serious question i just came across a M1 and i been hearing that you could use 5.56mm or a 223 bullet for more penetration plus it's more modern easier to find is this true. it would really be helpful if someone could help me
Dude the M1 Carbine fires a 30 caliber bullet and uses a straight walled case whoever told you it'd shoot 5.56 is ignorant to the point of retardation.
Was the malfunction simple or could it have been fatal? I'm thinking of buying this one with a pinned stock and would appreciate any positive or negative feedback. Thank you. :)
@ajpeters12 Actually, Bubba, I have considerable experience in military and law enforcement shooting, including actual combat time which I know you lack. I'm also a competitive shooter, machine gun owner and firearms instructor.
And you're still a fat goober mishandling a firearm in public, pretending to be something that you'll never, ever be: manly.
Was wondering if this is a good house safety weapon to store...Im 17 and in a year I can buy a rifle in Texas without a license or permit I believe and I want a weapon to keep my family safe without it being like a shotgun...I also happen to like this gun and I really want it.
@Charlie2272092 Yeah, it's a good choice for self/home defense. Reliable. Small. Low Recoil. Good mag capacity. Round hits about as hard as a .357 magnum. Lower risk of penetrating your walls vs other rifles. Sights may not be the best during low light in home emergency so consider an Ultimak or similar replacement handguard. Won't permanently alter the rifle and you can mount a red dot sight easily.
Okay.... being a total newbie to guns and costs thereof, how would you guys rate this as a beginner's carbine? Yes? No? Maybe So? What kind of carbine should a newbie like me go for? (kinda broke, so that's pretty much the biggest factor.)
@Jehosh27 I have an IBM M1 Carbine. It handles like a 10/22 and the recoil is mild. As far as accuracy goes, it's pretty reasonable for realistic distances. However, I can't recommend this gun as a first carbine to anyone because it's a 50+ year old weapon and ammo costs are pretty expensive for all the more power it provides. Get an AK. It'll be more reliable, more powerful, cheaper ammo, and parts are everywhere. I paid $725 for my M1. For the same $, you can get an AK and a ton of ammo
@Jehosh27 I would like to add that I bought my M1 for the sake of collecting. The WWII carbines are drying up and the value has nowhere to go but up. I've turned down $1200 offers for mine already. Who knows what it'll be worth in 20 years... If you're going to buy one as an investment, then go for it. If you want something to shoot, then you should go for an AK. If it was 3 years ago, I'd say get an SKS, but the value of those has skyrocketed, and they're hard to find for less than $400.
@Jehosh27 I'm glad I could help. You won't be disappointed with an AK. The cheapest AK you can get is a Romanian WASR 10. It was my first AK. A lot of people bash them for having canted sights, etc., but if they inspect the gun before they buy it, they wouldn't have a problem. These guns go for $350-400. All AKs have chrome lined barrels (which last forever) except the Yugo M70. In my opinion, an AK variant is the most practical semi automatic center fire rifle out there.
told a guy at work i owned a M1 carbine, he says "you mean the M1 garand" i say no its the M1 carbine. he says "its actually called the M1 garand" it took me days to explain to him they are not the same gun. lol
my grandpa fought in vietnam and ww2 and stuff and he has a airaska and swisserland sniper he let me shoot the m1 carbine for the first time yesterday on thinksgiving im only 11 tho i killed my first deer with the m1 carbine yesterday lol
I have one my mom and dad got me when I was 11 as my 1stt deer gun.I did not know at the time it was to small to hunt deer.lol. I am 42 now.It is in my gun safe..I would not take 1000 for it.
I shoot AK-rounds 7.62x39mm still much cheaper than the less power 150m max effective range shit.....Fuck that rifle and .30 carbine rounds....NO GOOD for hunting anyway!! If u shoot wild hogs and used this round.....(even M-16)..must watch out for lack of power...American military guns are bull shit, only design to kill human (slow kill too)....
The bolt almost sucked that guys shirt into the action. You can see at the end of the first bumpfire segment, that the guy's shirt has a crease in it where the bolt almost grabbed it.
found some m1 carbine shells and a head to one on a different beach but yea.. found some old shells here in england where you guys had been practising for d day on our beaches :)
was it a new rear site you got , I am currently purchasing an m1 but it is missing the rear site , so i am trying to find a good place to buy one any help would be great
i just realised that this gun is a little bit like the m14, not a whole lot, but kind of, just thought id say that, idk if the bullet size is similar at all tho or anything
@futurerev21 Their cartridges have the same diameter, but M14 uses a full rifle round (7.62x51mm NATO) while the .30 Carbine of the M1 is a reduced round - it has much less propellant. The rifle is also much shorter. It's more comparable to the M4 in power. On the other hand, the M1 is half the weight of the M14.
I looked up the muzzle energies, that should illustrate the point:
@marvincz3 yea/ personally i'd prefer the m14 or perhaps the russian sks the m14 has the modification of firing on fully automatic and it's designed as a rifle so highly effective. The m1 carbine was designed for it's lightness and it used a small cartridge so it was easy to carry so it was designed for mobility if anything. but on the other hand artillery is mobile :) haha.
Its called bump firing. You hold your thumb through the trigger guard and secure it behind your belt loop, then pull the gun forward, firing a round, and the recoil from the round pushed the gun back, and the forward pressure from your other hand hits the trigger again. kind of a bad explanation. but if you search it on here you will find plenty of videos explaining it
My Grandpa fought with an M1 Carbine in Korea. He said that he loved this rifle. He was an NCO and personally requested one. Its light, durable, accurate and a skilled shooter can get a lot of rounds off in a short amount of time.
@skippers96 That happened to me before, the barrel/reciever of the firearm is held onto the stock by just the nose cap. I don't know if that's the proper name for it but you get the idea, the metal bit at the front of the stock. You loosen a screw on the side, slide it forward off the stock, take off the top wooden handguard that popped off, and the barrel/reciever lifts free. That top bit of wood popped off because the nose cap thing creeped forward a little. Easy problem to fix.
check my review on my dad m1 carbine my dad his handguard also came off we replace it with a wood handguard with diffrent color.his m1 carbine use to have a metal hand guard
the only type of rifle you can bump fire is semi auto because bolt or lever you have to pull a lever/cock bolt in between shots and if you had a fully auto bump firing would be pointless
Instead of pulling the trigger, you pull the rest of the rifle forward, so that your trigger finger's position stays constant. As you pull the rifle forward, the rigid trigger finger "pulls" the trigger. Once the rifle is fired, the recoil pulls the weapon back, so that the trigger is reset. However, since you are pulling the rifle forward, the trigger gets pulled again and again, until magazine is empty.
all guns can come in full auto, you can just rework the firing pin..look at people with automatic handguns. when you pull the trigger of a semi automatic, something stops the gun from firing again, but if you remove that, then you can full auto anything.
Not really. That's not really how it works at all. Firstly, it's not the firing pin, it's the disconnector, and it's not that they take something out, it's that they're putting more stuff in. Automatic weapons generally work on the principal that the disconector will catch the hammer so it doesn't follow the bolt forwards, since that won't reliably make it full auto, but rather they rely on another lever, so that when the bolt returns to battery, the disconnector lets go of the hammer.
The m1 carbines that were manufactured after the war for the Korean war and so on were full auto, but the original ww2 ones were not. This one is a ww2 model and is semi only.
@nateponco That's true, the CMP has them starting for about $400 for "beater" grade. If you don't mind waiting 2-3 months, the CMP is the way to go. I'm very happy with the Garand I bought from them.
No it is only a semi auto rifle. Bump firing uses the recoil of the previous shot to reset the trigger and fire the rifle again in rapid succession. It is like pulling the trigger really fast with your finger but a lot faster.
Your Uncel was very lucky to get it for $50 back in the 80's because a M1 Garand base on the condiction go for aroud $1000.00 or more depending on if its in mint condiction. Both the M1 Carbine and the M1 Garand go up in value every year so what your Uncel has is an investment right there.
I have tried gun shows. Here in California or should I say Commiefornia the M1 Carbines are high in price. The lowest I have seen in at a Califoria Gun Show is
Thats a reproduction. The originals cost anywhere from $650 to $2,000 dollars. Depending on how much money has been put into them. My M1 Carbine is Original, has a Bayonet Lug and a Adjustable sight (Which ups the value) and I have a original Bayonet for it. I also have a original case, about 8 clips, a bunch of stripper clips, A bandolier, and a reproduction guide book. So, my M1 is worth around $1,650.
I've read of some M1s that were converted to take 7.62 x 25 tokarev by the Chinese, and Iver Johnson made a model for one year that took 9 mm.
I think the M1 could also handle .357 SIG as well. I've never heard of any that were made, but considering that cartridge, it would probably work quite well in an M1 platform.
Some one got it right. The M-1 Carbine was designed to fill a new place in the modern battlefiled of WWII. They found that the battlefield was much more fluid and that back line troop where being caught in frontline events very rapidly. Since most back area troop where either armed with a pistol or no weapon at all, the military wanted a light weapon that could shoot out to 100 yds to give back area troops a weapon that they could defend themselves with if they found themselves in a firefight.

Awesome. One question: how do you bump fire at semi-auto rifle?
indestructableforce 2 years ago
the only type of rifle you can bump fire is semi auto because bolt or lever you have to pull a lever/cock bolt in between shots and if you had a fully auto bump firing would be pointless
Lukegpb 2 years ago
Aren't you an idiot. You missed the whole question on how to bump fire. He wasn't asking which mechanism can bump fire.
csmybuttt 2 years ago
Instead of pulling the trigger, you pull the rest of the rifle forward, so that your trigger finger's position stays constant. As you pull the rifle forward, the rigid trigger finger "pulls" the trigger. Once the rifle is fired, the recoil pulls the weapon back, so that the trigger is reset. However, since you are pulling the rifle forward, the trigger gets pulled again and again, until magazine is empty.

wow i wasn't aware that the m1 came full auto =s
SSTrooper18 2 years ago
all guns can come in full auto, you can just rework the firing pin..look at people with automatic handguns. when you pull the trigger of a semi automatic, something stops the gun from firing again, but if you remove that, then you can full auto anything.
hinduw 2 years ago

This one is a ww2 model and is semi only.
ginjaninja1988 2 years ago 2
How much did you get them for? and where?
uliuli08 2 years ago
Go to your nearest gun store to see if they have them. They can run upwards from 1000 dollars.
atarturk 2 years ago
If you want one order from the civilian marksmanship program, it is half the price and you get it delivered to your house.
nateponco 2 years ago
@nateponco That's true, the CMP has them starting for about $400 for "beater" grade. If you don't mind waiting 2-3 months, the CMP is the way to go. I'm very happy with the Garand I bought from them.

That's an M1. If you look close there is no selector lever on the left side of the receiver. What he is doing at 0:24 is called bump firing.

No it is only a semi auto rifle. Bump firing uses the recoil of the previous shot to reset the trigger and fire the rifle again in rapid succession. It is like pulling the trigger really fast with your finger but a lot faster.
disturbedone5009 2 years ago
AHH! Now I see it, im going to try that, looks cool.
RE4man101 2 years ago
Lol it's called bump firing..
cj397 2 years ago
I figured that out. Ive never tried that, but I will... I dont like to waste ammo though, .30 Carbine ammo is hard to find and its expensive too!

Lucky for the people of South Korea to buy it that cheep. Here in America I would be lucky if I got it for $700
Captb55806 2 years ago
They're actually selling them to American gun enthusiasts.

I am a American gun enthusiasts. If I could get one for a cheep price I would buy it.

my uncel has the garand and got his for $50 as a army surplus in the 80's
hioncheesenips 2 years ago
Your Uncel was very lucky to get it for $50 back in the 80's because a M1 Garand base on the condiction go for aroud $1000.00 or more depending on if its in mint condiction. Both the M1 Carbine and the M1 Garand go up in value every year so what your Uncel has is an investment right there.
Captb55806 2 years ago
I just picked one up with an under folding stock for $450. they can be had at a fair price try the gun shows
Knife226 2 years ago
I have tried gun shows. Here in California or should I say Commiefornia the M1 Carbines are high in price. The lowest I have seen in at a Califoria Gun Show is
$525.00 even that got sold very fast.
Captb55806 2 years ago

UCSPanther20 2 years ago
Cool, yeah .30 carbine is coming close to 1$ per shot!
HuntHawaii808 2 years ago
Some one got it right. The M-1 Carbine was designed to fill a new place in the modern battlefiled of WWII. They found that the battlefield was much more fluid and that back line troop where being caught in frontline events very rapidly. Since most back area troop where either armed with a pistol or no weapon at all, the military wanted a light weapon that could shoot out to 100 yds to give back area troops a weapon that they could defend themselves with if they found themselves in a firefight.
