I believe that the position - minister mentor, is a actually quite useless. Why should we pay LKY to give his thoughts in parliament? Why should we be giving 100k every month to all MPs? Why are we wasting 1.2million taxpayer dollars to "ensure' that corruption will not happen ( it still does)? We are sending the wrong message to singaporean kids that if they want a high-paying, iron rice bowl, they should become a mp!
There are two ways to look at the "High salary = Low corruption" argument.
1.Ministers need an extremely high salary with annual increments every year to discourage corruption. This is the angle the PAP uses.
2.We have a bunch of criminals in office that need an extremely high salary with annual increments every year or they will resort to corruption. AKA Blackmail.
We have long since progressed to the point where the people are scared of the state instead of vice-versa.
Imagine if you were to walk into your boss's office now and tell him that you need annual increment every year or you may resort to corruption, sell company secrets, etc. What do you think will happen?
Let's not forget the Praetorian Guard in roman times...they demanded a salary increase everytime a new emperor was appointed. Emperors whom refused were killed. The parallels should be obvious. We have now reached the point where the people are held at mercy by the ruling party.
Like what Sylvia said "You must lead not just with the head but with heart." As a minister who cares for the people, would you be happy to take so much money from your people as your pay? Or should you be channelling the money to better use for the people instead?
If u truly are passionate about serving the people and the nation, would you really be concerned about how high your pay is? Not as if the minister is drawing a low pay in the 1st place, earning $100K a month or prob $200K a month is ridiculous and it will NO DOUBT create the greed factor, just a matter of time and it will easily blur their main objective and goal as a minister - to serve the nation in their best interests.
R u saying that only high salary will prevent corruption? How much is enough to prevent corruption? R u saying that all the ministers will become imperfect once their salaries r lowered? R such ministers acceptable? Why can't we have oppositions to 'check' on ministers with lower (than the current ones) salaries?

Come cooling day.Forget abt ST, TNP and CNA... Listen to your heart and the outcries of your fellow singaporeans, salute the brave souls like Chiam See Tong, Low Thia Khiang, Chen Show Mao,Sylvia Lim,Benjamin Phwee,Tan Jee Say,Ang Yong Guan and not forgetting Nicole Seah. They left their comfort zone and fight the battle for Singaporean. 7 days of campaign, they won for us 2 apologies.Think of what they can do for us in 5 years...
Good speech overall. However, it's hard to imagine how corrupted people can be come. Her speech is good in an ideal situation when politicians are perfect people who wont be corrupted. this rarely happens in real life. Lower the wage = corruption arises, this is true for every single government out there.
@argentpleuvoir Rubbish! High or Low pay corruption still arises, There is no limit to greed. Its not like when you have high pay, you wont think of getting more money in your pockets. I believe that, the more pay you get, the more like-hood of corruptions. High Pay = More Power. How the minister choose to use its powers we dont know, but the point is "Is the minister Using That "Power" To help its People?"
@chriz88 Most of the current ones getting paid top dollars, are not the ones who contributed to the 41 yrs of nation building, yet besides the high salaries, they are also entitled to the ridiculous high ministerial pension scheme.

@Rocketmail6691 if high salary will prevent corruption , then seems like singapore have totally no trust in their own ministers.
