I'm guessing you are referring to the textile industry in which Americans did copy the British designed weaving machines, but on the other hand American "originality" and "ingenuity" is what brought us to the top, not copying old British designs. The Chinese completely lack originality and a sense of thievery is instilled in them at a very young age. None of them want to work on anything of their own to make money, they prefer taking the short and easy route.

In the past China were the innovator, the first to develop gunpowder, rocketry and printing press. saying they are copying now does not in anyway point to them not being innovator in the future, that was the point being made. that this is a progress, no one start from the top of innovation.

China was the richest country in the world long long ago because of their stranglehold on the silk and textile industry and a few other exports and they were innovators of early astronomy, ship building, and gun powder but nothing in comparison to what the west have developed over the last 100 years.
