arts class, mainly history of art and not only was it boring as hell, teacher was one of the worst uni ever had(no wonder they didn't employ her further) plus class turned out to be hard as hell... Dumb decision to get extra credits.
@Nejitheultimate Yes, as a poli sci major, I'm most interested in international relations. Next is comparative politics, then American politics...but I think political theory is boring.
That's why at my university, you declare a concentration, so you can focus on one field of political science.
In norway, or at least at NTNU we're not encouraged to take subjects that are not relevant to your major, and since my major was IT, i found 'IT, Culture and Society', or, pretty much any of the social science classes i took were the most boring. Luckily there weren't many.
(We also have to take one philosophy class and one irrelevant subject, but these are really easy and at times can be a little interesting)
ugh, I remember my Meteorology 2 class (I passed Meteorology 1) I could not stay awake for the life of me, I ended up getting a D in that class. It was so hard to pay attention in that class cause he was SO boring!
In my computer science and logic class all I do is sit there and listen to how funny my Chinese professor sounds and then I try to imitate her in the head to make time pass faster.
As an aspiring filmmaker, Ana, would it be possible for you to post a video that your friend from NY who is currently in film school, would deem appropriate for TYTU?
I had a Christian apologist professor teaching Late Roman Antiquity. Dear Yah-weh, it was a boring class! Most of the class was filled with College Republican students or Student's for Christ people, nodding their heads in total agreement that Constantine was "obviously" a die-hard Christian, who had little political motive to convert the Empire to this new fangle religion. I got a C in the class for writing a paper that countered that argument. Well, that killed my love of affair with history.
I'm surprised Ana was bored by her political theory class since she is after all, a person who has thought about political issues and all. But as she notes, it really depends on the professor. I usually found about topics I liked by reading books or wikipedia and went to class so I could get my degree. Yet, as a person who might one day be a professor of that subject (or foreign policy), I can understand where they're coming from. Its best to be as neutral as possible too when teaching it.
I'm currently taking a class called "Computer Use and Management". Topics in it include learning to send an e-mail. It's a graduation requirement and it's the most boring class in the world.
Although, to be perfectly honest, given some of the calls that go in to tech support, I gotta say. I really do think that class SHOULD be a graduation requirement...(that you test out of).
Case in point: my friend once got cussed out by a guy for half an hour, because his old Outlook account wasn't sending his e-mails. The reason? He never clicked "send and receive," because "I only want to SEND the damn thing; I don't need to get it back again!"
Never took a "Political Theory" course did take a sociology Theory course. We had to debate the utility of different schools of thought I think my group debated against Marxism

But the class biology class about the 5 kingdoms wasnt so bad but that lecture was a pain, fungus and bacteria was more fun to hear about then the protists, my bet is that most ppl dont even know what a protist is and it is a reason for that.

Best class: Native American Studies
Worst class: Design I
I am a graphic design major and I enjoy designing, but this professor was this old woman who acted like she was this god like designer and berated people openly in class in front of say 20 other students because the circle the used had a diameter of 4 inches and not 3.5 inches, just to state an example.

But maybe it's just me. Pardon me, but I'm a numbers and evidence kind of guy. Rhetoric and anecdotes just don't do it for me. Pure models are as useless to me as President Obama has been. I'm always asking, "How does this fit into the real world?"
whoo689 3 weeks ago
I've seen more reference to evidence and studies even in my political science classes.
whoo689 3 weeks ago
Isn't it really strange how the ONE social science that should be most using stuff like numbers, statistics, etc. DOESN'T really use much of it at all during even some of the more 'advanced' undergrad classes? Just words and rhetoric... Weird
whoo689 3 weeks ago
Do markets REALLY work that simply? I doubt it.
whoo689 3 weeks ago
Not to mention there ARE plenty of heterodox economists and schools of thought, not just the typical shit you learn in college. They say that the theoretical terms are "just to help students understand economics in a simple framework", and the models are "just abstract representations of reality", but really... At least try to incorporate SOME evidence into the model. REVISE the model, at least, as you learn new info. The same old supply and demand curves are probably very outdated.

Has anyone EVER proven half the ridiculous theoretical crap like Edgeworth box, Pareto efficiency, equilibrium, etc. or even come close?? Why continue teaching this unproven crap that just turns so many students like me who want EVIDENCE off?
whoo689 3 weeks ago
It's about trade-offs.
whoo689 3 weeks ago
I mean, what is "Pareto efficiency" but some nonsense invented by a second-rate douchebag 'economist' to simply justify more laissez-faire approaches. Economists put "efficiency" above all else to a staggering degree. It's ridiculous! I mean, what is "efficiency"? Doesn't "economic efficiency", to an extent, depend largely on your PERSONAL VALUES when it comes to economic shit? There's no one true way to define ' economic efficiency', really.
whoo689 3 weeks ago
I actually complained to the head of the undergrad Econ dept. about the fact that just about all of the undergrad Econ classes (esp. when you consider the descriptions of course content) had a LOT of theory and models but little empirical evidence to back up much of what they claimed. It bugged the hell out of me... I guess I've "grown out of it" (that 'phase' or whatever you wanna call it), but I still am kind of peeved that guys like Ronald Coase and stuff like Pareto eff get so much acclaim.
whoo689 3 weeks ago
Voting Behavior w/ David Petrocik was pretty cool. My Econ classes weren't bad, but almost all of the undergrad ones don't really introduce a lot of empirical evidence and mostly just talk about theory, models, and the like. But I did fairly enjoy Public Economics.
whoo689 3 weeks ago
But I'd have to say the most boring class I took, by far, was Statistics. Political Science Research Methods, by comparison, wasn't too bad.

People do that back here.

DeJach 3 weeks ago 40

Well, that killed my love of affair with history.
wtfsob123456 3 weeks ago
I'm surprised Ana was bored by her political theory class since she is after all, a person who has thought about political issues and all. But as she notes, it really depends on the professor. I usually found about topics I liked by reading books or wikipedia and went to class so I could get my degree. Yet, as a person who might one day be a professor of that subject (or foreign policy), I can understand where they're coming from. Its best to be as neutral as possible too when teaching it.

I'm currently taking a class called "Computer Use and Management". Topics in it include learning to send an e-mail. It's a graduation requirement and it's the most boring class in the world.

@AndrewMatt16 ...You win, man. You win.
