  • It comes from the Latin word for "hybrid" and was used to describe plants, animals, and minerals. Words that developed from this term have been used for thousands of years. The mule is just one example and calling yourself a mulatto no more compares yourself to one than it does to a metal alloy like bronze, unless you choose to mean it that way. When I use the term, I'm much more influenced by the heritage and history of Mulattos than by an animal. Any offense others take is their own problem.

  • ur mula

  • If you take offense, then you grant the definition as a negative. I'd tell my kid, she can be black and proud as well as white and right, or whatever the current mantra of racist groups is.

Maybe you hang around so called "thinkers" who are racist as hell and hate your dad or your mom, and have taught you to hate yourself as a result.

    I'm not sure.

I'm sure my child will question her "race" at some point, but I hope she never allows it to become her philosophy.

  • @eddgeric00 not actually proud of it, why should I?

  • mulatto is not a negative word. its a perfectly fine way of saying half white and half black...

  • @lolacastellano13 How can someone be "half white" ..white is not an ethnicity, but a political classification. It is not synonymous with being of European origin. The Irish were once NOT white.. The Ashkenazim who are absolutely Europeans were NOT considered White. A child with a black parent is NOT white and not accepted as White nor classified as White nor does s/he function as white if white people know they have a black parent. Telling a child s/he is "half White" will only confuse them.

  • MOO - LUTT - OR

  • I just found out what it is and I like it

  • Who here is a mulatto and proud to be one

  • I personally prefer to be called a Mulatto person than any alternative. It's more specific, than Mixed or Bi-racial or even Black (which I do get called sometimes). Technically a White person could refer to themselves as 'Mixed heritage' (e.g.: Italian with Irish).

Who cares if it's derived from 'Mule' anyway, Mules are more patient and live longer than Horses and are faster and more intelligent than Donkeys ;)

  • yu look like Michelle Obama~

  • I know this is irrelevant, but you are beautiful!

  • Why the duck do some black people get offended when im talking about race. lets take this nigga: if yall talk about my race, im not gonna get like pissed of, i think its interesting bics. So i talk about it. Im Hungarian, 2000 years ago Hungarians came from the Ural mountains, they were mongoloid, so they mixed with indoeuropeans, mostly with dinarics, nordics, slavics, and so on.

  • @sujoms Um, those 'races' you listed are white. Pick up a history book if you wonder why some black people get offended when talking about race.

  • @HybridD91 yeah, they are white, but mongolics are not : OoO OO O O O so white + mongolic omfg

  • you are just a straight nigger

  • hey!i am a "mulatto" to but everyone sees me as" the black girl"

  • She is not mulatto, she is quadroon.

  • I don't understand why you have to define yourself as black or white. I've know African Amer. that appear more "mix" looking than you, AND have two African Amer. parents. I wish ppl would stop labeling themselves. That how separation in ethic groups begin.

  • I don't like the term "mulatto" either. I just don't like it. Every time I hear it I think of a mule...and I'm not a mule :)

  • I have a crush on you. Speedgrapher713@yahoo

  • I've never really understood the stigma around the word mulatto. I like to use it (but I'm not biracial) mainly because it's so much more specific to black and white in a nut shell. I've heard many biracial people use it for about the same reason. Although, I do like the term "biracial" more because it's way more unitary since it covers so many races. It's one step above just saying, "we're all human" in way.

  • I am the Sterile offspring of a donkey and a horse and you are a HOTTATO...lol

  • Nothing wrong with the word Mulatto. Hell I have a Mulatto grandson and he's damned cool. That's my 2-cents.

  • i like your hair

  • Go on girl im right here with you....im bi racial too im african n mexican.....i dnt say american cuz well like dat otha person said its not a race....i lovee being bi racial and i get a lot of ignorent comments sometimes on my race too.

  • @MDesireeJ

If American is not a race than Mexican isn't either. Although Mexican may be the colloquail term, I think the word you are looking for is hispanic. Just like hispanics don't speak Mexican, they speak Spanish.

  • @pjmacphee Hispanic isn't a race. Most mexicans are native ameri-indian and mestizo. Though some are white, and pardo, etc

  • "Japanese and American"? American isn't a race. Unless you're speaking of the true Natives.

  • I want to marry Biracial Tiffany!

  • I think you can say whatever you want to say and if people have a problem with it they should shut the hell up and not view your videos!!! its a free country... why must everyone put their two cents in everything!!! People should just mind their own damn business and stop telling everyone else what they should and should not say!!! P.S YOur hair is beautiful and so are you!! .::GOOD DAY::.

  • in reference to that beaner cwarton.

  • there is nothing positive about the word mullato it is derogatory and you should have been using it .

  • lol @ how you first heard of Mulatto. Listen. Anything can be made to seem negative. I'll give you a clear example with which you might be familiar and yet unfamiliar with. Cracker is used negatively against caucasion people. You get mad at them you call them cracker. Back in the day, it was not an offensive term and caucasions actually embraced being called a cracker, it was positive. :) Words can have positive/negative connotations and me and other Mulattoes have no ill will about the term.

  • @Qabalist We were called cracker because of the sound our whips made on slave flesh!!!!!! Long Live the South!

  • @suckmycod Exactly.

  • @suckmycod MAY WHITE SUPREMACY (RACISM) and those who practice it die a swift and eternally recounted death! Amen!

  • @WONDAWOMAN What's your last name? Bet It's European. You have no Idea who your African ancestors are because THEY sold each other into slavery. I have no sympathy for the thuggish disrespectful black culture of today. I will never be sorry for that.

  • (last part)well i hope u really look into that word and have some self respect and self worth and be happy about who u r and no longer carry this on...let me know how u get on in ur quest 2 finally xcept urself

  • (2nd part)r u not happy with the results that came from your parents aka u..do u think it turned out like a horrible mistake and unnatural 'mula'

  • that word is soooo hurtful so i dont like that you openly call urself that at all its so bad its so so bad dat u have no idea its horrible n it means much deeper n much worst than how simply u put it. it does mean wat u said but it was 1st used 2 show biracial ppl dat they r mixed n the outcome is a 'mula' aka a horrible ugly cross bred im shocked dat u openly state thats how u c urself its sad...

  • Actually Mullatto stems from the Latin word "mulus" which means hybrid. Also the Arabic word "muwallad", which means multiracial.

  • I learned the word when I first read the book UNCLE TOM'S CABIN in the 6th or 7th grade

  • i've been familiar with the word "mulatto" sinse i was in the 3rd grade when some kid in my school also felt they should "educate" me about my own race. i actually didnt take offense in it, i never really found the word to be offensive

  • hey! thanks for sharing that! I'm actually pretty conflicted about the word. was that kid at school white or black?

  • lol, actually the person was an eskimo XD

  • :-)

  • haha, I think they like to be called Inuit, at least that's what a Canadian native told me.

  • hey tiff is Andrea black?? or white??

  • hey. white white white :-D

  • @valeriethechinadoll If you're that confused about the person they are probably not black.

  • uurrghhhh... what a horrible intro to the word.. people never cease to amaze me with thier 'educational' rants lol

  • yep. to this day i don't know if i think she knew she was almost calling me a nigger( i hate even writing that word), or if she was just regurgitating crap she heard from her mom. thanks so much for watching!!!!

  • Why are people so obsessed with "race"? You cannot tell a person's heritage by their skin color...ONLY by their DNA. The ironic thing is, we all have much more in common than differences. You may actually be MORE white biologically than some bigots claiming to be white. NO ONE IN AMERICA IS 100% WHITE! What does that mean anyway?! We are all made in God's perfect image! Claim ALL of your heritage...it is who you are!

  • i agree and that's what i'm trying to do

  • . any of your parent's children survive?

  • Hi! Thanks for watching my video. I really enjoy yours :-) Was this question for me? If so, I'm not sure what the question is...I'm an only child...

  • cwarton

  • cwarton White racists (usually poor & frustrated, looking for someone to blame)stay busy focusing on disrespecting Black, Brown & Red people, they dont notice George Bush doesnt care about broke whites either.

I guess those kind of people feel a little bit of priviege is better than none. I get hopeful when I see young people working together to make a difference.

  • Well said!!

  • i'm just racist with black monkeys alright ,,, i don't have nothing against another people , i'm half white and half latin but i still white ,but black people r animals r just that animals or worst than animals !!!!! I HATE THAT HORRIBLE COLOR !

  • so you're watching this because....bye bye!

  • cwarton.. black monkeys? guess what color a monkey is when you shave off all its hair ^_^

  • you cant hate blacks and be okay with everyone else. blacks and anyone mixed with black is the best race ever.

its fucking mexicans like you that should be fucking killed and exterminated!!!!!

  • ur kiddin right.....

  • First of all, I see my self as a woman, and then Scottish...I know, mixed race is very vague but it's what I use lol...I don't really like the word mullatto, don't mind other biracial people using it just as long as they don't calle me, in an ideal world we would all just be seen as human...of course I'm proud of were I come from, but sometimes it gets so confusing, and when people question how I see my self (mixedraceblack) I feel really insicure! But oh well..happiness is what counts!

  • i kno i hate when people say"what r u?"its like ummmm last i checked i think im human lol...i think words that confine mixed people 2 a category r confusing when i look up biracial it says blk/white every time & sooo my moms is blk and my father is cuban on 1side wit creole/white on the other so im not exactaly split down the middle.i would rather ppl i dont really kno not ask me"what i am"cuz who wants to break that down.if u wanna get technical im sure my mom is not "100%blk"

  • i dunno i never hear anyone refer to my asian/white friend as biracial its all confusing i dont get that...i google and it always says mixed with blk/white ancestry so if biracials refer to themselves as mixed at times and if i say im mixed ppl automatically think b/w...its jus like what do i say?that im multiracial?2ppl still have a big ?mark like"so what does that all involve?" this is a bunch of thoughts that have nothin really 2do wit this vid but its all 2 confusing lol

  • your asian/white friend not being referred to as biracial is a clear indication to me that the one drop rule is alive and well. Asian blood doesn't "taint" white blood in the same way that black blood does, is what i infer from this. It is confusing and maybe i'm too sensitive, but maybe not... thanks so much for contributing to the biracial dialogue! I hope you are doing well!

  • well my friend olivia says shes biracial or mixed when she doesnt feel like explaining her background 2 ppl and others jus dont except that and say stuff like"biracial? your not blk" and alot of people think biracial means blk/white only

  • wow! i'm truly surprised. And for some reason very glad to hear that. But it is confusing. I wonder how it happened that people think biracial (which I think is pretty ambiguous) means black/white. Thanks so much for this info!

  • thats jus what ive seen.when i talk about my friend and i say shes biracial ppl do think blk/white and i dont kno why or how that came to b

  • mulato is a old school word I think new school is mix so what.

  • I get it now!

    Nice vid, 5 STARS*****

  • Yay! Thank you :-D!

  • I probably would be irritated with people asking me "what are you?" all the time too. I wonder if it's an issue in societies where racial definitions are more fluid? Totally off topic, but imagine my surprise when I learned that the word "pickaninny" is from a portuguese word used to describe little black slave children with wild hair. A form of the word "pickney" meaning kids is still in use in the caribbean. words are crazy sometimes, and yes, i'm a word freak...

  • i'm a bit of a word nerd myself. I didn't know that tho. Pickaninny conjures up images of little kids with lots of wild braids. I've referred to myself as one when i'm in a refusing to do my hair mood. But, I thought the word just meant slave child. Words are crazy. i love them. and hate them sometimes because when i'm trying to form new thoughts and ideas there don't seem to be words for them and i get frustrated. talk about off topic :) sorry

  • "what are you"?-people stupid sometimes

  • tru dat

  • that's wierd...i didn't know people had a problem with that word, too...

  • they totally do. i get lots of comments and messages about it. i understand why, but....it's the word we have, so.... i don't know. I'm looking forward to your question answering vid!

  • oic....

yea i'll probably do it tonight..i'm charging my battery :/

i love your hair by the way. it looks like silk..lol
