Comedy and humor is not a science, it is a taste. What is funny in Britain may not be as funny in the US. Our life experienced (from childhood, as an adult) gives us an individual framework of what WE may think is funny. What is funny to one person may not be funny to someone else. Obviously you know the name Chevy Chase for a reason, and it has nothing to do with Maryland. Chase would have to be a talented and funny person to a lot of people for you to even know his name. Give him a break.

When SNL was a hit, suddenly Chevy was a total egomaniac - they'd be nothing without me, I don't need them, etc - the SNL cast would go to parties, and Chevy'd set himself up like a rajah holding court. Then, of course, the Second City folks'd come in, and not fall for any of that. John Candy used to jump him and put him in a headlock until Chevy would admit he was a jerk.

At Chevy's height, he created some funny moments. Even then, he was never a genius. I suggest if you want to use that term in the world of comedy, you look towards Andy Kaufman and Bill Hicks.
