@drew700boo The best way is to never let it get started...thoroughly wash the underside of the car, paying special attention to crevices where dirt, water and other things could be trapped. It also helps greatly to keep a car garaged.
Fixing it after the fact can be difficult and expensive.
Hmmm... well i knew that the star moved, but now theres a problem... there is no "keyhole" behind it there is just a round hole about the size of a quarter or bigger, and also i only have one key. i was given the car for free from someone i know that saved it from a salvageyard
@Jakep54903 I would, if I still had the red car. The first thing to do is to open the "star" medallion that covers the key hole. As you face the rear of the car, this should swing open, and I think it went to the driver's side. When that is done, insert the round-headed key. (Later cars, such as my station wagon, only have the one key.) Turn it and the trunk will pop open. Remove the key and the "star" should close.
@Matthew55904 It was worse than that. The car was still pretty sound, but the body metal was starting to pull in two in some very difficult places and there was the matter of the routing areas underneath for various lines rotting off as well.
@cmarshall1018 You certainly could have, but it's been gone for several months now. I didn't want to get rid of it so fast, but I was being harassed at the time by the city and it was having some problems that I couldn't justify spending the time or money to fix. Some of them were caused by severe rust.
man i LOVE that 1984 Plymouth reliant you have man if i ever get one i will get one with the 2.2l Chrysler motor those 2.6l Mitsubishi motors were horrible but this one i would trust since its only got 76 thousand miles but that goes to show you how badly the carburetors were on these....you having to already ajust it in under 80 thousand km...whatever i guess its normal since these carbs did have to be adjusted quit a bit......but i still wouldn't buy a 1981-1985 k-car with the 2.6l only a 2.2
Bill I have the problem of rusty floors and plan to fix mine, even if the cost was in excess of the cars value...too bad the floors are bad or else I'd buy it
@McVaio What year? I just got a white 1988 LeBaron Convertible. only payed $1000 for it but it lasted 2 weeks now have to have the bottom half of the engine rebuilt. :(
Unfortunately it turned out to be a lemon. Better be paying $5k for a perfect LeBaron than half that amount for a lemon. My GTS cost me 1k though and turned out to be technically in a mint condition. Well you can never know I guess...
@McVaio cool Back in 2003 i had a 1995 GTC and loved it till i wrecked it. now just glade to have another convertible. jut got to find out why the top in the 88 goes down perfectly fine but only goes up with help from me and dont latch easy.
Maybe your top shrunk, I replaced the top of my LeBaron in 2008. You can see my GTS at my account, it was still mint when I sold it, too bad I don't have it anymore. I still got that LeBaron though, I'm not giving up on that car =P And I've got a Mercury Grand Marquis now as a daily driver. Could you upload a vid of your LeBaron?
@McVaio guys I bought it from says the top is less the 5 yrs old. I'm pretty sure it's not the original one. cause I'm guessing with a white boot the original top was probably white too.... it's burgundy now so is the leather seats. It's an hour away from me now at a friends getting fixed. but all i have is a 2 mega pixel web cam but i could probably take my laptop out in the car when i get it fixed and make some video.
Burgundy could well be the original color for the top, I've seen them around with that color. Anyways, if the top is in a good condition it's probably been replaced indeed.
@McVaio ohh ok even though the boot top cover for when its down is white. hmm I hope to have the car back soon it's great on gas millage so it's great for my job as a pizza delivery driver :)
Yeah the boot covers always were painted in the body color. Mine is light pewter metallic while the top was dark pewter. I replaced the top with a black one though because dark pewter wasn't available anymore.
Get the wagon's underbody sprayed with oil before every winter to avoid the same fate of your red Reliant. I did it to my 92 Olds 2 weeks ago and it cost only 60$ CND or around 55$ American.
I saw a add in my local classified and i saw an add for 2 1988 dodge aries stationwagons. They both supposedly run. But the best part is it is 250 dollars for both. Do u think i should buy?
I'd strongly suggest that you look at both of them before paying anything. If they're in sound mechanical and reasonable body condition, it could be a good deal. At that price, however, I'd suspect that they may be very rusty, in need of major mechanical work, worn out or good only for parts.
Do your homework and look over both cars. Ask to see them running, look underneath and drive them if you can.
Thank you for the imformation. I am only 14 and I am just looking for something to work on for fun, but i wouldnt really want to buy junk. So i will probally call sometime this week and arrange to look at them both over the weekend.
go for it...iam only 14 and i have 5 GREAT running cars there not rusty either anyways yes just fully check out these 2 1988 aries and buy them if there any good hope they are
Bill, there's a guy whose channel is 'kcarman88'. Apparently there is a K Car club - so there may be an Illinois chapter of this club and so somebody there who'd be willing to buy your donor car.
I used to work with a guy had a relient k just like that. I was black and had only 60k, the only problem with it was the rust just like this one. It got so bad he couldnt drive it on the highway and he then junked it.
Don't you suppose that a 101 horsepower (on a very good day, wind behind it, going downhill, etc, etc) engine like this is a bit...big...for a go kart?
nice video! few years back my sister had an 87 chrysler lebaron. little car took the five of us to arizona and back. had the digital dash and everything. my dad kept it in shape until the timing belt broke and he passed away. so it ended up getting hauled off. now we have a little 1990 plymouth sundance with the 2.5 liter, 3-speed automatic. immaculate body, nice paint, everything works. got a tachometer on it which i like. gonna try to post a vid on it one day.
I like that dodge K-car you sould keep it just put metal plates in the floor there so the passenger dosent have to feel like the flinstones while your driving it
You should swap the chrome mirrors from the sedan to the wagon. I'm glad to see your saving and selling parts instead of just sending the Red Rocket to the crusher. Keep up the good work.
No, I do not want to give it away. I will surely use it in another car. If you're that desperate for a stereo, maybe you should go to some garage sales. You might find something there for a few bucks at most. It might not be ultra high fidelity (but neither is this one) and the odds of it working fine are decent.
The head gasket is a gasket between the cylinder head and the engine block that seals many coolant and oil passages and seals the cylinders to keep the combustion from getting into the cooling systems, those Chrysler 2.5's were very bad about the head gasket rotting away and developing a very bad oil leek.
Next door neighbor says that the problems most of them had were due to overheating. I could believe that this wagon probably was overheated by its previous owners.
thanks for the info. and just in case, i wasnt implying that these cars are bad. youtube is messing up the response order on the comments. good cars these are
It can happen. Many gaskets get a little loose by sitting and some driving around will "cure" them back up into sealing again. That can go on for quite a while before you have to replace them.
I don't see this as being such a problem for gaskets that are kept under constant positive pressure as a head gasket would be.
how do you prevent body rot on a car?
