  • como tiene la embocaduta del clarinete???? madre mia y que bien toca

  • Emma, you play excellent. You have wonderful tone quality. I'd love to hear you play in person some day. I play the Clarinet myself. It's a beautiful instrument to play. It brings joy to anyone who plays it. Thank you Emma.

  • I don't really like her tone, too much air.

  • I well recall seeing her perform in The Young Musician. I didn't bother with any of the other heats, just tuned in to the final to see what she played to take the title.

  • You guys are sad for arguing bout spelling :P

  • I don't like the her tone. I think julian bliss's tone is better, but she's good too.

  • I don't like her tone I don't like Julian Bliss's tone either. Walter Boyekens,Håkan Rosengren and George Pieterson are more my cup of tea :) Also Michael Han Kim is much more promising at age 13 than Julian was at that time and plays with much better control.

  • ... Everybody should take this into account... Anger takes over us and we say some things we may regret, understand this please... Hatred is such a harsh emotion... =| =] I may be a hypocrit at times but at least I realise... I don't want people hating each other, it's painful... I'm not saying you HAVE to like them, just don't be so harsh... It's hard to do I know, I fail at this but I'm learning =] xx

  • Also he is being a doosh. I just read the whole argument and I'm on EshnaHere's side. Even though I have just started learning the clarinet this is the first song I learnt (just not this version) and I think that who is better or worse is just a matter of opinion. Different people like different things so you can't make a judgements like that. You shouldn't be mad at anyone just because they have a different view than you. And this isn't just aimed at phillipmccrevis... (more)

  • You're arguing over a spelling... =|

  • He started it. :P

  • Don't call me that. by the way. Here in England we spell it like that... I don't care how you spell it, so just DROP IT!

  • phillipmccrevis, don't move here, if your only in a community band you won't be good enough to even contemplate playing on these shores

  • Well, it appears that the worst clarinetist from a small town in the USA is much better than the best England has to offer. Don't be offended by the truth, sir. Just sit back and take it in. This is the beginning of understanding.

  • I was talking to Cornodebassetto, you dim-witted hack!!

  • stfu

  • That is such a snobby thing to say. I think that is really mean. I can also play this piece but I wouldn't make judgements like that

  • People who don't make judgments are morons. Kind of like the people who spell judgments with an "e".

I'm talking about you, you hypocrite. You make a judgment about me for making a judgment about someone's terrible clarinet playing?

  • Oh shut up! Your so stuck up! even is emma johnson isn't a great clarinet player, you shouldn't say things like that. Anyway I don't think I want you to come to England if you did become a musician here, I would NEVER buy tickets to your concerts. I hope nobody else would. You are just being immature.

  • That IS how you spell Judgements... Lokk it up in a dictionary you dingbat.

  • What do I say to that? So, your response to my correction of your spelling is to insist that you spelled the word right?!? How about YOU go look it up, sir.

Any way you stir it, those clarinet players on that side of the pond are dreadful.

  • Excuse me, have you ever read the oxford ENGLISH DICTIONARY? You Americans may spell it like that, but HERE well spell it differently.

  • You're wrong.

  • The English don't spell it like that. I'm right.

  • Lol OMG really? no one cares xD and what r u cocky about u sound like a stoner lolllol

  • Haha, it's almost like she doesn't even notice that she has a clarinet in her mouth. She's so relaxed and in control and thinks more of the music she plays rather than the clarinet itself.

    Good stuff.

  • What I like about her playing is that she looks in control, but also completely at ease and relaxed with what she is doing. Charming looks and personality as well.

I'm a classical musician too, but you music boffs always look for an excuse to criticise something. For crying out loud, no one is perfect.

  • I don't know why this video is displaying strangely. It was fine when I first uploaded it. It seems to display fine if you download it and play it in RealPlayer too.

  • I haven't heard anyone play as beautifully as this since hearing Gervase de Peyer. She has the technical skills to play most anything she wants. She has the musical skills to draw us into her playing and deep into the music she's performing. She has a soft, subtle way of playing that is thrilling. Great work on the 'Voi Che Sapete'.

I agree about the intrusive voiceovers and about the 'narrow' distortion of the image - perhaps some artifact of resizing.

  • not a fan of the tone

  • me neither

  • yeah sounds not very warm and sounds like a little airy and thin

  • WOW! I love you Emma

  • What the hell is wrong with this video? Everything is so narrow!

  • her staccato is far too english for my tastes, however she is mediocre in her respects though I am an absolutly an envowed follower of Sharon Kam.

  • I don't like the tone. Too...flabby.

  • I love Voi che sapete! I remember playing it for Grade 4.

For some reason my teacher doesn't like Emma Johnson... but I don't think I know enough about the clarinet to pass judgement.

HOWEVER! I do like the way she plays here.

  • Veramente una bella clarinettista.

    ciao ciao

  • Emma Johnson ROCKS!

    great!

  • i just discovered Emma when looking at the library for good recordings of Weber's first clarinet concerto and her's stuck out as being just how i hear it in my head...she has just beautiful tone and can play any piece her own individual way.

  • i play clarinet and flute. ur awesome!

  • check out Eleanor Connor see what you think she is only 12

  • I don't like her style: I prefer more the sound of Austrian or German clarinetists, like Sabine Meyer, Ernst Ottensamer, Peter Schmidl, Alfred Prinz...

  • i agree w/Alfred Prinz.

    the music is brilliant

  • my teacher doesn't like her style- bit over sentimental & english style stuccato

  • YOU ROCK!!! I don't play clarinet but i love them. Where could i get this piece for soprano or tenor sax

  • i've played the clarinet for 5 years and i really want to go become a musician and play in an orchestra or be like emma! SHE IS SO GOOD!

  • I've played the clarinet for one month and i keep squeaking. I pale GREATLY in comparison with Emma Johnson (duh XD). Her playing's so beautiful!

  • Don't feel badly, I've played the clarinet for almost ten years, I still squeak occasionally, and I also pale greatly in comparison with Emma Johnson, lol.

  • my daughter katie plays the claranet she is now doing her grade 2

  • i play the clarinet! Im kinda a begginer but still!!!!!

  • i play the clarinet!! :) i want to be a musicican when im older! its my dream!

  • Is it Crusell's Clarinet Concerto No.2 Op.5 that she played for the BBC Young Musician of the Year. If so which movement, because i play this peice and i cant find the extract used in the documentary; it's so beautiful.

  • fwap fwap

  • Emma plays Voi che sapete heavenly!

  • haha ive played clarinet since 4th grade!!!!!!

  • that was beautiful, she's really good

  • I Also Played The Clarinet Too.I First Started Playing The Clarinet When I Was In 6th Grade. I Was Tought By Mr. Edward Queja

  • wow im called Emma Johnson!! aprt frm i play flute not clarenet!

  • Who gave her less than a 4. What is wrong with you :@

  • I remember her winning "Young Musician of the Year" in 1984. She blew everyone away (excuse the pun!) - and I've been a fan ever since!

  • How to kill the voiceover? Like stones in your soup or

    sugar in your wine.

  • Emma Johnson and Sabine Meyer play so differently, I don't think that one is much better than the other. Overall, I think Emma Johnson's style is a little more understated and a less attention demanding that Sabine Meyer's, but Sabine Meyer's clear sound is unmatchable.

  • Sabine Meyer is a lot better IMO. Listen to Emma's Mozart. It's very lumpy and too much vibrato for my liking, although it's personal preference. #

But that's not to say Emma's bad; far from it. She's very skilled and better than me. And she seems like a lovely person, a contrast from Sabine Meyer's reputation!

  • Which of Emma's Mozart recordings do you mean? The one she recorded when she was 18 years old, or the one she made a couple of years ago with the RPO?

  • Not the one on the basset clarinet: I have yet to hear that one. I think it was with the English Chamber Orchestra.

  • The recording with the ECO is the one she made while she was still at school. It's not really fair to tell people to judge her on that when she's made so many records since.

  • Well, I didn't know it was that old! Well done to her for that at that age!

Anyway, her Stanford concerto is pretty rough and she uses way too much vibrato for my liking, as she demonstrates when she plays "Voi che sapete" in this clip.

On another note (no pun intended) she is great at arranging stuff, like the Figaro exerpt here.

  • sabine meyer is much better,

  • lol i can play this, good one. I'm grade 5 joy.

    hahahhaaaaa

clarinet player fans suck on this

    :)

  • But can you play it well?

  • yep, well according to my teacher

  • Okay, I apologize then. I just wish you hadn't told all your fellow clarinetists/fans to "suck on this." I've played for almost nine years, and it's a big part of my life.

  • i played for 3 years, i didnt meen clarinet players i ment the fans of her and the other people, its pointless fighting over who is better, because its such an easy peice to play so you casnt judge anyone on this or anything else

    :)

  • Emma is a super clarinetist!

Sabine Meyer eat your heart out...

  • Emma Johnson is nowhere near as great a player as Sabine Meyer. Chalk and Cheese.

  • That is so great. I hope that i can be a great clarinettist like that oneday. i've only played for 4 years but i am at grade 7 AMEB (Australia), and i want to be a music teacher. So if you have ANY advice about clarinet, please let me know.

    Jess

  • I listen to Emma Johnson's rendition of Mozart's clarinet concerto all the time. Thank you, Ms. Johnson, for embracing life and performing such fine music.

  • I play the clarinet and i hope to be as good as you one day

  • i dont play clarenet, but we have the same name

  • I dont play the clarinet and my name is not Emma

  • I don't play the clarinet and my name is not Emma and I am not female.

  • Emma's name is not Dave, she is not a man, and she does not play the electric guitar. Not sure if she drives a Torana...

  • I don't have the same name, I have another name! Not only that, but I'm a virtuoso on: the fiddle, the cello, the big bass drum, auntie Nellie's telly, and-a-rum-tum-tum! I've also been sniffing 'roo farts, so I'm as high a kite in the month of July!!!

  • I play clarinet! and my names Emma...wow.

  • Beautifull.

I like her sound. :D Clarinet rulez.

  • Aww doesn't she av a lovely voice hehe. I wish i can be as good as her one day.

  • WOW! I love you Emma
