there is a reason why is it happen.. wilson goes back in the island so that when chuck survived and will face media for interviews so that they will not think that he lost his mind in the island because they will not understand the role of wilson in chuk`s life when he is in the island.

It wasn't just a "ball" it was his best friend. He was all alone, with no one to talk to except for Wilson. He made a imaginative friendship with him, and to lose him is like losing an actual person. That's why it's sad because now he lost his companion.
