how does the new R1 compare in fuel economy to the others. i would expect it to be worse since its new firing order but i dont know just how much worse
@julingy buy a bike like this...and fuel consumption's the last thing you wanna think about, I'm more bothered about which suits my riding style better, so..ducati 1198s it is
when a bike runs out of gas, and the engine shuts off, don't you have to immediately pull in the clutch or else the bike will jerk and drop? i am just learning to ride bikes but i've never ran out of gas :), but i want to know what to expect and do in case it happens.
If your bike runs out of gas it will do essentially the same thing it does when your going a decent speed and you cut the throttle all the way closed while leaving the clutch out. and staying in the same gear. This is also known as engine braking.
Yes. What you're thinking of is when you down shift too many gears while moving and let out the clutch all the way. That IS a bad thing. You will either over rev the motor or lock the rear wheel or both. Quite often it is both.
thanks so much for your time, I took a motorcycle safety class about a month or two ago, coming after weaving around cones and shifted thinking I was cool and could get into neutral, and what do you know I wasn't cool enough and jerk, tip, bike goes down (was in 2nd before only 10MPH) and I went apeshit thinking I failed and instructor comes over and looks at it and says put your gear back on I didn't say you were out. :) But I passed 87 on test and now I am a member of the biker community ! :)
On my bike i have a reserve tank so if the bike runs out of gas i just pull over and change it to the reserve tank which is 1.1L, from there i can get to a petrol station to refill.
When are they going to bring out a diesel powered bike (and I don't mean that Enfield Bullet pile of junk)? If they can make a diesel car do 70MPG then a bike should easily do over 100 MPG. I know mopeds can do that but I'm not talking about them, I'm talking about something that can cruise comfortably at motorway speeds.
MCN a few weeks ago had a deseil powered bike, it was rated 2 out of 5 stars as the technology isn't quite up to teh standards of petrol yet, personally i'm not interested it them.
Hmmm...I get 82.2 MPG in my car, ok so it's a lot slower than a super bike! But still not bad for a car, i thought bikes were better on fuel than cars...stupid me.
If you compare your car to an economical bike like the cbf125 it gets 134MPG.
and you said you got 82.2mpg but over what terrain? if you reset trip at the top of a hill, and drove down slowly stopped and took a picture, then you could arrive at that easily, what you should do to make sure you got that, is do the full tank MPG check, thats the only way to make sure, as most dashboard MPG figures are way off
Yea i'm on FF too! i got 82 MPG over a 20 mile trip, both up hill and down hill, long straight stretches and tight twisty bits (live in Wales) From my calculations, the computer is around 2 to 3 MPG off, so 82 would be somewhere between 78 and 80 MPG.
22mpg for something that will out perform 99% of cars is awesome too. An Evo or Impreza would only do about 10mpg to put it in some kind of perspective
So about 55mpg? That's not great for only carrying one person. I got that out of a 2004 Fiat Punto. And it had two people in, was completely jammed full of luggage, and had a bike on a carrier on the back (to mess up the aerodynamics a bit). And it was on the road rather than a track too.
I thought he said it did 22.1miles on that gallon of fuel, but its flat out on a track at high speeds so it will use alot of fuel, but if you drove a punto like that it would use alot more fuel, its all about how you drive
well yeah there is that, all i was saying is that aat that sort of speed, any engine is going to use several times as much fuel, as normal driving speeds
The bike did 54.6 miles on a gallon at 60 mph (0:52), on a (presumably flat and traffic free) track. The 22.1 was at the higher speeds.
The punto wouldn't do so much over 100 mph, but the bike wouldn't have carried two people and all of the luggage, and it was more than fast enough for motorway driving.
My old school CBR600F with carbs gets around 45 mpg/highway, and it's 18 years old. When you look at the CC size to HP ratio, the gas mileage on bikes is amazing. If a car was built to the same specs you probley would only be getting 8-12mpg
Wasnt easyier to walk to the fuel canister...then to push the bike to it? ^^

high rev's make you consume more fuel.. fail

so it will just slow down as if i took my hand off the throttle? It won't jerk and tip over until I get to a slower speed?

Its nonsense like this reminds me why I stopped buying MCN.
I was watching this to see how to get more than 50MPG from my speed triple.
(Shut up, I already know the answer!)
We know the government are out to get at fast bikes, this isnt going to help the cause is it.

Pretty good milage, definatly more efficient than those shitty cars.
but with the weather like it is, i guess it's nicer to arrive warm and dry, plus your bike doesn't get caked in shit.
