Wow. Parenti loves to make facts up to suit his own interests. The Prime Minister that Saddam attempted to assassinate (Abd al-Karim Qasim) was not democratically elected. He overthrew the existing monarchy and replaced the prime minister. He ordered the deaths of the Royal Family and the two prior Prime Ministers.

Qasim was overthrown by the Ba'ath party which eventually lead to Saddam taking power in 1979.

Iraq did not have a democracy until today.

Who is the mind between the left and right wings of the eagle? Who are the referees or team owners watching their football teams play? Right and Left are not obsolete terms, it's just that there is no left. The economic order (capitalism) creates the political order - so everybody moves to the right, promoting free trade capitalism. See democrats in US, Blair's New Labour and the social democratic parties of Europe. Left is still relevant, but it's not acknowledged as a mainstream option.

Right and Left are obsolete terms. The only thing I can't agree with him on is that the Democrats don't know what they're doing. He even says it about the Ronald Reagan and Bush Jr: they only ACT stupid so you ignore what they're ACTUALLY DOING (I'm paraphrasing). The first part of this video is great, but the last part is nothing but right vs. left, Republican vs. Democrat nonsense. Like either party is really serving the people anymore. Notice he never mentioned when discussing Vietnam that it was started and scaled up when the Democrats had the White House. Korean War happened when the Democrats had the White House.

yeah, chomsky has a much better handle on that issue calling the parties, two factions of a single entity. chomsky also recognizes that imperialism does not operate via free markets even if empire likes to call them that, but that they are better described by the name 'state capitalism'. i'm also not too partial on the idea that labor unions can ever offer anything other than the illusion of autonomy. burn down the fucking factory and grow your own food, then and only then do you have autonomy.

Michael Parenti is a brilliant, passionate speaker who is deeply perceptive and tells it like it is. Listening to him I strongly get the sense that he takes the positions he does because he cares about people. His speeches are worth hearing more than once, so as to better retain their excellent content.
