There's a difference between kindly telling people they're not star quality and completely humiliating them and shattering their dreams on TV. He doesn't even offer constructive criticism; he just constantly tells people, "well that was the worst thing I've ever heard." He only knows what it takes to become ONE kind of star, and that shows in the generic singers that come out of American Idol.
