Most of them were soldiers at Santa Fe, NM. The vast majority (over 80%) of the residents and land owners were anglos living in Texas and California. The balance of the population was almost entirely indigenous Indians. There wasn't even a significant Mexican population in Los Angeles, until around 1960. Buy a history book, already!
