Since the ball is round, instead of aiming where to land at the end, just like formula, he is teaching where it will be by showing the first landing position. and this serve is amazinng.
Try to do it. You will find out it is hard to do with enough downspin without notice but enough short table & low so that opponent can't do a forehand flick but instead just return. You mostly return a BH, but wang hao will give you a rpb attack.
Wang Hao is rank #1 now, and the coach was ranking #1 in the late 90s. He is the youngest head coach in China's history. Go to register in yourself to your province and national TTA and fight up to the ladder and meet him.

@quinceythao uhm, no you are totally wrong. it's either a backspin serve that doubles as a nospin serve, or a backspin serve that doubles as a sidespin serve.
Hard to see in this video but the backspin is so great that the ball boomerangs back to the net. When these serves are done correctly they are impossible to attack, too much backspin to flat hit and too low to lift over the net.
At the international level you don't really worry about getting "aces" with your serves anymore. What you're looking for is to set yourself up for a 3rd ball attack. (e.g you know the opponent will return the ball but you want to force a weak or out of position return)

That's why Waldner was the more respected player, because he doesn't rely too much on his services. Liu Guoliang said in an interview that he doesn't last in longer rallies and pretty much relies on his 3rd and 5th ball attacks.
Well penholders have an advantage in their serves, and a good serve sets up early attacks to kill it. It's a style and method, doesn't make it weaker.
Of course Waldner does. All players at high level minds of their services, a bad serve means a difficult to manage return. Almost all penholders like short rallies, service and attacking 3rd ball.

waldner is pretty nice too but as they discussed before, waldner's serves are not meant to win the point whereas lg's are.

That's why Waldner was the more respected player, because he doesn't rely too much on his services. Liu Guoliang said in an interview that he doesn't last in longer rallies and pretty much relies on his 3rd and 5th ball attacks.

Well penholders have an advantage in their serves, and a good serve sets up early attacks to kill it. It's a style and method, doesn't make it weaker.

Of course Waldner does. All players at high level minds of their services, a bad serve means a difficult to manage return. Almost all penholders like short rallies, service and attacking 3rd ball.
