True, an advertisement definitely aims to manipulate people into buying products these days. Visual and subconscious manipulation. Just think about the car commercials, it's like they're all mini action movies now. Liquor commercials with the liquor slowly pouring out of the bottle, and the light reflecting off of it just perfect. The narrations with voices of people who sound "experienced" subconsciously gaining your trust, and so on...

I think the only point I disagree on is music licensing for advertising. While some things never made sense because they were poorly paired (Zeppelin licensing for the first time for a Cadillac commercial), licensing pays musicians pretty well. It's getting insanely hard to make any money in the music industry these days unless you're the sensation of the week. If you can find a brand willing to pay you for your music that works well with YOUR image as a musician, I think it's perfectly fine to.

Yeah, I went through this kind of rage at modern society and advertising last year in Lit. & Modern Media class. It's fairly sick the methods advertisers use to not only get people to buy their products but also to sculpt young people's minds as a person and consumer. There's a series of documentary videos somewhere on YouTube (if they're still up) that explains it all.

I can't handle commercials on tv. I basically don't watch t.v. because of commercials. The advertisements on youtube are, while, I guess, good for the content creators it is also turning me off if this too. I got no problem with people making a buck but I hate that the introduction of monetary profit usually means the watering down of the genre. Try watching an Australian TV show called "The Gruen Transfer". It examines the many aspects of advertising in a satirical and thought provoking way. I now live overseas where I can't read advertising (different language) and I don't own a TV. Thats one way to escape it - although to be honest, I kinda miss it sometimes. Humans are programmed to want new things and experiences. Ads let us know about new things.
Excessive advertising is horrible, but that doesn't stop it from paying the bills. It can be a very lucrative business and for that reason, I don't see this problem going away.
My biggest problem with advertising is that they give me very little choice. I would love a setting on every website to just disable the ads. Or, at the very least, not inhibit me for blocking the ads. As some commentators have mentioned, certain sites will not allow you to watch their videos if you block the ads.
Most of all, I hate this about consumerism: we're all expected to purchase our identity. You can't just Be, you have to BUY clever. Buy mysterious, buy sexy. BULLSHIT.
My main problem is how condescending it all is. Do they really think I don't see through their tragic lines? "This will make you sexy! Or rich! Or a more competent housewife!" It's all so insultingly blatant. Doesn't stop it working, sadly.

I like you. You are adequately intelligent. But in this video you come across as a little bit naive. It's a natural part of the human psyche to filter what we costume mentally anyway. For instance most if not all people know it's not healthy to smoke but they continue to smoke because they filter out the negatives and only concentrate on the positives. Even if advertisements were completely impartial we wouldn't necessarily not buy that product if the positives outweighed the negatives.
Although you could say it's a necessary evil. Advertising funds a lot of creative products e.g. television programmes that wouldn't have been made otherwise. It's sad but what's the alternative?

I know advertising funds a lot of things but I dislike it so much. Luckily I have a great little browser plugin that blocks almost all of it online cause I installed it when I wasn't in the mood to see advertising.

I can't handle commercials on tv. I basically don't watch t.v. because of commercials. The advertisements on youtube are, while, I guess, good for the content creators it is also turning me off if this too. I got no problem with people making a buck but I hate that the introduction of monetary profit usually means the watering down of the genre. They find the people with the most mass appeal and put them out there as something they're not. Like that Ray William Jonhson douche.

Try watching an Australian TV show called "The Gruen Transfer". It examines the many aspects of advertising in a satirical and thought provoking way. I now live overseas where I can't read advertising (different language) and I don't own a TV. Thats one way to escape it - although to be honest, I kinda miss it sometimes. Humans are programmed to want new things and experiences. Ads let us know about new things.

Excessive advertising is horrible, but that doesn't stop it from paying the bills. It can be a very lucrative business and for that reason, I don't see this problem going away.
My biggest problem with advertising is that they give me very little choice. I would love a setting on every website to just disable the ads. Or, at the very least, not inhibit me for blocking the ads. As some commentators have mentioned, certain sites will not allow you to watch their videos if you block the ads.

My main problem is how condescending it all is. Do they really think I don't see through their tragic lines? "This will make you sexy! Or rich! Or a more competent housewife!" It's all so insultingly blatant. Doesn't stop it working, sadly.
The main exceptions are baffling fragrance ads, which make bugger-all sense. Just tell me what it freakin smells like, you pretentious douches.

I agree boh3m3; advertising has run rampant. The problem is, how are we supposed to pay for all this stuff without it. Would ANYONE really pay to use Youtube? Or listen to FM radio? Can you imagine a world where EVERY little thing had a monthly subscription? I can, and it sounds pretty horrible. I don't have the answer, but I think we could combine less ads with small payments. 3 Tier option kinda thing, no ads, less ads, lots of ads, dependent on fee. Problem is, no ads would be A LOT.

I like you. You are adequately intelligent. But in this video you come across as a little bit naive. It's a natural part of the human psyche to filter what we costume mentally anyway. For instance most if not all people know it's not healthy to smoke but they continue to smoke because they filter out the negatives and only concentrate on the positives. Even if advertisements were completely impartial we wouldn't necessarily not buy that product if the positives outweighed the negatives.

Find a gap in the market to come up with some product that consumers don't even know they need or want or in the case of Apple take someone elses idea and stick a led light on it on and make it white and people will go nuts for it
