  • was there !

  • Adding to he below post: It was like having the guys play in your living room because it was a small auditorium. Banks had an M3 (just like mine!!!) and was playing through two Leslie 122s. Selling England had just made it to the record stores a few months earlier. I stole my dad's car and drove 6 of us to the show, and then got lost in Chicago's South Side looking for gas on a Sunday night during the gas embargo. - oh yeah - and while most of us were teenagers, there was a 9-yr too. Sheesh!

  • Adding to the confusion ... I was at the Chicago Northwestern University show in 1973. Hard to tell anything with this video, but here are my thoughts:

    * Hackett and Banks are in the correct position on stage

    * Hackett and Banks sat together at Hackett's position when they did 12-string together

    * There were 3 rear-screen projectors.

    * Gabriel's "Bat Hat" is not correct

    * There were no "flower head" costumes

    * This was not shot at the concert I attended

There were less than 200 in the theater.

  • Please remove this FAKE!!!!!!!!

  • @Guitman73 Huh???? Why have they done this :( Snaffs is sad now...

  • not Phils Gretsch drums. period.

  • wtf 0:56

  • Impostors! this is not Genesis..the audio is Genesis, but the band not.

  • I picked up this fake video at a record show about 20 years ago (it was an extra bit put on at the end of some Montreal '74 clips). Amusing little video, but obviously not the real deal.

  • From 1:22, the guy posing as Hackett is not even moving his fingers. :) Such an obvious fake!

  • All fun and games aside... Just look at "Hackett's" guitar, then check out other videos or equipment lists from the time. As far as I know, Steve was still playing Les Pauls at the time, not Fender's. Just my measly 2 pence.

Still fun to watch and listen to, come on, who amongst us Gen-heads haven't air-drummed or guitar to a Genesis song? ;)

  • jajajajaja, very funny

  • Sherbrooke (Quebec)

  • The gig might be Sherbrooke (Quebec)

  • wonderfull tour this is the starting song (so them in rome on 73)

  • This is a fake. It was done in Canada.

  • It is a fact that some parts of the Sherbrooke show WAS shot. I was at that show and not long after I saw a projection that wasmade by some students from Montcalm Highschool, Now I can't tell if this is a fake or not. The quality is too poor. We can't even tell if this is Hackett or not. The same guys also took some nice pictures I still own.

  • This is the Roxy on the strip

  • YOU can stop right here.

    The music only is genuine.

The rest is ...a kind of "the rest".

    Never mind the bollocks hé!

  • FAKE - been in the bootleg world for years. I got a copy of it in the mid-90's. This is not Genesis at all (at least the video isn't). And Hackett looks like he's 10 feet tall here.

  • jackbeerman ... i think you have got tobe joking!!! this is absolutely genesis !!!!

  • I am 100 percent sure this is not Genesis. I know one of the guys in the video. They were pretending and put Genesis music on the soundtrack! The music is Genesis but not the video.

  • at the time everyone wanted to sound like Pink Floyd

  • just plain awesome

  • This IS definitely Genesis. As far as I know footage is from a show in Montreal, Canada (might even correspond to the show from which best bootleg of that era GREAT LOST LIVE ALBUM was made. It was later dubbed by Gabriel + band for the Archives Box 1) Sound on this one is from the unmistakable LIVE album.

  • @tubellarbells The audio is GENESIS but the dudes in the vid aren't.

  • Unforgettables Genesis !!!! The best symphonic/prog rock ever... Peter+Phil+Steve+Tony+Mike!

  • que banda podria compararse hoy en dia con genesis?

  • genesis rules

  • I've this live in vynil record imported in italy and into a DVD...it isn't so rare

  • GENESIS - I- L-O-V-E- Y-OUUUUU!!!!!

  • It's a very well done fake...take a look at the guitar on Musical Box..Steve never used a Fender Stratocaster until the Wind & Wuthering tour (1976-1977)..those were the days of the Gibson Custom 2 pickups in black finish, who was stolen in Germany in early 1974 (Selling England by the Pound tour)...anyway,very well done

  • are you saying this is from a different concet ? i know you're not saying it isn't genesis...

  • I know for sure this is a fake. I am friends with the drummer. This was a lip sync by some Canadian guys. It has been circulating for years--I got it at least 10 years ago, probably more. But it is absolutely 100 percent not Genesis on the video--the sound is from a Genesis show.

  • if its fake, good job. looks real

  • Don't get confused by the voice. The original 8mm was silent, then muxed at a later time...

  • During The Musical Box section..the guitarist doesn't look like Steve and the guitar doesn't look like a Les Paul. Also the bass doesn't look like the Ric. This is very confusing. The voice sounds like Gabriel. Bizarre.

  • 1) I got it in colour, b/w comes from being n-th generation

    2) It is said to be a short 8mm from the early years of the Canadian cover band "The Musical Box""

    3) The presumed venue and date is Sherbrooke, April 1973

    4) Who can tell?

  • I'm very interested by your color version! Can you upload it on youtube please? Thank you. :)

  • @mauriziocarita Its not The Musical Box as their "Mike Rutherford" is left handed, Mike was right handed.

  • @Bitsforboats Yes indeed! and their "Phil Collins" was right-handed whereas the real Phil is left-handed... as is the drummer in this video/film

  • @mauriziocarita

hey guys now watch my cover ! Please enjoy this : "Duke's travels cover by Pino Lettieri" and after, Behind the lines /Duchess

    P

  • @mauriziocarita

cant be musical box, maybe another tribute...sebastien lamothe, the bassist and one of the founder of tmb, is left handed.

  • Fake ! Fake ! Fake !

  • It's a bit rare but I've had it for at least 15 years (my copy might be a generation better with just a little more color) but overall around the same & it's real not a cover band (which nowdays I'm sure you could be convinced somebody is trying to fake it).

  • This looks one of the first three concerts I saw in NYC. They played at Howard Steins "Acadamy of Music" on 14th st. and third ave in 1973 which had an orchestra pit. Looking at the vid it looks like whoever took this was in the 2nd tier ( there were three ) as it was an old movie theater.

The other place they played was in Philharmonic hall which happened to be the first rock band that ever played there but by thethe angle of the camera it doesn't seem possible.

  • Well this sounds and looks like the real Genesis to me...

  • This is clearly a tribute band or something.

  • There are plenty of things wrong with this statement:

    1. It was shot in black and white. Nothing has been shot in black and white in years and years.

    2. It's obvious from the picture quality that this is from the 70s.

    3. That is the unmistakable voice of Peter Gabriel.

  • wasn´t that video filmed in Shepperton in 1973?

  • WAY KEWL!

  • Very nice rare stuff!! Merci beaucoup

  • thats collins alright. you can tell by his inverted drum set. Man tony's awsome, supper's ready and cinema show were probably his best songs.

  • Yeah Fake. The Guitarists using a Fender you can tell by the Headstock and ive never seen Steve Hackett with a Fender only Gibson Les Pauls, (during his time with Genesis)

  • maybe was anthony phillips

  • truly rare stuff!!

  • Amazing technology for 1973, the film is shit, but the audio can also record overbubs and Peter singing harmonies, i wish i had this technology in my studio today. Shame its a scam, i really wanted it to be real.

  • Was that Frank Sinatra I saw singing with Peter ?

  • so why would anybody go out of their way to make a fake? What waste of time.

  • jajajaj steve ..he s not a bigger guy,it s a fake

  • Dude from :58 it look pretty left handed to me. Phil is damn good. I use to give him heaps.

  • Cmon, Phil is left-handed, the guy here is rightie:P

  • This cannot be Genesis because the only pro shot footage from the Foxtrot tour was from Bataclan. Thus proving this was fake, but a good fake.

  • Hi,

This is absolutely positively not Genesis. I know the "drummer" in this video personally. Some guys from Montreal did this for fun, and synched it to Genesis music. The guy himself once got it in a trade labeled "Genesis Sherbrooke 1973" or something like that. It has been circulating for many years but it is not Genesis. I am 100 percent certain.

    Jack

  • the drummer in this clip is definately playing left handed!!!

  • He was trying to imitate Phil. They synched it to a soundtrack, I think Genesis Live but I am not sure. I have been in the drummer on this clip's house, trust me it is not Genesis.

  • Take it from me -

    this is NOT Genesis.

  • worst fake i've ever seen

  • Video quality is poor, but the fake is almost perfect.

  • this is not genesis the guitar player is not using a les paul hellooooooooooo and on the sequence of musical box the guy that should be mike is doing steve's part look it again

  • its genesis cos the base player here is right handed and the musical box base player is left also why would anyone want to film it in black and white when we in colour screen today

and no other tribute band has recreated genesis like the musical box and it isn't them and lastly the actions of the singer are just like peter used to do and the same goes for the drummer too he plays just like phil collins its defo genesis

  • The others tribute band are "ridiculous" (Sorry... :D ) compared to orignal and to the musical box. It's a very strange video, because it's perfect... And only Genesis and the musical box can do that. But this is not genesis or the musical box ! (Sorry for my bad English :D )

  • Whoever the are or were, they were a fine imitation.

  • @ikhnaton

how can you pretend they are all ridiculous? you've seen them all? no offense but you should work a bit on what looks like a narrow minded thinking rather than your english ;)

  • This is one of any number of Genesis tribute bands, with possibly overdubbed Genesis audio, or audio from The Musical Box. They are actually perfect at this show. And "Steve" is way too tall.

  • oh, that's Peter alright. from where did this come?

  • It's probably Kevin Gilbert, coming back from the grave to frighten us once again.

  • Yeah, that could be. scary, man!

  • Oh, come on, Frink. 'At least people do something with their time'? You can do better than that, surely? Not the most incisive reply I've ever read. A bit 'bleughhh' kind of thing. You may as well say 'at least they're breathing'. Yes? And? So what? Sharpen up, Sir! (or Madam).

  • All I'm saying is it's easy to say that someone has too much time on their hands when they are doing something productive. I think you missed the point of what I was saying. If all they did was lay around breathing, being lazy and not enjoying the time giving to them, then I guess you could say they had too much time on their hands. But they did something with the time they got, silly as it may be. At least they were enjoying themselves, hopefully.

  • Ab-so-loot-lee NOT Genesis! Lol!!! Everything about it is wrong; the style of clothes, the guitars, 'Gabriels' flower (which looks as if someones mum has just run it up out of cardboard). Why would anyone spend time faking it? Too much time on their hands, probably. American, most likely. Comic-Book Guy and his heavy friends. Stopped playing Dungeons and Dragons long enough to knock out a fake Genesis video...

  • This is off topic, but the phrase "Too Much Time

On Someones Hands" is one of the most misused phrases. You could say Genesis themselves had too much times on their hands when they made their music. At least people do something with their time, even if it is something goofy as this video. I just had to rant about that.

  • I am a bit young for all this and not a real genesis-head but would like to believe that is really Genesis in this vid. Why would it not be?

  • Someone went to a LOT of trouble to fake this. Much of the audio sounds like it could be dubbed from real Genesis bootlegs, but the bodies on stage do not look like Genesis, the Phil and Mike especially, and Steve certainly didn't play a white Strat in this era. Interesting though...

  • i am wrong, after watching some videos, he did sit during the musical box early on, but still doesn't look like a Rickenbacker

  • 1. That isn't a les paul Hackett is using, which from day one until today, he mainly uses.

    2. Michael Rutherford didn't sit during the musical box, he played a 12 string Rickenbacker guitar (which doesnt look like that guitar in the video) and played the bass pedals standing up,and before this is brought up, the reason why he is sitting on the cover of genesis live is because he had to switch guitars for suppers ready but for the musical box, he stayed on the same guitar for the whole song.

  • I think the real point here is why would anyone spend the time and effort spoofing this? what would be the point? I say it's real, just from a low-quality, probably 8mm film and then copied onto a VHS tape before going bad, or being a copy of a copy or maybe a 3rd or 4th gen. who knows the technical details. I digress

  • "why would anyone spend the time and effort spoofing this? "

    You're asking a useless question.

  • do explain, oh omnipotent one

  • Crappy footage of crappy impostors.

  • I owned a multi generation video of this back in 93..don't even remember where I got it. The quality is much better then this and I've watched it many times..I'm convinced its Genesis.

  • This is not the real Genesis, even when they move we can notice that it is not Peter Gabriel and the other musicians are not either. This is a fake.

  • Ok I've watched a little more closely and Mike is stood up at the start, you have to squint though the quality is that poor, which leads me on to my next point.

bigiainw if you have the original it must be in much better quality so any chance of sharing with us?

  • @ bigiainw This is not known in Genesis circles as the Black Show. The Black show was the latter part of the Selling England tour, this is a Foxtrot show.

It more than likely is a fake but why would someone go to so much trouble?

@genesisfan3 Mike Rutherford is indeed taller than Peter Gabriel but Mike is sat down!

  • Real or not... the music certainly ROCKS!!

  • Two things: Peter Gabriel is not taller than Michael Rutherford (whose pretty tall...) and, on the Willow Farm section notice those lights lining the base of the back of the stage. They didn't have those then. On the Foxtrot tour Genesis could barely afford a couple lamps overhead.

  • This IS genesis, a show sht in california in early 1974, known in genesis circles as the Black Show for obvious reasons! I have the original. It is from the same tour as the Shepperton 16mm film

  • Nope.

  • I agree, having reviewed the 20/12/73 show from Burbank, this is different. It looks similar to some very short clips I have seen with a German soundtrack, but it's got me stumped! It is though, undeniably Genesis themselves.

  • I think this Genisis also. But, if you have a good original please share it. I love the old stuff.

  • The curtain in this show is white. In a Black show they used a black curtain behind them. The Black Show was the second half of the Selling England show. The show from California was a black show shot in Santa Monica--I actually drove by the Civic Center today where it was performed. This is a fake Foxtrot era white curtain show.

  • @bigiainw I was at THIS show !!!

  • sorry that i must say that this seems to be the original Genesis of 1973. If not, if it was a Fake, it is better or at least more powerful than MusicalBox ever will be. So maybe the sound is original, but for me it seems totally autentic. I dont see any bad synchronization between Sound and Video either.

    anyway, i love youtube,

    cu Klaus,

    crocotone studio

  • Not Genesis. Someone tried to pull the (Lamb's) wool over your eyes! Looks as if it was shot on one of those toy camcorders that used cassette tapes.

  • This is a FAKE! It's been circulating for years on bootleg video as an amusing little experiment. But don't be fooled, this is not Genesis.

  • Hackett didn't use a strat til 77. That's not Phil on the drums, he sits differently. The audio might well be Genesis as it's dubbed.

  • The conspiration theorists at work again - well, at least you're always good for a chuckle...

  • oh, that should be 'conspiracy' of course - 'conspiration' is French - my bad...

  • Fake. Simple as that.

  • Comment removed

  • Well... this isn't the band Musical Box.

And the lead singer sounds just like Gabriel.

    Very interesting.

  • This isn't Genesis. It's not Phil's kit (where are the tubular bells) it's not set up like Phil's kit and it's not Phil playing it. Gabriel didn't have anything over his mouth when he sang Watcher, that's not Hackett and it's not his guitar, I could go on. Oh and PG's flower mask didn't look like that.

  • The flower mask look like that during the foxtrot tour.(Not the same mask during SEBTP tour) The drums kit look like the gretsh drums kit used by Phil during Nursery/Foxtrot tour. I have also doubt about this video. This is perfect, except the guitar solo during the musical box. Maybe this is a Tribute band like "the musical box" ... but what a tribute band! (And sorry for my poor English)

  • It is not real Genesis, it is a fake and maybe not a tribute band cause we don't see nothing. Maybe it is a group of people that filmed in the dark and try to make us believe it is rare archive footage, but it is not it is a FAKE.

  • Since I saw them 11 times around the NYC metro area I guarentee you that its them. They played several times at the Acadamy of Music , once at the Philharmonic Hall and a few times at the Beacon Theater in New Jersey. It looks 100% authentic because I was there.

  • "It's not Phil's kit (where are the tubular bells) it's not set up like Phil's kit and it's not Phil playing it."

    Haha, damn.

  • Oh yes it is!

  • I'm pretty damn sure that's them... I listened carefully and everything about the clips leads me to believe they're authentic. Right down to the atrocious sound quality of the recordings...

  • It,s not them

  • This is obviously not Genesis, why would someone post something like this and say it's Genesis? Do you think there's no one out there who can see through this?

  • This used to circulate on VHS tape as Genesis from some place in Canada--I cannot remember the name. But it is a lip synch.

  • Thanks ! Great moments...
