  • Hey Craig, I just bought a omni 105 kero-sun heater at an auction. I know nothing about these but when I lit it, it had a small flame and then went out. Tried to light again but won't light. It had half a tank when I bought it. I'm guessing the wick is bad but don't know if the walmart wicks will work. Do you know if they will?

  • I live in Alabama, on the Gulf of Mexico. If temperatures dip far below freezing, there will be a couple deaths, the elderly, even then. I had wondered what people do in the Northern states after a Winter Blizzard knocks out power for days at a time. Not everyone has a fireplace or wood burning stove. It is scary to think that you and your family could freeze to death during those times. This kerosene heater is a very good option. -Liked-

  • Very good and thorough video. Good Job!

  • dosent that produce carbon monoxide

  • @PrepperAZ With regular use and doing your regular dry burns, a wick should last you at least an entire season or two if it's a good quality wick. You can see if the wick is in good repair by doing a dry burn. If it's soft supple, not thin or hard or straggly, you know your all good. Also you can tell if the wick is good if it's lighting up quickly, easy to light, doesn't produce ordors when burning full, etc.

  • I just bought one at an auction last night. It is a Vintage Turco heater. It looks a little different from yours. As soon as I check it out to make sure everything works it will be stored away until I ever need it.

  • For power failure, my emergency solution is going to be a 60kw Generac Power Systems back up generator. :)

  • Very very good review,I see these heaters at the store all the time and have wondered how good they are,,I'm switching my home over from oil furnace to base board electric,so heating is on my mind, how safe is this thing inside a home ,for example on the kitchen floor ? ... Iim sure it's a constant thing to keep an eye on and shouldn't even go outside with it on to shovel snow. Again, great review.

  • NICE VIDEO I JUST GOT ONE HAVEN'T USED IT YET, I HAVE A BULLET HEATER AND YES I WOULD AGREE THE KEROSENE DON'T GO BAD ITS BEEN IN MINE FOR A FEW YEARS NEVER USED IT AND I FIRED IT UP RECENTLY NO BOTHER AT ALL. HOW LONG WOULD U SAY THIS WILL STAY HEATED FOR SUCH A SMALL AMOUNT OF FUEL IT HOLDS

  • @raptorlishus It says mine will stay lit for around 10 hours.

  • CRack opened the window for ventilation.

  • Thanks for the info. You look young to me but with white hair. I wasn't thinking about what you look like until someone mentioned it on your upload comments.

I have a kerocene heater and I didn't use it yet. I have a Carbon Monoxide detector but I am still feeling insecure about the emissions. I know it will be good in case of an emergency. Thanks again for a good video.

  • The heat that close to your drum set is bad for the drum skins

  • The dish as you call it is a flame defuseser

  • ((% of all wicks are made of fiberglass

  • @surrynet 99% of wicks are made of fiberglass

  • @surrynet 99%?

     lol

  • @halfasser There is only about 1% of heater wicks that is made from cotton. The most widely used wick is made from fiberglass. The cotton wicks are just about gone, the fiberglass wicks have a much longer life.

  • for those bothered by smell light and let it run outside for 10 minutes before bringing it indoors

  • @eta262 And you can buy a catalytic filter and fit it over the top of the burner. It takes away all odor at full operation and greatly reduces odors at start-up and shut-down.

  • That was the best video . Thank you. I was a bit terrified to turn this on because I turned the knob (before lighting it) and saw nothing move ! Now I see how it works

  • i bought some kerosene from a gas station thinking it would be k-1 kerosene and it was red in color, is it safe to use in my heater, i realy dont know whart do use it for nore do i want to waist it, i hope i can use it in my heater, can some one tell me if its ok

  • Thanks for making this video. I grandparents used to use these to help heat their home all year round. One time the power went out, and she used it to cook eggs and bacon for breakfast.

My wife just got me one for Christmas, and I read the instructions. Your vid hear helped me understand everything I still had questions about.

  • You look old. But you sound very young. O_O.. Whats your secret?. =P

  • @orioncheung Albinism.

  • @orioncheung what? this is a dating service? ;D

  • @o0sunsi0o no homo. lol =P

  • KEROSENE, IT'S AN AIR PLANES FUEL?????

  • An excellent and informative video! I'm considering getting on of those heaters and it's great to know how to use it ahead of time!

  • Is kerosene at the gas pumps the same that they sell at Home Depot? They sell 1 gallon containers for 10 buck, but the pump at the station has it for 4.59 a gallon?????

  • We were just given a kerosene heater by a friend (it is the same one in your video). It had old kero in it when we got it and a wick that had some blackening on the edge. we drained out the kero and replaced with new and bought a new wich and replaced it as well. My husband cannot seem to get it to burn without smoke. Any tips or ideas?

  • @sparkfan1965 Having the wick too high will cause that, but I assume by watching the video you know that already.

  • @CraigTube The wick is at its lowest setting according to the dial, but I am wondering if somehow I put the wick on incorrectly. I guess my next move will be to remove the wick and try reinstalling it.

  • @sparkfan1965 Yes that sounds like it could be it. I think you're supposed to install the wick with the dial all the way up. When you turn the wick dial off, the wick should be way down inside the burner.

  • Thanks.. I just bought one for my 99 year old mother. You might have two of them one to have refueled ready to go and one going.

  • Thanks.. I just bought one for my 99 year old mother.

  • Great video man they are 40% off toomorrow at my Canadian Tire store I ll go get one for sure thank you mate

  • hi craig thats for the info we have two question please, how is you kerosene herater during now and is your model brand a discontinue one and if so did they make a new one from kero world model like this one kw-24/kc2400 23,000 btu model thanks craig.

  • Great video! Glad to see you are helping getting the word out with one of the best choices available fuel-wise for emergency preparedness.

  • Awsome info on K-heaters.. Thanks for sharing.. i ran mine some last year and i live in a tariler.. is that a bad thing? smelled kinda bad.. maybe i didnt adjust my wick down enought.. would u recomend cracking a window in a trailer.?

  • @brucenunn37 Yes, I would ventilate for sure.

  • Great video, delighted you allowed me to put a link to this on my company website. Very informative and good solid practical advice. For orders within Ireland,UK and Europe visit heaterking website Thanks again Craig.

  • Well done and great info, I've been looking at kerosene heaters and wondering how reliable/good they were.

  • will it go out if it it tipped over?

  • @MrGunner109 Yes it has a spring loaded auto shut off.

  • Had the same heater in 1982. The paint flaked off. Never forgot the smell of kerosine. It's basically rocket fuel.

  • do you need new wick or change the wick? how much does kerosene cost? and where can one buy kerosene ?

  • @healingunicorn You buy kerosene wherever you buy camping gear. Price?? The wick should last a long time. I'm not sure exactly.

  • do you need new wick or change the wick? how much does kerosene cost? and where can one buy kerosene ?

  • we have paraffin over here in the UK, but it is being phased out now.

  • when the power goes out here i just throw another stick in the stove we run an oil hot water boiler, and a wood stove, the wood stove does about 3/4 of the heating.

  • The advertisement sucks. I left.

  • Hey, good news. This heater is coming up on sale at Canadian TIre on Feb 26 2011. It's on for $150 which is half price. Good price even for CT.

  • Believe it or not Craig, but there are a lot of places that use these exclusively during the winter in Japan. I agree that they're great for emergencies, but people usually recommend that you 'air out' your room every hour or so when you use these for extended periods because they will 'make you stupid'. People in Japan usually do heat up tea or coffee on their kerosene heaters though! It's a nice hidden feature for sure. Thanks for all your nice videos!

  • 24 hours isn't to bad of a power outage in the summer, after hurricane juan came through here in Nova Scotia some people were without power for 2 to 3 weeks. The grocery stores all around the halifax area lost more then a quarter million dollars in perishable food, crazy!

  • Actually Socialism wont do a damn thing for me except raise my taxes, raise the cost of living, and make the government bigger.

As for my heater being stolen from me, I dont think so- I have a license to carry.

Your thinking is wrong. look into it.

  • To be prepared, if only we all thought this way!

  • a practically identical heater is $129 at Home Depot in the US.

DuraHeat 23,000 BTU Portable Kerosene Heater. SKU # 681026.

Socialism in Canada costs plenty- it seems everything up there is double the price.

  • @Mike1614b Socialism will keep your kerosene heater from being stolen from you on your way home from home depot.

  • @Mike1614b Socialism in Canada? no way ....;)

  • Hi Craig, I like your video, OOO mechanicles I just love it!!!!! I did a series as a video responce to your kerosene heater video, all about the mechanicles on one, great topic, keep up the vids craig, Mark, aka scatterotv

  • I don't get it Craig....where is the homebrew during the recording of this video? Oh wait....Fire and Hombrew don't mix. LOL!

  • Those things are great to have around! Our furnace went south,so we pressed ours into service (a big rectangular one). I found some oil filled heaters (looks like the old coil radiators) for $37 at walmart. We've been paying $3.49 per gallon for K1 at the gas station. A lot cheaper than the do it yourself stores, which were $9.99 per gallon.

  • That looks real close to the one I borrow from my family. They let me keep it, cause I did have a power outage a few years ago and they just want me to keep it just in case. Good thing too. I live in Oklahoma and the other week we set an all time low for the state at -35 degrees. Luckily no power outage for me.

  • Can you do a brew on it?

  • Diesel will burn in one of those things. I imagine alcohol would work as well. Not that anyone would want to if they had a supply of kerosene available - it's an emergency alternative if the situation require it . At my house we've been suffering without heat for the past two weeks, ran out of wood! It's been -20 or lower every night. I finally found two cords of dry maple & my wife & I put it into the basement yesterday. Could have used a kerosene heater, yes sir; that would have been nice.

  • Craig,

What is the cost of the one container of kerosene these day?...By the way thanks for this kind of information or video you have a knack for explaining products....

    Thanks

    Dave

  • Thanks craig , great video . I own a kerosene heater almost like yours . It heats up the house nicely . Thanks again looking forward to more : )

  • We have a wood stove, but this is a great idea. In canada its sketchy because all it takes is a few trees to go down and your power can be out for a day. In that temp, your house will freeze and pipes burst! Gah! Love your vids, sir. Liked :)

  • Great advice Craig! I will have to get one, thanks for the information!

  • when i was a kid, my parents had one of these. we used it all the time in the winter to save on the heating bill. they are very reliable, and should last for many years. great video as always craig. cheers!!!

  • @CraigTube

You probably don't know, but here in Kentucky we had a giant ice storm a couple years back. Like 4 inches of ice on everything. Needless to say, everyone in our town of 54k + lost power. Luckily, I had my power restored in 3 days. However, some of my friends didn't have it for upwards of 29 days. Some form of a heater really would have helped back then.

    Thanks for the tips!

  • I bought a red kerosene ? whats the differnet between 1k and red color kerosene ?

  • why do your videos now take a few weeks to show up on your homepage? You know, on the right hand side of the featured video, even when i hit sort by date added

  • We have a wood stove that we use more then the furnace. but its a pain to haul wood. I think that a kerosene heater would be great.

  • good thing i live in florida lol

  • I would rather have a furnace power transfer switch and a small generator to warm my house than a furnace that exhausts fumes into my house.

  • I must be a Craig Tube nut I just watched this entire video and I live in a climate that never drops below 10 C

  • @thegentlearts same here =P

  • me and my mate call this preparing for an emergency "armageden" (natural or political disaster) where for a long period of time. so we have it sussed with wood fires that heat our houses, electricity from a generator in a river and wind!!! and we modified various cars and generators to run on ethanol which can me easily and made and stored!!!.. (but not really legal) and for food we live on a farm and well beer.. thats why i have been watching you ;)

  • lol it was 1 c in devon last night

  • man craig you should feel it wher ei live, fairbanks alaska, was -43F last night :(

  • Hey Craig...I used to use a kerosene heater every winter when I lived in Pennsylvania for like 8 years- loved them!...It really comes in handy and helps cut heating costs big time in comparison with electric prices. The best thing to do in my experience , is to fill it up outside, and also light it outside so it "burns off" the initial kerosene on the wick, and the smell wont linger in your home as well....great video bud ^5

  • That looks a lot like the one available at Canadian Tire right now for $299. I want one now. I think I will save my Canadian Tire money for that now. Maybe a sale will come up.I could use it to heat my garage when I need to do some work in there.

  • @threeque I did buy it from Canadian Tire. Maybe it was $299. Hard to remember. You won't regret having it. The thing is a power house. I sleep well knowing I have it.

  • @CraigTube I have been checking and it seems it does go on sale for around $199. I am setting my Canadian Tire to send me a sale alert email on it! It's funny the thought of the power going out crossed my mind during the last storm. Now I am thinking this wold be great for occasional heating of my garage as well. Thanks for the vid by the way. You keep coming up with good topics.

  • The only thing I don't like about them if how expensive kerosene is. That's why I went with a propane heater.

  • @redpillftw I have been trying to find a cost comparison for electric vs propane vs kerosene.I guess for emergency purposes cost of fuel is a minor consideration over convenience. But if I need to choose something for heating my garage on weekends, what would be better, cheaper? Right now I have a 220v 4000 watt space heater. But I like the idea of being able to heat my house during power outages. The one site I found made it look like propane is quite a bit more expensive than propane. ????

  • @threeque For the time being... At least in the US where I live... Electricity cost more than propane/natural gas. I have a 99.9% efficient heater that runs at the fraction of a cost something similar in electric.

  • it's -27C here in Latvia now ;D

  • What model is this and how much did it cost you?

  • @AlcoholLevel Well it's back tucked under my work bench, but I believe it's a Kero World. Not sure the model, but if it looks like mine, it's likely the same. I think I payed around $200. Well worth the investment.

  • I have one as well.... it's over 30 years old and still works great!

  • those things scare me to death...don't really know why...most of the fires we hear about around here are from someone puting a space heater too close to something flammable, or someone who didn't install their wood burning stove correctly...I need one of those in my shop.

  • @bmeyer44 I think if we all use common sense, these fires can be avoided. Cheers.

  • craig, very nice video. There are diesel generators for sale.. Slightly more expensive maybe as a gasoline generators though... i've never seen kerosin in the stores overhere, but i think it's ''terpentine'' or ''wasbenzine'' called here in Holland.

  • dude, do you have kerosine in your hookah?

  • Comment removed

  • Memorex88 here. I've had a kerosene heater for over 20 years now and it saved us during the 1998 ice storm which left us with no power or heat for 2 weeks! It's true that the kerosene stays stable for many years as I had to clean years of dust off the unit but it lit up and burned no problem with the years old fluid that was in there.

Glad I own one, just in case!

  • Nice video Craig!

Good to have one of those heaters, i own a Zibro heater and use it every winter.

    Cheers!

  • OK, I have to be the safety guy. These things can and do give of CO. In today's air tight homes, ventilation with these things is even more crucial than days gone by. To be on the safe side, get a battery operated CO detector for the room it is in. Cheers!

  • @threeque I totally agree.

  • @CraigTube P.S. That's kind of why I spent a lot of time explaining the flame hight. If not properly adjusted, problems can occur. Our CO detector has never gone off as long as the heater is run the way I showed. I did am experiment last night where I ran it too high, and my smoke detectors went off. Always have smoke and CO detectors in house at all times, and especially when you have little experience with these heaters.

  • Good video Craig, handy thing to have id say.

  • Craig, here in Rhode Island my family is using a 6500w generator purchased from Home Depot. Nice point about fuel and how long it stays stabile. I keep 15 gallons of unleaded on hand which will get me about 3 days. Depends on the load I am placing on it. Of course when I purchase my fuelin November I have to place the stabilizer in it which claims it will keep for up to a year. You can never be prepared enough, especially when we live where it gets ungodly cold.

  • This is so random of a video lmao

  • @5cott226 And use PAM Cooking spray on your door seals to stop them from freezing.

  • That's the exact same heater I own lol!
