ushadrons - I accidently hit the spam button, my bad. I was trying to reply to your post. I have a question....how do we apply the laws of the United States against citizens of another country? Those 'laws' are DOMESTIC, not international. Furthermore, these people that were caught and 'tortured' for information are enemy combatants of the United States. If your so uptight about the laws, then why don't you live up to YOUR standards by living by them. I believe you would have a very hard time.
Oh my U-tube, you're still censoring huh? Do you have U-tube police working overtime and you've got certain people you gotta delete their comments on? Is that how it works for the cyber police?
Torture must be expected everyone every country does it UK, France, and Germany . I rather have a tourted terroist than hundreds of dead civilians.I support Obama and want the best for our country but sometimes we can't always play the "good guys"
Mwhahahahahahahaha!!!! You don't think dead civilians is on the agenda? Maybe you should rethink things and dig a little deeper. Did you see the videos about Northcom troups coming into the US? What about the youth service Obama is implementing? Does Hitler's Youth ring a bell? Ever hear of the New World Order? In case you don't know it, 911 was the kick off date for the world-wide police state.
The law is the law. The law does not care about parties. The Attorney General must follow his job description, investigate and prosecute where crimes are found. The congress must follow it's job description and do the same. We must affirm to ouselves and show the rest of the world we are a nation of laws.
.......stupid or nuts. You compared Bush with his pontential trial with Charles Manson. Really, are you being serious? Are you and Mychaels family or something?
You people need to realize and accept when your in the wrong. Live up to president Obama's idea that Americans should live within their bounds.

No I think the importance here is to prove to the American public that no one is above the law. Of course there will be profit. Does that mean that the guilty should walk away free>?
I guess this is the real life version of The Dark Night. Batman runs around beating up criminals and going around the law to save the city. In the end though, the city hates him for it. Bush, according to people who don't understand the law, broke the law to save Americans. These people ARE NOT US citizens. How to apply domestic laws against international citizens???? Shouldn't the UN prosecute the Bush administration then?
We are also talking about the Iraq war. Millions of Iraqis have died needlessly because of Bush. Warrentless wiretapping, Taking Americans off the streets and stripping them of their rights are also in hear. They did not protect Americans. If you have noticed more people hate us now than before Bush. Why are you not concerned about this? Are you related to Bush or Cheney?
Bush is responsible for killing Iraqi's huh. What about the suicide bombers who kill themselves along with 25 other Iraqi's every single day for ABSOLUTLY no reason. We are atleast fighting an enemy who has attacked us. Im not saying that its right for innocent civilians to die but at the same hand, war is not pretty. You have to understand this. If you want to really understand something i can send you a video that might make you feel different towards everything.
They never attacked us. My God that has been proven over and over again. And you say that killing a million Iraqs is OK? You are no better than an animal. Suicide bombers protecting their own against us? Primitive right. How do you justify our soldiers being told to shoot children? No I do not blame the soldiers. You on the other hand are Anti American for thinking this slaughter is acceptable.
wait a second, did you read my post? I said that it is NOT right to kill innocent civilians. The thing is, we are not targeting innocent civilians here. As far as targeting children - American police officers have paper targets with kids holding pistols pointing back at the officers. The police are trained to shoot at children. Children are taught to use weapons..you do know that Africans are teaching children to be soldiers. What do you say about that?
Futhermore, never again call me anti-american. I currently have an aviation contract with the marine corps...please tell me whats more patriotic than that? Also, i don't know anyone who would say "yes! blow me up in order to protect me!" Also, I never said Iraqi's attacked us...in a few posts before I even said that the terrorists came from Saudi Arabia. What I am saying is this - insurgents are attacking US troops. You can't deny that. If you think that what we are doing in Iraq is wrong
i am not saying the guilty should walk free, but people have to take into the account the circumstances that surrond the issues at hand. We are not fighting a conventional war at all and limiting ourselves only hurts our progress. Yet again, I am not implying we should kill everything that moves but certain actions MUST be taken. People say Iraq was wrong because the terrorists came from Saudi Arabia...now think about this, Obama bowed to the Saudi King whose country produced the terrorists.
since ford pardoned nixon.. all presidents have fergotten they are sworn in to protect the constitution.. and they think, they will get away with their scandals and crimes..
The constitution applies to US citizens...nobody else. Does Germany's law of manditory military service apply to the French? The consitution protects American rights, nobody elses. The same as Germany's, Russia's and all the other countries. Should France's president be kicked out of officer because of his recent love affair? That was a scandel. he should be kicked out because if he could lie to his wife about sleeping with someone else, he can lie to his country. For a lot less.
Well I see there is a mighty troll here attacking anyone who begs to differ with his opinion. But who cares. I think the only people who should be prosecuted are those that authorized the torture, ie Toady Gonzalez, Cheney, and that Chinese lawyer.
the enemy ("democrat") is engaging in a tactic of building, so when it needs repair or crumbles they can say vote for me..... aka in the catch phrase world of criminals....."change" or...change we can believe in.....they all deserve to die. maybe if we are lucky someone will blow up congress with all of them inside.....and barracade the white house.....pull hussein out and drag him to the gallows. the us military shall aid.
What do we do about climate change? Well we don't sink more money into a finite resource (oil). We stop worrying about India and China, and make ourselves the nation that monopolizes green technology. Then we make it more affordable. We manufacture it here, and give our old factory towns new life.
We don't take a defeatist tone, because that's unpatriotic. We become a nation of do-ers not watchers & take the cutting edge because we can.
America needs to be a leader not a follower. Just because the worst of the world does something, doesn't mean we are hurting ourselves by not doing it.
This is the stance we should take on torture, climate change, criminal justice and whole host of other issues that will put America back on the cutting edge. We do not have to follow the pack, even if it means the rest of world lags far behind.
How would war crime fit into this speech? We need to admit that we've made some war crimes? seriously this speech was to get the CIA to raise spirits and show them there is another way. So he speaks in positive terms. Its the art of rhetoric. How much do you want to be that everyone in that room knew that these mistakes= war crimes. Stop with the ticky tack shit
"ticky tack shit " is exactly what obama did... but when someone else does it, it`s desturbing to you:-)
i have to admit: he is an expert in "the art of rhetoric" and it might be a step forward, that he is basicly saying " we don`t torture anymore"... anyway, i don`t trust him!
Yeah right america is the best country of all countries well thats a load of self centered bull how ignorant of any country to think there the bizness over all others come you yanks have the most social problems the most serial killers the most terrible benefit & health system and your all loud and obnocious and think your the best while being lead round the world like sheep to kill other creeds who have not even step on your soil what goes around comes around america and you been going around
Christ he's laying it on pretty thick there. I'm all for Obama and all, but jeez that's a whole new level of corniness.
He's got some balls (or neck!) though. Can you imagine giving that speech to a room of hardened CIA operatives - "its hard guys" (quivers) "I believe in you" (holding back the tears) "thats what makes you such great Americans."
Im not hating on him, just pisses me off the way all the pantomime is required 24/7.
I think Obama is afraid to stand up to the CIA because they are more powerful than him. They can sabotage him and his policies, they can do anything they want with immunity.
I like Obama, but when he says that not torturing might make CIA's job easier it sounds weird, because it implies that torturing makes it easier. If its unreliable, then why say it like that? I think the honest truth they are not willing to admit is that in some cases torture probably works, but that they should only resort to it in such extreme circumstances that it puts the torturer in jail where only a presidential pardon can free them - meaning it really MUST be a rare and dire circumstance
I hear that if a man doesn't crack from waterboarding, that you can bring out his eldest son and kill him while the father watches. Apparently they crack like an egg at that point. Why don't we use that technique?
Oh, and ramming screws underneath fingernails. Why does Obama want to restrict these necessary techniques and make america unsafe?
we used them because we HOPED they would work. According to various reports they were largely fruitless. And in the cases where they did work the information they provided was either misleading or not very valuable.
But there is always a chance that in case of last resort and imminent danger that they would. There is that instinct.
In either case, if the damage to US image doing interrogations outweighs the benefits that the extracted information provides, it is prudent to end the practice.
Torture probably works in some cases, but that's not to say that other techniques would not have worked in those same cases. So torture would be the equavalent of a get-rich-quick scheme, that may or may not work..(works in some cases)..as opposed to other more diplomatic methods of interogation, that also produce results, without breaking the law.
I think Obama has to do what he thinks will work, and he'll be judged on that.
No, i don't equate torture with making money. Get-rich-quick sheme, or quick fix diet, get the point? Like an easy short term solution that may not be beneficial over the long run.
I think historians are more likely to look at the late 20th century/early 21st as the "era of lust for oil" overriding anything else and who is truly on "the better side" of history
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I kind of feel sorry for Obama, I don't think he knows he's being used as the scape goat ,he really believes he was ELECTED much like the previous Presidents, I truly believe that the last true ELECTED president was JFK,, all since have been selected by whomever it is ruining this country, their are those who curse the Democrats, and those who curse Republicans, but in truth they're all just puppets for those truly in charge, and it's sad this was a great Country and it's been stolen by theives
All you Obama bashers need to get over it and move on. We had to suffer thru 8 years of Bush it's going to take more that 100 to clean up this mess, you can continue to be part of the problem or part of the solution. What's it gonna be...?
Did you not notice only 2 choices this time? You think that was real?
Did McClain's run for President seem like a serious attempt to you? Did you know that, Registration for the draft has been tied to -- New Voter registration - Starting to make some sense now, ?
They are planning a big war and Obama is key to the plan for sure.
I wish you were correct in your well wishing. However the reality of truth is quite contrary to that.
I don't think those two are "tied together" but even if they were, big deal. If you want to have the right to vote in this republic you should be willing to defend it through selective service.
Guess what? They ask people if they want to register to vote whenever they go to the DMV! That must mean if you want to get a license, you are going to be forced to go to war! OH NO!
Big deal ! Big deal? Ok . How many young people, do you think would have registered to vote if Obama had not ran. See. This thing is, way larger than simply the U.S. .. A man posted a great video about what's going on just days ago. At the end he states that if we fight WWIII for the current powers that be. The result will be the END of FREEDOM WORLD WIDE. That's how big the big picture is.
You buy into the whole alarmist bullshit too much and as a result end up using the same fear-mongering tactics. What are your sources, other than some guy's opinion?
Things are not perfect in the world by any means, but I see the state of the world much differently than you. I would agree that another war of any sort is unacceptable. I could also see a war with Iran widening very quickly and spiraling out of control. However, our foreign policy is improving in that regard.
For far, far too long the CIA has been able to assassinate democratically elected leaders, train operatives of dictators how to "effectively torture," participate in incredibly inhumane experiments, collaborate with organized criminal syndicates, propagandize foreign countries, disrupt peaceful civil protest, spy on civilians, kidnap civilians, torture innocent people, help install despotic governments, violate virtually every law; and they always get away with it all.
While I respect the sentiment - I personally think it's just your idealized notion of Kennedy that you are looking back on as a "real" President. He didn't live long enough to fuck up into a second term.
Back then people respected the office of the President, and the "loyal opposition' was actually loyal. They weren't a bunch of blowhards whining and bloviating and nitpicking every word and gesture trying to discredit the President for the sake of political gain.
Perhaps if you checked your cynicism at the door - you might give this president the chance to be the next Kennedy.
And don't tell me that Obama would have surrendered to Kruschev.
Because if Kennedy lived in our political day and age, the GOP would have lambasted him for even TALKING to Krushev. Nothing short of dropping A-bombs all over Moscow would have sated the militant Right's blood lust.
Wrong? It's wrong to say that torture is inhumane, and we as a people, do not and will not support it? Are you kidding me? Can you please provide ONE instance where torture was proven more effective than all other forms of interrogation? Sad to say, but it is YOU who are wrong and willing to give up your own values so you can have a false sense of security. Torturing people does not make you safer and even if it did, that would still not be an excuse to do it. It's inhumane in every way.
Furthermore, look back in history and you will see the failure of torture. The Inquisition, the Salem witch trials, are 2 prominent examples amongst a myriad of thousands of instances throughout history which demonstrate torture is not effective; it does not produce accurate confessions because people will say anything to make the pain cease. It breaks my heart that there are many people like you that are willing to throw humanity out the door so you can have "peace of mind," it's disgusting.
toosin was saying Obama is wrong for not prosecuting Bush and CIA officials for torture.
His comment doesn't really fit here because of Obama's word on this particular video, but I've read his comments on multiple videos regarding torture. Just scroll up to see another one. You two agree on this subject, as do I.
I think it would be strange for someone to say that NOT torturing prisoners would break their heart, don't you?
History & Science prove the only legitimate information does not come from torture; In fact, an al Qaeda member confessed to al-Qaeda's Deputy Operations Chief Ayman al-Zawahiri location specifically because his captors were decent & fair
Moreover, heads of DOD make case people joined against America simply because of their indecent atrocities at Gitmo; and, that just as many Americans have died as a direct result of those atrocities at Gitmo as have died in the WTC towers!
the boogeymen. every society has a boogeymen, govts need boogeymen to be in power. if there arent any enemies what will happen to the arms industry? oh boy we cant let the arms industry godown the tubes. that will fuck up the economy. which is fake anyway !!lol!!

the enemy ("democrat") is engaging in a tactic of building, so when it needs repair or crumbles they can say vote for me..... aka in the catch phrase world of criminals....."change" or...change we can believe in.....they all deserve to die. maybe if we are lucky someone will blow up congress with all of them inside.....and barracade the white house.....pull hussein out and drag him to the gallows. the us military shall aid.

It's Obama's message all the same.
route99 2 years ago
we can but we need to shed assumptions.

"Then we make it more affordable."
route99, Would you mind explaining that?
MooseOfReason 2 years ago
America needs to be a leader not a follower. Just because the worst of the world does something, doesn't mean we are hurting ourselves by not doing it.
This is the stance we should take on torture, climate change, criminal justice and whole host of other issues that will put America back on the cutting edge. We do not have to follow the pack, even if it means the rest of world lags far behind.
route99 2 years ago
he just called torture a "mistake".. not a war-crime!!
so milosevic/nazis did some mistakes, right??!! :-)
and "the better side of history" means they will get away with it...
thank you for the "moral leadership" :-)
when ppl start twisting the truth or calling things like.. black is white or 2+2=5 don`t trust them
log140 2 years ago
How would war crime fit into this speech? We need to admit that we've made some war crimes? seriously this speech was to get the CIA to raise spirits and show them there is another way. So he speaks in positive terms. Its the art of rhetoric. How much do you want to be that everyone in that room knew that these mistakes= war crimes. Stop with the ticky tack shit
crtnyevans 2 years ago

This is not the change I voted for.
chumashfalcon 2 years ago
I like Obama, but when he says that not torturing might make CIA's job easier it sounds weird, because it implies that torturing makes it easier. If its unreliable, then why say it like that? I think the honest truth they are not willing to admit is that in some cases torture probably works, but that they should only resort to it in such extreme circumstances that it puts the torturer in jail where only a presidential pardon can free them - meaning it really MUST be a rare and dire circumstance
vdizhoor 2 years ago
If these interrogation techniques are so unreliable, why did we use them?
Because they worked. Sure, not 100% - nothing works ALL the time - but it did work.
What will work now that we don't do those things anymore?
TedinLasVegas 2 years ago
I hear that if a man doesn't crack from waterboarding, that you can bring out his eldest son and kill him while the father watches. Apparently they crack like an egg at that point. Why don't we use that technique?
Oh, and ramming screws underneath fingernails. Why does Obama want to restrict these necessary techniques and make america unsafe?
MarkG45 2 years ago 2
we used them because we HOPED they would work. According to various reports they were largely fruitless. And in the cases where they did work the information they provided was either misleading or not very valuable.
But there is always a chance that in case of last resort and imminent danger that they would. There is that instinct.
In either case, if the damage to US image doing interrogations outweighs the benefits that the extracted information provides, it is prudent to end the practice.
vdizhoor 2 years ago
Torture probably works in some cases, but that's not to say that other techniques would not have worked in those same cases. So torture would be the equavalent of a get-rich-quick scheme, that may or may not work..(works in some cases)..as opposed to other more diplomatic methods of interogation, that also produce results, without breaking the law.
I think Obama has to do what he thinks will work, and he'll be judged on that.
ver506 2 years ago
You equate torture with making money?
minteko 2 years ago
No, i don't equate torture with making money. Get-rich-quick sheme, or quick fix diet, get the point? Like an easy short term solution that may not be beneficial over the long run.
ver506 2 years ago
I think historians are more likely to look at the late 20th century/early 21st as the "era of lust for oil" overriding anything else and who is truly on "the better side" of history

MathewsWire 2 years ago
MatthewsWire:
I don't think those two are "tied together" but even if they were, big deal. If you want to have the right to vote in this republic you should be willing to defend it through selective service.
Guess what? They ask people if they want to register to vote whenever they go to the DMV! That must mean if you want to get a license, you are going to be forced to go to war! OH NO!
MrMan428 2 years ago
Big deal ! Big deal?
MathewsWire 2 years ago
You buy into the whole alarmist bullshit too much and as a result end up using the same fear-mongering tactics. What are your sources, other than some guy's opinion?
Things are not perfect in the world by any means, but I see the state of the world much differently than you. I would agree that another war of any sort is unacceptable. I could also see a war with Iran widening very quickly and spiraling out of control. However, our foreign policy is improving in that regard.
WWIII? Not yet.
MrMan428 2 years ago
For far, far too long the CIA has been able to assassinate democratically elected leaders, train operatives of dictators how to "effectively torture," participate in incredibly inhumane experiments, collaborate with organized criminal syndicates, propagandize foreign countries, disrupt peaceful civil protest, spy on civilians, kidnap civilians, torture innocent people, help install despotic governments, violate virtually every law; and they always get away with it all.

you're retarded, Kennedy was shit
WKaliberr 2 years ago
While I respect the sentiment - I personally think it's just your idealized notion of Kennedy that you are looking back on as a "real" President. He didn't live long enough to fuck up into a second term.
Back then people respected the office of the President, and the "loyal opposition' was actually loyal. They weren't a bunch of blowhards whining and bloviating and nitpicking every word and gesture trying to discredit the President for the sake of political gain.
mikepalomino 2 years ago 2
Perhaps if you checked your cynicism at the door - you might give this president the chance to be the next Kennedy.
And don't tell me that Obama would have surrendered to Kruschev.
Because if Kennedy lived in our political day and age, the GOP would have lambasted him for even TALKING to Krushev. Nothing short of dropping A-bombs all over Moscow would have sated the militant Right's blood lust.

toosinbeymen 2 years ago
It's inhumane in every way.
eros1057 2 years ago 3
Furthermore, look back in history and you will see the failure of torture. The Inquisition, the Salem witch trials, are 2 prominent examples amongst a myriad of thousands of instances throughout history which demonstrate torture is not effective; it does not produce accurate confessions because people will say anything to make the pain cease. It breaks my heart that there are many people like you that are willing to throw humanity out the door so you can have "peace of mind," it's disgusting.
eros1057 2 years ago 4

toosin was saying Obama is wrong for not prosecuting Bush and CIA officials for torture.
MrMan428 2 years ago
Bush said same!

What made the US special is that we didn't torture. If Pres Obama lets torturers get away with it, we're done being special.
No amount of speechifying by Pres Obama will change that.
It's not a mistake to torture, it's a crime and perpetrators MUST be prosecuted.
