To make it short and simple, success in America is based on more than just how smart you are and what grades you get. Charisma and likability are also factors. In some industries it can be the main factor.

I agree that college entrance exams are only due to known knowledge, but as far as socializing leading to creativity, I guess it depends on the context. You can go to party after party but never meet anyone who's a phD in whatever field and make friends and such. I'm guessing this is why some people feel lonely because they can't engage in an intellectual conversation. That is a different story. @lg123xyz Culture and traditions have nothing do with being a leader or not. China out of all the East Asian countries in my opinion is the least traditional despite their rich cultural past. Based on my observations since I'm Chinese. You have to look at Japan, they share similar cultural values with China, ie Confucianism etc. However, they tend to stick to tradition much more so. Despite that, look at the companies and leaders they produce. This situation is only unique to the United States.

@papertiger7 Japan is good at one thing... manufacturing because they are very disciplined and good in areas of science and technology. However they lack vision and innovation, although Sony has seen some measurable success with it's Walkman in the past, mostly due to innovations in manufacturing on a pre-existing technology. It has sinced been replaced by newer technology (software) from the West. We've seen this time and time again where th West innovates and the East immitates.

The reason Asians aren't in the high ranking corporate jobs is because they are raised to do one thing and that is to do well in school. This is done to such an extent that the parents often drown and eliminate the childrens' creativity and decision making. I would know because I am an Australia born Asian, yet my parents still instill that kind of goal into my head.

One of the reasons Asians (like me) don't grow up to excel socially is because American culture seems to enjoy marginalizing, mocking, and de-sexualizing Asian people. Many Chinese kids are muted and they grow up to be silent and weak willed just look at my father. Americans aren't pressuring their kids enough though walk down the street and you'll find kids with D average grades and egos bigger then their heads.

We have certain cultural similarities like being very serious about your job and your studies and listening quietly when other people talk. And really subdued expression of emotions. What Yang doesn't get, and frankly this is something many people don't get it, is that most CEOs are educated old folks (50s-60s) who worked in a particular industry in the US for many years. How many old Asian men fit that profile? Not many. American universities were not dominated by Asians in the 70s like they are now.

I agree that college entrance exams are only due to known knowledge, but as far as socializing leading to creativity, I guess it depends on the context. You can go to party after party but never meet anyone who's a phD in whatever field and make friends and such. I'm guessing this is why some people feel lonely because they can't engage in an intellectual conversation. That is a different story. But I'll make this short; I do believe Asian are creative; look at Jon Chang & card counting.

And the numbers get worse the further away you move from the Bay Area, so much so that even though Asians punch way above their weight in terms of Ivy League and Berkeley admissions (17% and 46% respectively), they are almost non-existent in corporate middle and upper management. Surely that cannot all be attributed to "Asian culture," whatever that means. In a true meritocracy, corporate officialdom should mirror elite school demographics. But that is completely not the case.

Based on my observations since I'm Chinese. You have to look at Japan, they share similar cultural values with China, ie Confucianism etc. However, they tend to stick to tradition much more so. Despite that, look at the companies and leaders they produce. This situation is only unique to the United States.

However they lack vision and innovation, although Sony has seen some measurable success with it's Walkman in the past, mostly due to innovations in manufacturing on a pre-existing technology. It has sinced been replaced by newer technology (software) from the West. We've seen this time and time again where th West innovates and the East immitates.

The reason Asians aren't in the high ranking corporate jobs is because they are raised to do one thing and that is to do well in school. This is done to such an extent that the parents often drown and eliminate the childrens' creativity and decision making. Many Chinese kids are muted and they grow up to be silent and weak willed just look at my father. What Yang doesn't get, and frankly this is something many people don't get it, is that most CEOs are educated old folks (50s-60s) who worked in a particular industry in the US for many years. How many old Asian men fit that profile? Not many. American universities were not dominated by Asians in the 70s like they are now.

I'm not sure what the statistics are for Asians in general, but almost 1/3 of 2nd generation Chinese men are marrying white women based on University of Maryland's recent report:"A Portrait of Chinese Americans". asians aren't in leadership positions maybe because 60 percent of the population are white and only 5 percent are asian... majority always rules regardless of where u you.... you are not going to see caucasians running majority of the company in china.... however asian in america are doing lot better... I think we will see major break through soon... there are other factors too...but I think the one above is the most important one....
