I guess technically, these aren't all that different from the closed cockpit prototypes you see from Peugeot, Aston Martin, and Mazda these days, but it's just not the same as these GT1 monsters. I don't think anybody would be disappointed if this class made a comeback.
Thanks for posting this, 97 was a truly remarkable year for GT racing, perhaps its zenith. Some of the cynical programs (like the Porsche and Mercedes cars) were kinda against the spirit of the competiton, and put off true road cars, like the F50, from entering. But this was still the year with the most awsome cars on the track at one time. *Would really love to see more of the races appear, especialy Laguna Seca ;)
The CLR lifted off the track in 1999. The CLK-LM was doing pretty well at Le Mans till they had to retire. Their M119 V8s were not as reliable as Mercedes had hoped. The CLK-LM would then dominate the 1998 FIA-GT championship winning all 10 races in the calender.
Thanks again for putting these '97 vids up. This was the season where supposed 'GT' cars stared becoming full-on prototypes and first led me to love sportscar racing.
these were great GT1 cars. make the rules similar and the 1st GT1 car to be approved is the 918 RSR. then go from there.....

The CLK-LM went up in the air twice during the 24 Hours of LeMans. One on the warmup and one during the race.
