  • You were great in The Social Network

  • Cmon folks, if you can play enough to read tab or chord diagrams can't you just look at the guitar and listen? You know, use the organ that music is enjoyed by anyway. Ears!

  • @bergali Ears aren't an organ...... But I get your point ;D

  • This really makes me not want to drink even more...

  • @MrSuednym Strange. Does the opposite for me!

  • What is the chord progression you use during the verses?

  • Wishing I could buy a copy of this song of this, be it itunes or elsewhere!

  • If you don't jump up and down and whoop with joy at this song, then you failed GCSE Biology

    GIVE ME A BEER!

  • Bow ties are cool.

  • I love your music cadamole!!!! I have all the words memorized!!!

  • Salutations from Quebec Students in Biology bro !

  • I'm probably the only one who knows what long-term potentiation is, lol. Just so you all know it's the increase of speed of communication between neurons through simotaneous activation ;)

  • cadamole....i show your videos in my biology lab...my students love it

  • I agree with everyone who says we'd love it if you would post more. Your stuff is fantastic! I hope you teach in real life as well.

  • CAN YOU POST THE CHORDS AND STRUM PATTERN PLEEEEEEEEEEAZ????

  • Comment removed

  • @schaibleja The chords used are A G D Bm, the sequence and strum aren't hard.

  • If you're concerned about the metabolic accuracy, maybe you could change "respiration" to "adaptation."

  • Oh my goodness! So wonderfully nerdy! You are wonderful cadamole!

  • Oh my goodness! So wonderfully nerdy! You are wonderful cadamole!

  • Beer is the life blood of IAESTE and we are geeks in the extreme. I've linked the song to some friends - it will spread like wildfire. ;-)

    Cheers!

  • lies

  • this is amazing! you sir, are a very talented "scientific musician" lol i agree with previous posts please make more songs! also, id like to suggest more traditional irish instruments for this one,... it sounds like there's some kind of flute? playing, which is good, but id love to hear some combo of fiddle, spoons, and maybe a banjo, similar to the idea in the blue grass cold play cover... but anyway man this is great!

  • Thumbs up if you are a biologist with Irish blood

  • great job!

  • You've got a fan from Moscow! As an engineer in the field of biotechnology i feel great respect. Thank you very much.

  • Again. My friend WILL marry you.

  • One word. Genius!!!!

  • awesome!!!! You're the guy!!!

  • Fantastic!

  • Tom Lehrer has been eclipsed.

  • This is brilliant, i love your work :)

  • Hey, I must say: amazing!

I have many great times of biologist fun with the two songs.

U`r becoming famous among biology students in Brazil.

    ^_^

    Thanks for the inspiration!!

    Looooove it!!

    Melissa, Campinas, Brasil

  • This song is bloody brilliant.

  • Amazing!

  • What is that chord you play that looks like a G bar. When I copy your fingering exactly my chord does not seem to sound the same. Also props on an excellent video.

    Sláinte

  • @Crasshole88 Isn't it a Bm?

  • Better had he sung this BEFORE consuming a large quantity of the beer he is supposedly lauding! Totally incomprehensible........or Irish perhaps.

  • This is brilliant! Definitely adding this to the playlist for next years' St. Pat's

  • Dude could you post chords for this?

  • My AP Bio teacher showed us your Mother's day song, and we were cracking up! But when we convinced her to click this one, she got to the second line and went "Sorry, I can't show you this, look it up online!!" SO GLAD SHE SHOWED US YOU!!

  • A shout out for whoever's on the penny whistle! The cherry on the cake.

  • Any chance of this coming to itunes?

  • Marry me?

  • Can I get this on mp3?? :)

  • Such a catchy song! I've been singing it all week long. Thanks man

  • I guess 3 people are teetotallers?

This is very funny! I'm really pleased I stumbled across your songs! :)

  • Studied this instead of Princeton Review for AP Bio. Way more useful anyway.

  • Please please put for purchase on iTunes!

  • Bowties are cool!

  • You, sir, are fabulously brilliant! So clever!

  • I love that you`re smiling the entire time! Great job!

  • .......NUFF SAID!!!

  • I was wondering if you could either post or something to the tabs for this? This is probably one of my favorite youtube vids, so it'd be awesome if I could catch those from you.

  • Hilarious! I don't drink beer, but this is still hilarious! I love the Irish! And Scottish.

  • Just saw this in Microbiology today via Dr. Bruslind! Nicely done!

  • Why didn't I discover this 6 weeks ago? I could shown it to my Honors Science class.

    Next year!

  • I must learn this song.

  • Great song with lovely chorus harmonies, but along with the shamrocks and oh so witty celebration, DON'T forget the DESIGNATED DRIVER (or just don't drive), should you be imbibing a bit. Along with the very informative biology, there is the old F=MA and 1/2 mv^2 that should NOT be forgotten. Not meanin' to preach, but I've seen the results of ignoring Mr. Newton's physics.

  • @lexinaut amen!

  • I don't even drink an this is brilliant

  • As an Irish biology student may I just say: BRAVO!

  • Please please please keep going all my Biology kids absolutely love these!

  • Bio nerd + guitar + catchy nerdy song= my eternal fucking love.

  • MARRY ME NOW.

  • Those songs are just "aquaporin" out of ya! Your muse clearly isn't inhibited, even if your vasopressin is!

  • Today my bio prof asked us what saccharomyces cerevisiae was. Needless to say, I knew the answer. =D

  • HAHAHAHA There are people who disliked the song. HAHAHAHAHA

  • If you turn out to be as a good a biologist as you are a song writer and musician, then you'll go far laddie! Great stuff... keep up the good work!

  • Love the jewfro :D

  • You are a genius! We from the Biology Olympiad liked it very! Thank you!

  • love this song

  • LOOOOVE IT:DDDDDD

  • The epic geekiness of this has just earned you a subscriber ;)

  • any chance we can get the tabs or chord sheet to the song?

  • @JAM325meredithja Just watch his fingers and listen for the beat... its pretty simple.

  • Full of Win! Thank You!

  • Boston bio majors love ya kiddo. WICKED AWESOME, come up with some more pleasey!! your beer looks like shit though how many takes had it gone through by then?

  • @lborden21 too many

  • Good fun and great song! What is the melody you're covering?

  • @inicholson456 I wrote this melody after listening to a whole lot of Irish music.

  • this makes me so proud to be a bio major

  • The tree for the third 'urination' was inspired.

  • If glucose is lost in the urine, doesnt that make you a diabetic ?

  • @ForestBreeze Glucose is lost in urine when you are diabetic, since insulin is not being produced, this glucose is not being stored and is expelled in urine as waste.

Here, the glucose is lost not due to the lack of insulin, so in this case, you are not diabetic.

  • @1234yersiman Thanks. You are bloody fantastic. I want to download this to my Ipod

  • My next toast shall be to you good sir!

    *raises glass* CHEERS!

  • Science ftw

  • Truly truly fucking awesome. This should be the United Nations Global Anthem.

Truly brilliant song. (though I've gotta say your pint looks a bit moody.)

  • Slainte

  • that is why I don't drink

  • T -T Does He Drink The Beer In The End?!

  • This is just WAY too epic.

  • Holy freaking crap this is awesome! Subbed, seriously awesome.

  • This is now my drinking song.

  • I can't hear his words too clearly, but he more than makes up for it with having awesome lyrics. Definintely a must-learn for any Science student who wants to be cool.

  • So, a suggestion: at the "trouble spot" of the song, you could change the lyrics from "anaerobic respiration, also known as fermentation" into "Alcoholic fermention, no oxidative phosphorylation" Awesome song, thank you for sharing, you guys rock

  • Science!

  • You're written a song about mothers and a song about beer. You've covered everything a man needs.

  • NERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRDS

  • @Illuyankas (er, not that there's anything wrong with that)

    (nerds)

  • @Illuyankas eh

  • Who cares if there were a few errors. Its still awesome

  • Ok.. I died laughing! And I need to tell you thanks for brightening up my days that I just handed in my dissertation working with S.cerevisiae. I'll post this in my friends fb too.The best song for completing this journey of undergrad studies.Let's get drunk people!:P

  • 2 people were too drunk to press the Thumbs up button.

  • SPETTACOLO !!! XD

  • you are a hero and a role model to all of us undergrad biologists

  • WHY IS THIS NOT VIRAL.

  • loved it :) :)

  • So awesome!!! GIVE ME A BEER!!!

  • urination, urination, urination..

  • this is EXCELLENT!!

our bio teacher showed us this.. looooove it!

  • You need to make a video where you go into a pub, teach everybody the lyrics to the song, and then have a good ol' time!

Believe me, they might not understand the chemistry in the lyrics, but they'll love it anyways.

  • Super!!!!! :D :D

  • adam sandler meets tommy makem

  • Also, nice bow-tie. Bow-ties are cool.

  • I <3 this song so much

One thing though, fermentation does not have to occur in an anaerobic environment in fact, yeast prefers fermentation even in the presence of oxygen (as long as there are sugars available, such as is found in beer).

The main characteristic of fermentation is that the electrons from the coenzymes are transferred back to an endogenous substrate such as pyruvate while in anaerobic respiration the final destination of those electrons are an exogenous substrate like a nitrate.

  • @Saturos01 Yep, I was wrong, anaerobic respiration and fermentation are different - (see my correction notes in the info bar) - but I guess I was too busy stretching for a rhyme to remember that. Or I was drunk or something. But, even when O2 is present, I think fermentation is still considered an anaerobic process.

  • @cadamole

Oh ha, chalk one up to poor reading skills. Yep your correction is right. :p

But yeah, fermentation does not use oxygen and is an anaerobic process, but I found it noteworthy that even under aerobic condition yeast will still use fermentation over aerobic respiration. Yay yeast for making beer delicious!

  • @cadamole You're technically incorrect but I will let it slide... this once... for having such an awesome song ;-) (I kid, of course!)

  • @cadamole Love this and it looks like someone already told you, but anaerobic respiration and fermentation are not the same thing. Even though fermentation is anaerobic. I teach microbiology and this is a BIG misconception that I have to address all the time. So, although I want to share your video with my students, I can't unless you fix it!!

  • @cadamole Perhaps the lyrics could be set as "anaerobic respiration _in the mode of_ fermentation", and the rhyme and meter would still work out.

  • Comment removed

  • @Saturos01 Actually, fermentation can only occur in the absence of oxygen because if oxygen is present, the organism will preferentially dump electrons onto the oxygen reducing it to water to gain the maximum amount of energy. No ethanol will be produced because the pyruvate generated through glycolysis will be further oxidized by the TCA cycle. Fermentation only yields a net of ~2 ATP while aerobic respiration yields ~336 - 38 ATP.

  • @stargazerngc

From what I understand, fermentation can occur in the presence of oxygen even though a more efficient pathway is available because with the production of ethanol, the yeast is effectively killing off all of its competitors. So in essence it is advantageous to the survival of the yeast to produce energy through fermentation to ensure a source of nutrients and kill off competition.

I love seeing the nerd talk sparked by a nerdy video. :D

  • @Saturos01 I love nerdy talked sparked by a nerdy video about BEER! It combines two of my favorite things: science and drinking ;-)

  • This is brilliant

  • Everything is so much perfect with biology and alcohol! A toast to Saccharomyces cerevisiae! ;)

  • This BETTER be on iTunes - it's now my new favorite drinking song....

  • This should be made for download... and tabs/lyrics for those who want to learn it :P

  • You know whats great, I'm not really really sober and I have just found this xD, makes it so much better. Yay for alcohol :P

  • i love it!! you're awesome!! i know a lot of fellow scientists that would love this!

  • I love how everyone is quick to point out "technicalities". I didn't see any of you come up with this song. Ah intellectual minds, they are like actors. One to do it and the rest to say "I could do better!" Shut it, you jealous bitter bastards!!!

  • To the one person who disliked this video... Are you insane!?! This is without a doubt THE best video I have seen in ages! The geek in me was very proud that a fellow Biologist made such a genius video :)

  • @hcwells1988 It had to have been a miss-click. thats the only rational explanation.

  • @CarbonSuit Haha it has to be :) Couldn't agree more!! lol

  • just loooove it! :))))

  • this should have millions of views by now, what is wrong with people. i cant stop playing it over and over.

  • @CarbonSuit I guess it's a problem to find a million of people knowing what the hell is this all about :)

  • This is better than 99% of the crap that comes out today. Thank you for renewing my faith in music hahaha.

  • Please put this on iTunes!!!!

  • This is seriously under-viewed

  • awesome.

  • this is the best thing in the world right now while working on my biochem presention with a killer hangover

  • My favorite part is it looks like he has had a few already when he recorded this. It's the way this song should be sung.

  • Fucking awesome! As well as funny and informative... now I know to hydrate and drink Powerade or Gatorade before I get smashed!

  • Awesome... Just awesome.

  • God, this is the awesomest nerdy joke I have heard in years! Hahahah. Complete and Total <3

  • Well played, sir, well played.
