when i think of katrina i think of new orleans... no fort lauderdale. before i watched this i didn't even know it hit in flordia!!!!thx for the vid, mark. you are really talented.
You got it. Was reading from a script. Sorry the narrative was not to your liking, next time we'll see if Peter Coyote or James Earl Jones is available.
Many of the loose wired traffic lights shown in the Fort Lauderdale portion since 2005 have been replaced by the fixed arm posts with the traffic lights mounted to the posts. For the most part, no more dangling traffic lights. I have heard that they are about 200K or more to replace - hence the switch to the fixed arm posts, less damage in future hurricanes.
Mark, great video! To answer your question around 2:25 as to why people were still driving around - August 25 was a Thursday and a work day for most. I work for the State and we were not allowed to leave until 3pm that afternoon. I believe Katrina became a Hurricane in the 5pm advisory. People working in private industry probably did not leave work early. I think Katrina's strengething came as a surprise for some and being the time of day it was coming into South Florida, many rushed home.
I remember Hurricane Katrina...I was only 5. I was so scared, and afarid. I cried my eyes out in the car from New Orleans to NC.My grandpa didn't want to leave so he stayed in the SuperDome. I was afarid he wouldn't make it. Thank GOD it was over!
@RandomGamingFTW Yes we hang the lights over the street , We have more than 2 lanes of traffic , and we have large trucks that can obstruct the view. You must live in a one horse town. When you go out into the world, you'll be amazed at the things you'll see.We have an object called a cell phone, you'll like it.
@RandomGamingFTW Right , this is an old area. Unlike the Netherlands, it hasn't been leveled by a war and then totally rebuilt. How old is the Netherlands, 65yrs. since WW2. This part of the country is hit often by hurricanes, and if we leveled everything damaged and rebuilt we would never get the job done. If you are from the Netherlands, maybe your country should spend more on education and less on appearance.
@banner1835 Can't be arsed to read what you just wrote, can't believe you put your time to argue with someone over the internet, guess it's not only the streets that look kinda poor..

A hurricane is what happens when God stirs up his coffee cup. He mixed a little sugar, a little cream, gave it a really good stir, and we got Katrina as a result :)
@Kalismoron I care and all the people affected here care... As for the bragging, are u that retarded??? I lost people I cared about, people that mattered... The only thing u've ever lost was ur virginity to that sex offender two years ago...
Wow.It was like Hurricane George (1990btw)I was only 3 months old and my parents where already prepared for it.Our dog Newton was safe and sound at my uncle's place. The 2 windows in fron of our house we gone.Puerto Rico lost great amount of money in agriculture.
Anyone who says Katrina didnt do shit needs to come visit South Mississippi... I was here 5 years ago and the entire coast was devestated... I lost 2 friends to this storm and my son was almost crushed in his bed by a 155 year old oak tree that took out the rear corner of my house...
It always about New Orleans this, Nawlins that, but Mississippi took more damage...
@lesofprimus1 who cares fact is that it effected everyone on the gulf coast from new orleans to mobile to pensicola. i find it kind of funny though you try to brag about your area being "more damaged"
I am from new orleans too but i live in aiken,sc i was so sad about new orleans when it was under water i went there in august to see some faimly and they are still trying to fix some of the damage buildings from hurricane katrina
in all honestly, i blame the government. they didnt provide the things people needed to evacuate and shit. yes, some people chose to stay, and thats their decision, but the government could've helped by a landslide..
@JakeASaurrrx I blame Nagin and the Kathleen Blanco for not providing these people transportation. They could have used school buses if necessary. When you see a massive storm like that approaching your coastline, you take all necessary precautions.
@RetroJenny Exactly and they turned it into a racial thing which i find strange because many poor black people and white people made it out despite lack of TRUE leadership from Nagin and Blanco. Standing in New Orleans after the fact and destruction passed is just stupid. Neither the Mayor nor the Govenor had and plan in place for a category 5 heading to their shores. very shameful. But as one guy said from New Orleans "I saw the size of it on TV and I knew I had to leave immediatly" .
@JakeASaurrrx I don't see how people ALWAYS blame the Goverment when something goes wrong, they had plenty of time to leave, they chose not too and now they want people to cry for them, none of them get any sympathy from me. At some point you need to take responsibility for yourself and your family and LEAVE. It's always the Goverment or the White man, Cry another tune.
@xxjayfrostxx you mean the old sick car-less and poor people - the senior citizens and nursing home people who had no way out- its easy to say things like you said but the facts are always more enlightning and far more explanatory as why most died! Sure some people stayed by choice but most didnt!
THE Hurricane, because Katrina will always be THE to the ones who went through it was bad enough, but it only lasted hours. The aftermath, so often overlooked was part of went on for months and years. The cleanup, the totaling of losses, human and material is part of the whole package of misery. For us who survived was years of putting things back together and I think the Gulf Coast has done well. I would like to thank all the people and organizations who came to the coast and helped us!
*sigh* i remember this. i was born in New Orleans and I've been staying in NC,today is the day Katrina hit New Orleans :'( 5 years....I'm on the newspaper because of this.it was so deadly!!
I BIN IN THIS HURRICAN. I WILL NEVER EVER FOR GET THAT . BUT I DID NOT BE IN A TORNADO. WELL WIN ONE HAPPENS I WILL WANT TO BE IN SCHOOL WHEN A TORNADO. BECAUSE MY MOM HAS VISTING HER FRINED WHEN A HURRICAN AND I LIVE IN A FARM AND IN Y BACE MINT I HAD LOTS OF RATS IN IT.
Man im from wisconsin and im 26 now so i was 21 , I remember watching what was happening at the bar , Just felt helpless for all those people. I mean up here it gets down to like 20 to 30 below and we will get 10-15 inches of snow in a day , I dunno if i could deal with a hurricane. some brave ass people in new orleans, If i was there I wouldnt have made it
I remember when my town was doing donations to the victims of this disaster. I end up donating about $1500, canned goods, water and clothes. I couldn’t donate as much money to Haiti but did so with lot of other things as well.
@WhyIsNotAvailable I appreciate the compliments, but I think any decent person would have done the same so naturally it was the right thing to do in both cases :-)
Why would sombody dislike this video ?. It's just a documantary on a hurricane. A pretty in depth good one for that matter. It takes some balls to do this.
I remember when Katrina came ashore in Broward County, Florida before heading into the gulf and hitting New Orleans and Mississippi. If I recall, the hurricane hit Broward as a category one. I lived a little ways inland from the beach so there was not much damage in my area. The storm that really did the damage for us was when Wilma hit 2 months later back in 2005. Almost the entire South Florida region (over 10 million) was out of power for a good two weeks with a mandatory 7pm curfew.
My heart goes out 2 all that parished during this horrifying storm....BUT...and i mean no disrespect...but millions were told to GET OUT and EVACUATE....and didnt.....I also blame fema for failing these people....it took DAYS before help arrived and thousands died while in wait...president bush did NOTHING and had the nerve go down there and wave his hand and smile??....like hes trying 2 get election votes.....the government fucked its people.....royaly
@chubphucka As a storm victum my self, i can tell you that getting out is not that simple.
-
If you dont have a car they you have to go to a shelter, if you do have a car, you have hope to god that you have enough gas to make it out of the traffic jams. if you dont you will cause an even larger traffic jam .
-
some road are backed up by miles to get out of cities., when Ivan(2004 ) came threw, there was a road backed up 17 miles.
very informative. i liked this video, hope to see more bout this season! and i love how HURRICANE EXPERTS get questioned by ppl that have no idea what they're talking about. one thing ppl forget, it didn't only hit new orleans.... watch the video again and take notes...
The hurricane that wiped out Galveston was a much bigger disaster. So was the Earthquake in San Francisco. I clicked stop after 10 seconds. Don't get your history lessons from CNN
@ArtStone but both of those happened a century ago more or less- katrina was a major disaster and in the top five for sure in our lifetimes! And considering it happened with engineer designed levees and all our technology and emergency response makes it even more tragic- plus the fact that Missisippi had damage as bad or even worse- Mt St Helens though was one of the most damaging ecological disasters in us history - time will tell with the oil spill!
Respond to this video... i know i made this comment early but it is wierd it been five years ago that katrina hit landfall. but its funny how the gulf coast still growing strong beside the oil spill.
@MattDee888 Well that's not entirely the case. Lowe's was the sponsor of our field and education work, it was not their Tahoe, they helped us fund the work- and the Tahoe.
Oh yeah hey man wasn't trying to give you a hard time, I figured there was some relationship there. The documentary is awesome, I've watched it several times already.
I think the only reason people there in florida werent taking it serious is because if you just think about it, florida gets a certain average numger of hurricanes each year. Im pretty sure everyone there are used to it so they just act like its not a big deal. Now when it comes to probably a cat 3 and higher, then they will probably take action.
Lord knew in 2003 & told you don't disturb the water. I felt for I wood'nt be disturbed if eye sleep in a graveyard instead of a hollow father, I could tone it down a bit and maybee tent out a few people.
People that said it wasn't that bad it dint really hit Florida it hit luisiana and surrounding states ont say that something that was horrible wasn't that bad so obiously it dint look that bad because it was was close to the hurricane but not in the hurricane
@SammyTheCoolCat Yes, real bad.. New Orleans is on its last leg. Thats why we hopeing that they dnt have another hurricane down here like Betsy&&Katrina.
I'm from New Orleans. I can remember being in a motail in Houston, Teaxs. Sittin on the one bed my mom and dad and two sisters was sureinq and my dad put it on CNN and they showed New Orleans UNDER water. I bust out in cryinq. My people had to confur me. My cousin cousin had to hold me and talk to me. (BTW, I was 12 at the time).. Ever sinces 2005, everytime I c hurrican katrina or talk about it. I bust crying... I wont forget that. I was 12, my sister was 10, and my other sister was 5 yr old.
@YounqRidaBby yes thank you for telling your story, I have so much empathy, sympathy any of those woords for all of the survivors of the disasters in Louisiana.
My heart goes out to all of you....for what its worth
@alinjbingv All thanks ! When we heard that they have a hurricane in the guft , we all qot scared in New Orleans . But it didnt come towards us and we was so happy !
I remember Isidore, it happened a week after Hanna. We got a ton of rain. From Katrina, we got quite a bit of wind, and barely any rain. And this was about 200 miles away in Northwest Florida.
I have to lift my hat to you good sir. I remember 2005 I was working a lumber processing place in Ohio when I heard about it. I remember paying close attention through the whole event and shortly leaving for the Army afterwards. I got to see the area briefly in 06 and later in 09. I am sorry to say that things were only somewhat better at that time (9th ward... my heart goes out to them)
Wow, there sure are some immature people posting on this video. This video wasn't meant to incite a political argument or ignore Louisiana. It was meant to document the effects of the Katrina in Mississippi, which is where they were located. Being from the Midwest, I really appreciate documentaries like this because I've never seen nor been through a hurricane. All of your videos are fantastic!! This video and the hurricane Ike videos are unreal. Keep up the great work!!!
I was borm in New Orleans and lived all through the Gulf Coast all my life and I don't fear the Catagory 1's or 2's its the 3's that get us worried. The devastion of Katrina broke my heart so much. My childhood neighborhood gone in St. Benard Parish (Village Square) and my other home, Chef Metaur Highway, so on and so forth. Never thought I would return home but did this year for Super Bowl 44 and what do you know, the Saints win. It was great being back hom, going back in August.
@HighFlyingAddict saints werent supposed to win.. they paid the refs.. brees is a little bitch.. new orleans sucks. hope you get another hurricane.. packers=super bowl this year
That's because we Floridians are so used to hurricanes, we don't fear category 1 hurricanes. Katrina was a minimal cat 1 hurricane over Florida. We don't worry about that kind of a storm. Only the media and the TV weathermen and women make it exciting and sensational. I remember I was at work that day and I drove home in the afternoon during the hurricane.
its just becuase we have heard the hype so many times and nothing ever happens that when one does come in we just treat it as a big storm. Those winds would not keep me off the road, the only reason it looked bad is becuase its blowing palms, that wind aint gonna kill you *rolls eyes*
Have you been in the situation "I'm going to get killed in this one"?
If a hurricane ever hit New York, it would be ex-New York. It would flood a lot of Manhattan island, the subways, and 100mph winds would be 150mph winds through the streets due to the building. Weather Channel has a video on one such hurricane.
@supergirl2025 I could never imagine a hurricane hitting New York haha. It just dosen't sound right. You always hear about them in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. But hardly ever in New York or anywhere on the northern eastcoast.
the intensely warm water and massive heat buildup from ground zero would also cause the hurricane to strengthen considerably more at that point , between the massive amount of water being sucked up into the air (think about it, how do hurricanes work in the first place?) and the fireball from ground zero detonation = really bad fuckin idea!!
nucler weapon dropped or detonate air burst in the eye of a hurricane would spread radioactivity much farther much faster and would be very impractical, it would cause a much bigger problem than the hurricane itself, and no, it would not break apart the wind, laws of gravity + laws of physics, what happens when you create an outward blast with a shockwave on something that has perpetual motion and extreme power to begin with, think about it carefully, aside form that, govt wouldnt allow it
if you people think New Orleans was bad, thats nothing, one of these days, a monster will hit Houston/Galveston mark my words, its not a matter of IF but When, and Galveston will go bye bye complete, Houstons gang population alone is almost as big as the entire population of new orleans, so you can imagine how much worse that will be. Needles to say, the National Guard will have their hands quite full having fun with that, and I know, I lived down there for a good long time, rode storms out etc
natskivna I was there too during that giant clusterfuck they called an evacuation, and yes, people did die from it, I saw tanker trucks with fuel rolling down hwy 146 with miles and miles of traffic right next to them and lines of cars leading into gas station pumps running out of gas from idling for so long because of the outbound lanes being closed, so many people got stuck in the heat etc, it was horrible, I told myself after that NEVER AGAIN and got the fuck out of Houston
@dancergirl915 Very true. It's very difficult to evacuate when you only have a couple hundred bucks, live month to month with no vehicle. That encapsulates probably 80 percent of those who died in New Orleans.
Hey everybody, people could not evacuate because they did not know that is was going to dip, so when they woke up in the morning there was the hurricane a nd they could do nothing about it.
You ever try to evacuate along with 1 million other folks? I have. It isn't that easy. Several weeks after Katrina, Hurricane Rita was bearing down on Houston. EVERYONE left. The hurricane didn't hit, but still people died in the evacuation. Who failed then?
I do not know anyone who died in any storm, but my family and i HElped the people in Katria.i will use my space for letters....yyuyeolabxauiwxuebuaboxerucyucfucifcub yruyecyuyruyoryurueyuyeururyueqyruykeyuryukwyruouyyruyryueyruyueryoyquyeuyeuyvyryvyvvbyeruyqoqowuueyruyruyvuyvuyuyuryuvubvburwoquwyruyreueeuyywiwuyeuyriryerwuiyuvryuuvyoqyruoruueureioruryuyibuybyybeyrqeuyeuyryeryrueioqyryyuiwuvreoyvyeeuyoquyeqwyuyuitryiowyuytrytyutyutyutitytuytityytytytyyytytytytyyyyyytytyytytytyyowyyytuytyyyru7eievr

I used to live in pascagoula,MS when hurricain katrina hit I was at my gramps in forest MS but my house got flooded 4ft and my church did to because I lived by my church and I lived at least 1mile from the beach.or the coast of mississippi now I will use up all my space with numbers. 1234544444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222
Your point is taken but then again, I know how to deal with hurricanes far more than the avg person does. It was not me driving through malfunctioning traffic lights at full bore. Not me who died b/c a tree fell on my car. After about 20 hurricanes, you know how to do things without getting hurt- usually. Though, I do see your point. The irony is there but it is not like I am some schmoo who knows nothing about what he was up against.
I see your point but we who live in florida are so used to hurricanes it doesnt even phase us. I apologize for the moron comment, i retract it. But I assure you we know what we are doing. We deal with these storms constantly, we are annually assualted from 3 coasts every year. Category 1 Hurricanes are not a big deal to us.
crazycam is an idiot. Do some research before you open your mouth. Katrina struck Florida as a cat 1 hurricane and then made landfall in Mississippi. New Orleans was struck by the western edge of katrina. The levies failed and thats why all the damage. Direct landfall was made near Gulf Port. The damage in Mississippi was just as bad if not worse than that of New Orleans, the difference was the media coverage was concentrated on New Orleans and not Mississippi. Dumb Ass!

New Orleans is a wicked and evil city due to it's known Voodoo heritage. That's why Hurricane Katrina struck that city.
Rookerman32 1 year ago
THE Hurricane, because Katrina will always be THE to the ones who went through it was bad enough, but it only lasted hours. The aftermath, so often overlooked was part of went on for months and years. The cleanup, the totaling of losses, human and material is part of the whole package of misery. For us who survived was years of putting things back together and I think the Gulf Coast has done well. I would like to thank all the people and organizations who came to the coast and helped us!

I remember when my town was doing donations to the victims of this disaster. I end up donating about $1500, canned goods, water and clothes. I couldn’t donate as much money to Haiti but did so with lot of other things as well.

The hurricane that wiped out Galveston was a much bigger disaster. So was the Earthquake in San Francisco. I clicked stop after 10 seconds. Don't get your history lessons from CNN
ArtStone 1 year ago
@ArtStone but both of those happened a century ago more or less- katrina was a major disaster and in the top five for sure in our lifetimes! And considering it happened with engineer designed levees and all our technology and emergency response makes it even more tragic- plus the fact that Missisippi had damage as bad or even worse- Mt St Helens though was one of the most damaging ecological disasters in us history - time will tell with the oil spill!

Lol I love how everyone in south Florida is just going on with their average lifes driving around in a hurricane. Love it.
jeshpeter146 1 year ago
That's because we Floridians are so used to hurricanes, we don't fear category 1 hurricanes. Katrina was a minimal cat 1 hurricane over Florida. We don't worry about that kind of a storm. Only the media and the TV weathermen and women make it exciting and sensational. I remember I was at work that day and I drove home in the afternoon during the hurricane.
YesHeLives 1 year ago
its just becuase we have heard the hype so many times and nothing ever happens that when one does come in we just treat it as a big storm.

Weather Channel has a video on one such hurricane.
supergirl2025 2 years ago
@supergirl2025 I could never imagine a hurricane hitting New York haha. It just dosen't sound right. You always hear about them in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. But hardly ever in New York or anywhere on the northern eastcoast.

the intensely warm water and massive heat buildup from ground zero would also cause the hurricane to strengthen considerably more at that point , between the massive amount of water being sucked up into the air (think about it, how do hurricanes work in the first place?) and the fireball from ground zero detonation = really bad fuckin idea!!
SaturnOwner26 2 years ago
nucler weapon dropped or detonate air burst in the eye of a hurricane would spread radioactivity much farther much faster and would be very impractical, it would cause a much bigger problem than the hurricane itself, and no, it would not break apart the wind, laws of gravity + laws of physics, what happens when you create an outward blast with a shockwave on something that has perpetual motion and extreme power to begin with, think about it carefully, aside form that, govt wouldnt allow it
SaturnOwner26 2 years ago
if you people think New Orleans was bad, thats nothing, one of these days, a monster will hit Houston/Galveston mark my words, its not a matter of IF but When, and Galveston will go bye bye complete, Houstons gang population alone is almost as big as the entire population of new orleans, so you can imagine how much worse that will be. Needles to say, the National Guard will have their hands quite full having fun with that, and I know, I lived down there for a good long time, rode storms out etc
SaturnOwner26 2 years ago 2
natskivna I was there too during that giant clusterfuck they called an evacuation, and yes, people did die from it, I saw tanker trucks with fuel rolling down hwy 146 with miles and miles of traffic right next to them and lines of cars leading into gas station pumps running out of gas from idling for so long because of the outbound lanes being closed, so many people got stuck in the heat etc, it was horrible, I told myself after that NEVER AGAIN and got the fuck out of Houston

Omegax9000 1 year ago
@dancergirl915 Very true. It's very difficult to evacuate when you only have a couple hundred bucks, live month to month with no vehicle. That encapsulates probably 80 percent of those who died in New Orleans.

Omegax9000 1 year ago
Hey everybody, people could not evacuate because they did not know that is was going to dip, so when they woke up in the morning there was the hurricane a nd they could do nothing about it.
dancergirl915 2 years ago
you see something like that coming and you dont evacuate then you failed yourself and your family if the hurricane kills you
itzamia 2 years ago
You ever try to evacuate along with 1 million other folks? I have. It isn't that easy. Several weeks after Katrina, Hurricane Rita was bearing down on Houston. EVERYONE left. The hurricane didn't hit, but still people died in the evacuation. Who failed then?

Your point is taken but then again, I know how to deal with hurricanes far more than the avg person does. It was not me driving through malfunctioning traffic lights at full bore. Not me who died b/c a tree fell on my car. After about 20 hurricanes, you know how to do things without getting hurt- usually. Though, I do see your point. The irony is there but it is not like I am some schmoo who knows nothing about what he was up against.

I see your point but we who live in florida are so used to hurricanes it doesnt even phase us. I apologize for the moron comment, i retract it. But I assure you we know what we are doing. crazycam is an idiot. Dumb Ass!
