You're probably confused because the ending (after Itami stabs Ding Hui while they 're dancing) is a flashback. I think the whole sex sequence at the end happens the day of the botched assassination when Ding Hui accidentally kills Szeto's lover Tang Yiling (I think the actress who plays her is even more beautiful than Zhang Ziyi). A great movie in the film noir vein, similar to Lust Caution but a lot better.
I have both and sincerily prefer Lust Caution. I also agree the end of this movie is way to fast and confusing after a good story build-up. Regards. And Zhang Ziyi is way better in Mo Li Hua Kai or in Wo de fu qin mu qin.

I have the dvd. The Movie is good, but the ending is confusing. Alot of good shootouts(1940's Gangster style).
