  • wow that's very fast....

  • can you run microsoft office on umbuntu/kumbuntu

how is it different as an os?

  • I wouldn't run ms office on ubuntu, but you probably can with wine (some kind of emulator),

I would use OpenOffice, a free alternative.

If you want to find out how it's different, try it! download and burn a live cd and you can try (k)ubuntu without making any chances to your computer.

  • i am confused as to what the difference is between ubuntu, kubuntu, and xubuntu. can anyone explain?

  • xubuntu is just basically ubuntu but a lighter version. its good for old computers. kubuntu uses the KDE desktop so it looks a little different than ubuntu and xubuntu. hope that helps. :)

  • Ubuntu uses the GNOME desktop

kubuntu uses KDE (more similar to windows)

Xubuntu is lightweight for old computers

fedora for example is a linux distro who uses either gnome or kde :)

just google ubuntu kubuntu comparison it's neerly the same just looks diffrent but everything will work on both OS

  • yarrak gibi olmuşş

  • maybe your computer is a piece of shit

  • when you turn your computer on can select xp or Kubuntu?

  • @raze053: If you have win xp and install also Kubuntu(properly), then yes, you can choose which one of these you want to run after you turn your computer on(it's called a dualboot). You just have to be careful not to accidentaly format the drive containing win xp during kubuntu instalation.

  • Thanks, GraNo :)

  • @raze053:

No problem:) Just find some good step-by-step installation guide to kubuntu and be careful during the 'Prepare disk space' step (you have to select 'manual' there) and everything should be okay:)

  • what mp3 player is using?

  • Amarok, but his looks customized.

  • everyone's so obsessed with the cube but it's really not that useful...

  • neither is most of the other eye candy. it's not really for practicality.

  • the cube is pretty cool and it works whit no glitches, theres no windows program that does it in the same way,and as fast

  • @damaband41 it switches between desktops, why not have a nice cube do it other that a fast switch so you woildent notice what desk you are on, havin it simulate geomitry can make it easier to remember, but idk :P

  • not bad

  • compiz fusion and beryl are so useless

    ie theres really no point

  • just like vista then

  • u prolly dont kno how to use it

  • Yea ofc you hate it , youve probably destroyed it too fcking noob ! how many times have you tried to acually use an product as its supposed ? cus that would really help !

  • rofl <3 Kubuntu

  • Ive nvr used it, and I bet its not that hard to like it...(installing now...)

  • where can an average joe who has only known windows for his whole life go to learn about using ubuntu? I installed it once, and the interface was too overwhelming, with all sorts of command lines i didn't understand any of...

  • ubuntu dot com

  • what are the minimum pc requirements to run linux like that ?

  • the minimum are:

    128MB RAM

    32 MB VGA

    +5 GB HDD

    Pentium II-III (AMD K6-K7)

    A mouse

  • as i remember ubu 6.1 required 256 mb ram (to run off of live cd)

  • I was talking about the OS once installed... But yes, to run the live CD it is required 256

  • my friend has a 10 year old IBM laptop, it's pretty rubbish for current times, and he can run kubuntu, with compiz just fine :)

  • I dont like windows because windows is restricted and i dont like windows vista because they are too annnoying about security you cant open something like cmd "command prompt with out it asking for permision and on this computer we dont even have the telnet client? how shit is that?

  • By what I know, is that you can disable those.

  • nice

  • Good but bit laggy

  • Now why would anyone want their Kubuntu to look like Vista?Vista sucks!!

  • not really.. its isn't all that bad. all depends on ur experience.

  • yes. VISTA SUCKS

  • To be honest I thought it sucked with my old computer, but I just got a new one and it works great. It sucks on old hardware, shines on new.

  • Hmm, i don't even know why i look in this Video. Im running Kubuntu since my XP broke down and the CD is not bootable, i had a Vista imitation with Aero and all...

And i dont even know how to make FireFox wrk on Kubuntu, therefore i cant see the Video...

Hmm, cant even play Mp3's :(

    Gotta fix it... >:(

  • look for adept-manager or something in your k-menu. Search for Firefox, and double-klick it and save changes or whatever it's called in the english version. I had the same problem as you, but got help from a friend. Now I boot kubuntu but uses ubuntu. I don't really understand any about that, but I learn everyday.

  • Kmenu > Add/Remove Programs > Enter your password > In the Adept Installer search box type "firefox" > Firefox and other stuff will appear in the applications list > click the checkbox next to Firefox > now click "Apply Changes" > When it has finished installing you can quit the Adept Installer. Now Firefox is installed.

  • Obviously you want flash installed also, so go to the Adobe Flash download page. It will automatically take you to the Linux download page. You will see three options, you will want Option 1: .tar.gz... Scroll down a bit and simply follow the .tar.gz installation instructions. If you need more help open up Konversation (Kmenu > Internet > Konversation). Konversation will automatically put you in the #kubuntu IRC channel, you can ask for more help there.

  • For mp3's and other non-free formats Kmenu > System > Adept Manager > In the search box type "kubuntu-restricted-extras" > it will appear in the package menu beneath > click the arrow next to it to open it up > click on "request install" then click "apply changes" in the main menu up top. Now it will install mp3 support, other multimedia stuff and err flash... so forget my previous post about flash :P

  • I always forget that kubuntu-restricted-extras includes flash :P

  • vista now is like xp when it first came out.. give it some time to update it.Ubuntu stills updates dont it? its not ''perfect'' when it came out and same goes for vista. But vista is expensive so people go for ubuntu

  • Awesome! I don't think my video card is anywhere near good enough for that kinda stuff though.

  • agreed

  • why would you want linux to look like vista? it defeats the whole purpose

  • The purpose of Linux does not have anything to do with its looks, if people enjoy Linux but also enjoy the theme and desktop organisation of Windows, then so be it, it's a matter of tastes really.

  • I thought, why pay extra to have something for free, but then I have used dual boot systems for a while; Some programs I really like I can only use on windozzze, so I guess why not?

I Love Linux distro's, but have photo and video editing programs Wine doesn't know what to do with as a windows emulator.

MNS caught on to the fact many people prefer Linux, and made an some interesting ways to capitalize on it. IMO.

  • well bcause ubuntu or KUBUNTU are strong OS's and dont need allot of power or ram or watever to run on they can run Amsn really fast and doesnt even lag :D

  • Indeed, perhaps you missed the point.

MSN knows its a better product, so Unix/linux resources are available in Vista Ultimate.

(hence one might pay for access to something free, but if its on the fly, I haven't gotten past the bugs in the upgrade to find out.

The Vista upgrade has been a nightmare. A cluster f*** of nonsense.

    I Love Kubuntu.

  • Linux is more efficient by default because windows has the whole "Services" thing.

  • That's right, Linux doesn't have any background services at all. Databases and storage systems on Linux operate by a series of 3M post-it notes distributed by a 'gnome' (or sometimes by a 'KDE', which is a 'sim' from Germany).

  • Exeliting...

  • This has to be the worst beryl theme i have ever seen... Not to mention the crap graphics card your probly using...

  • this video is most likely showing that linux may be different, but can still be used comfortably by windows addicts.

  • I'm a Windows addict, and I love my Ubuntu. I used Mac OS for a time... but I gave up on it ;/

  • I use Vista, and VPC to run Ubuntu and hacked a Virtual HDD to run OS X Leopard. Best of all the worlds :P

  • no one wants linux to look like windows if it dont work like windows, or use programs that windows uses... if u can get windows programs to work on linux then u want it to look like windows...

  • a) you didn't succeed in making it look like vista... you just used the window decorator theme that comes with beryl

    b) why would you want linux to look like windows anyway?

    c) go to hell

  • pure shit

  • Fuck off!

  • I served as a beta tester for vista beta 2. I must say, the install took forever, the performance was shitty, and the GUI was't that great. After the mainstream sheltered people finally realize that an OS shouldn't break your bank for performance. Dan-Official Vista Beta 2 Tester.

  • How can anyone say 'vista is better' - vista has that nightmare DRM lockdown issue! Just you wait. You'll all wish you made the switch to linux real soon. The more people make that switch, the more likely we'll see software companies forced to support it! Go on - download ubuntu - ditch vista!!

  • which packet do you need for these effects? Is it compiz?

  • sikim bole seyı ne yıme yara kı bu bende vıstayı kurdum ama bu dandık bısey abı ya ne bu bole

  • Nuh cussing me out in another language! >: O

  • whats with the shitty horizontal lines

  • vista is not bad.. in time you will see that too

  • You "locks" like a moron!

  • meh...Vista still sucks too slow and it runs with bloatware

  • windows vistas

    not that bad?

  • ugh... i hate vista.

How could you do this to KDE :(

  • Uh oh... I see artifacts...

  • Nice the cablabitlys andvisuals of vista with out the virus's and highprice !!!! nice video

  • lol this far surpasses vistas visuals..

and.... viruses don't fucking work in vista unless you modify system file privliges and modify uac to silently allow everything... if you do that. then you should kill youself.

  • So what you're saying is Vista user should have to give permission 15 times to open a file they know is clean, or move a file from one directory or another? Thats ridiculous. MS should have spent more time developing UAC before releasing Vista. But if you like it, whatever. I'll stick with Ubuntu mainly bc I enjoy a system that lets me do redundant things without ask me f I'm sure I want to.

  • no.

what im saying is people who turn UAC off with TweakUAC(instead of the normal way) are morons. also.. UAC has a AI that notices if you click yes for a certain operation everytime it'll stop prompting you for it. Microsoft should have just made it so you can choose the settings without having to do the same operation 10 times.

  • you do realize vista also monitors all your passwords and logs some other things like program s. (we all "love" trusted computing dont we)

  • Does it? Damn shit! If that IS so, then it's a crap security model as one of the big NO NO's of secure computing is treating the computer as a trusted app. Are you completely sure about what you said...?

  • It asks you what passwords to save, idiot. And you can turn it off completely if you want. I tell it to remember my MySpace account and Hotmail stuff (things that it dosent matter if they get hacked, so i take the SLIM chance), and banking and stuff I tell it not to.

  • What theme is that?

  • icevm all the way or maybe fluxbox

  • Fantastic this video...you come to see one of my video

  • Errr, correction, I went back to GNOME. KDE is for ppl who wants some approach to XP.

  • xp copied kde

  • mircosoft copied everthing including the gamecube controller for the xbox and that is just sad

  • I agree with that. I just installed KDE and went straight back to Gnome.

  • KDE is better if you run it in Kubuntu. You can apt-get it and just log in with Kubuntu. It barely takes any time, it's shiny, and it comes with the Kubuntu apps. Also, I don't know why, but right after I switched to Kubuntu from Ubuntu I didn't have that problem reading my windows hard drive. I think it had a good NTFS reader built in or something.

  • u switched from ubuntu to kubuntu WHY DIDENT U JUST DUAL BOOT

  • I dual boot Vista-Ubuntu/Kubuntu and I can log on to Ubuntu still with the same username. I should have clarified. I think the command was "sudo apt-get kubuntu-desktop". So you're really using two desktop environments. But it's still not just KDE.

  • Hmm i see atm im trpile booting win xp and ubuntu and kubuntu XD

  • i'm just XP and Kubuntu, i don't like ubuntu cos it uses gnome >:( KDE is beautiful :)

  • Right on man. As long if you download some programs that you undoubtedly need.

  • i only use ubuntu ATM Cus i lost my Kubuntu Disc (Have they updated to 8.4 Ubuntu/Kubuntu yet)

  • 22 lefts

  • No dont think so, next in i 2010 for Kubuntu to my knowledge.

  • i have a decent kubuntu kde demo up. this one is old you must remember. it was added in 2006 :/ he was doing great for the time of the vid!

  • R Parallels or WMware working with Linux so I can use msn in Linux or other Windows stuff = D

  • Where I could download this theme for KDE?

  • GASPS! eww get Ubuntu

  • KDE, blech. GNOME FTW.

  • To racsito39, This is the reason why you shouldn't use ATI radeon video card ever. They suck at linux. They don't care anything about linux. And their driver sucks at linux so that's why i advise you to use nvidia which is also proprietaryy but better support.

  • Everyone knows Nvidia has more compability with Linux than ATI!!!!

  • Never ever buy ati- I learned that the hard way, get an nvidia or something with linux support

  • I installed Ubuntu 7.04 and found it difficult to use, critical issues I got was the resolution, I couldn't get my Radeon 9550 to display at 1280x1024 and guides on Internet just tell you to put codes on terminal which is not user friendly. Currently I'm downloading same version but Kubuntu hoping that KDE (not GNOME) would solve mi issue :S

  • ati sucks man, i bought one card from them, it never worked right. And they suck even more cause they don't support linux. Go nvidia :)

  • I couldn't solve the issue with Kubuntu, they are practically the same thing, lol. So I jumped back on Ubuntu and finally could get things fixed, I had to edit the Xorg.conf. I read that Ubuntu 7.10 will include a more automatic Xorg, that's some great news!

  • dont use ati they have major grpahical interface problems, hey just a question I have a pro-savage graphis card and Ubantu on an hp a210e desktop with an AMD processor, will Beryl work?

  • yes i have ati , amd and it works VERY good...and beryl is working since april and i never had any problem

  • Beryl ile ilgili ayrıntılı bilgi için e-bergi[NOKTA]com'un Mayıs sayısına bakabilirsiniz...

  • Big deal it's so cool - Linux window managers suck!

Such cool effects cannot make up for that!

  • R U mad or do u work for microshaft. i have had countless problems with microshaft the effects of vista heavily use my vista capable hardware to crashing point but i can do 10 things at once in linux and the effects are pretty impressive.

  • but this is not GNU/Linux its FreeBSD

  • well the title says it's kubuntu which makes it linux. the freebsd demon could simply be part of the theme. and yeah, it totally ownz

  • It says Kubuntu.

  • Big deal it's free!

The best software in the world isn't free!

O'Reilly have a slogan "Software is like sex - it's better when it is free". Same holds for the books, assholes!

  • Linux ( which is free ) OWNZ windows. :P

  • Yeah, right...

  • it does...

  • O'Reilly? thats a quote from linus torvalds stupid.

  • Nice one! curious, what your hardware specs?

  • extremadamente muchisimo mejor que Windows, y con menos recursos del equipo

  • it is downloadable and it is free and almost all the software for it is too...like gnome (ubuntu) best

are you using compiz or beryl?

  • it's kubuntu linux with XGL installed, i believe. Havent tried it (yet) due to hardware problems though...

  • Can I download this system? Is it free?

  • yes it is freee, it's linux

  • yes but its hard to install.its best to get it pre-loaded.

  • Not anymore. My MOTHER could install Kubuntu now.

  • it's not hard to install!

  • i know :O i was soooo shocked when i did it :D

  • linux is free to download and to keep forever, /share/modify (its in java and c++ that you can accually read)

  • hey dude, great demo, just wondering where you got the skydome image from?? or how to get it to animate, thats the only thing i cant get working! thnx

  • yeh that is pretty cool :)

  • NICE man really nice, is that downloadable???

  • dipshit

  • whats your problem??

  • SWEET
