A singer cant be categorized as devotional! His/her rendering could. She's divine though...:-) And yea, she's known for her unparalleled, over three and a half octave range.
im sorry but she is pathetic nowadays! no body can match the voice of parveen sultana in her youth, but now shes close to unbearable! her voice and once-unparalelled range have deteriorated now. now the effort in hittin even an ati-taar Sa is quite evident! but its a matter of personal choice...u are most welcome to like whatever ou wish to...
I have researched her and I've read that she can sing in 3.5 octaves but not as much as 4 octaves but that was a very good observation you made, she has one of the best vocal ranges at least from the artists I am familiar with. I also recomend the music of Ustad Salamat ali khan he sings a different gharana of music known as the sham chaurasia gharana. He is also an excellent singer.
Lemme begin with basics. Hindustani Vocal Music has 5 octaves: Ati-mandra/ Anu-mandra/ Mandra-taar (lowest, 1st); Mandra (2nd); Madhya (middle, 3rd); Taar (upper, 4rth) and Ati-taar (highest, 5th).
Parween Sultana, from my observations, can sing in ALL 5 octaves! She has hit an ati-mandra Ni and an ati-taar Ma. That makes her range more than 3.5 octaves! In western notations, from C3 to F*6 (44 notes), 3 octaves and 8 notes (she sings from C*, and an octave has 12 notes)
You should also hear Pandit Ajay Chakraborty in concert. The intricate pattern of sargams he renders is awe-inspiring. If you can also get some old recordings of late Pandit Chinmay Lahiri (Begum Parveen Sultana learnt from him for 12 years), you will get to hear superb sargam taans.
Thank you for the translation "param sukh paya ..sukh dukh dono haath tihare ...nit nit yeh hi sacj" I started crying after learning meaning. The prayer is so true. Great rendition by one of the greatest for ALL times.
She is playing and singing to God, how can this be fuel to hell?
God is One, isn't Him? Why would He prefer one religion to another? What He is really concerned about is the real love for Him. Think about this and you will be able to understand other religions better. So I hope.
Here we enjoy the CLASSICAL MUSIC. Aur ye musiki khuda ke den hi. Usaki maherbani aur Begum Saheba ki lagan hai AUR hamari khuskismat hai ki unhe ham sun paye hai.
Superlative. Very moving. My ignorance of the culture does not prevent my enjoyment of this beautiful music. (I must learn more!) Thank you for posting.
I don't think you can find this recording on a CD since this was a live concert performance back in 1992. There are many CDs of Parween Sultana and they are all good but my favorite is Simply Divine CD. An amazing and jaw dropping performance in Raga Puriya Dunashree.
Give me some time and I will try to get this recording convert to mp3. Send me an reminder and give me your email and I will send it to you. Thanks
what i get so far..in the words...apart from the taan etc....is "param sukh paya ..sukh dukh dono haath tihare ...nit nit yeh hi sach which means i got extreme happiness....happiness and sorrow are in your hands ...day by day, it is the reality..."...she is basically praying to god.
Man, imagine if she was your mom and she was scolding you -- there would be no argument; the good part is it would be over very quickly -- hahahaha.
Awesome Singer!
Would she be considered devotional or entertaining -- what is she known for?

Also, nobody in the history of HCM was known to have that kind of range! Atleast in my knowledge...;-)
