It's amazing how Guthrie can capture the essence of all these famous players yet retain so much of his own style and musicality. An incredible performance!!!
@rbrs300 Guthrie does a cover of "Get You Back" here on youtube. It's just audio though, but he did the whole piece in its entirety. Just type in guthrie govan get you back. The video has just under 20,000 views. /watch?v=qJfDPXFUxNQ
Why is everybody talking about Shawn Lane like he's some kind of god? Powers of Ten nearly put me to sleep. His playing and music were the definition of pretentious and self-indulgent.
@pawo161 You obv didnt listen to what he said. There was an POLL taken, to vote guitarists in different catagories. He made this song after people voted for the winners.
@pawo161 I'm sick of readin' comments like this, you guys have turned buckethead into an overrated guitar player, i mean, he has some amazing and mad guitar skills, but a lot of guitar players have them, he's not an outstanding guitar player, these guys on the list have something that not every guitar player has, you know what i mean? I hope so.
This is cool. I scrolled down watching the comments to listen to the styles without seeing the names and most of them were totally obvious. Guthrie is a genius.
The players that Guthrie does here are truely the GREATS, And funny how the idiots who make up those Rolling Stone lists haven't heard of half the guys here.
i wonder if people truly understand the incomparable brilliance of this jam. he actually made all those greats gather and play one big tune. i personally can see each and every one of them playing right in front of my inner eye as soon as guthrie govan starts mimicking their respective styles with BREATHTAKING perfection. i'm in awe. this man is absolutely unbelievable.
@DVDKC I'm sick of people saying that Hendrix was the best guitarist in the world, i mean, wow, he was awesome and he inspired most of all the guitar players we have nowadays, he took the electric guitar to a new era, he might be the best ARTIST of theworld, but not the best guitarist, Guthrie is my personal favorite guitarist, because he puts soul, even on shredding, he's not predictable, and he's a virtuoso, that's a complete guitarist, hendrix was just soul, and it was good, but not the best.
@pepectm I agree the innovators will always be leaders becasue they started the revolution. Ritchie Blackmore for me is a famous for the riffs he wrote just as much as a great guitar player. Also the dead artists become legends Kossoff, Hendrix,Bon Scott ect ect.
it´s so cool to see a shredder who didn´t forget about the blues and that shows in his playing, even in wild and supersonic moments, most shredders sound like machines that bore me in the second song but i can be months listening to Guthrie, what a master.
@antonio610 That's a bunch of hipster bullshit. Slash has a great, distinctive feel. Whether you like him or not, you could tell it was him if he played a single note.
@idkwhattonamemyself He sounds like a million other rock guitarists. Pentatonic and bends, what a genius! Get some standards. I've been in bands with guys who blow him out of the water. Hell, he's not even the best guitarist GNR ever had - Buckethead and Bumblefoot play circles around him.
@antonio610 Get some standards? The fuck is that supposed to mean. Buckethead and Bumblefoot are much more technically accomplished, but suck at songwriting. GNR was GNR because of Slash, and that's the truth. He may not have a bunch of scales to throw around, but he's got a lot of audiation and inflections in his playing. That's what regular people take notice of, and what musicians seem to miss somehow. The audience doesn't think about scales and chops, only sounds. He sounds great.
@idkwhattonamemyself Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin were equal if not greater parts of what made the Guns what they were in terms of songwriting. Velvet Revolver, Slash's Snakepit and his solo album prove he's a mediocre to boring-as-shit songwriter. Slash has some memorable leads, sure - but they were over good songs. So he got overrated. I'm not trying to say that more theory or technique is better, but that anyone with a minimal understanding of rock guitar can do what he did.
I'll have to agree with dave , he is more than a decent guitarist, just because he doesn't shred all the time doesn't mean he's not good. He has a brilliant sense of melody and he writes great music. There are many names didn't make it into the list which is guthrie's own choice , personally I'd prefer blackmore over some of the guitarists here for example.
@antonio610 Look at the list sir. The only place where he could fit in is the ''best vibrato' section and they obviously placed BB.King there out of respect.(even though slash has a better vibrato). In addition, Pat Metheny is not in, Adreas Oberg is not in. Does that mean that ''they are exactly where they belong, which is nowhere near a list of even decent players''?. Also, I really like how you are using the word 'decent' to refer to top professional guitar players...
@antonio610 Well, if Slash doesn't belong on this list (or any list), why the hell is Tom Morello here? Guy is one big gimmick, and a horribly overrated player. Slash can at least play, unlike Tom. And no, not a Slash fan, but I will defend the guy.
@zedchuva Come on, Tom's category is best use of an effect, not best guitarist ever, or something about guitar skill's. Is just the use of guitar effect's, and you said it yourself AT LEAST slash can play, anyone who has been playing for about 6 months can play what slash played, everybody can play pentatonic licks as Slash does, that's why he is not on the list, but Tom Morello was the first who came up with those crazy effects, i hope i made it clear
@antonio610 Slash is really good, it is just he is overhyped by so many fucking idiot kids that knw nothing bout guitar (i'm young enough i can say that). However by us real guitarists i think people rlly underrate his incredibly complex song writing and phrasing abilities. He can still craft amazing solos, not like Kirk Hammet who just wanks the fret board with wha wha
@ArseLoad0fMetal666 It's a shame what happened to Kirk. Some of his 80's stuff is really interesting. Sometimes I wonder how a musician of Hetfield's caliber can stand being in a band with two guys who don't practice since the 90's.
@antonio610 No need to say that about slash. He's a great guitar player and he puts a lot of emotion into his playing. Why isn't he a "decent" guitarist?
@JER115 Because countless other guitarists can craft a catchy pentatonic lead here and there. It's not a reflection of "emotion", it's a reflection of proper application of vary basic theory. I can't call a guy great when he's famous for doing stuff better players wouldn't stoop to. John Petrucci and Guthrie for example could drive Slash out of business easy if that was their scene.
@antonio610 Still not a reason for slash not being a decent guitarist, just means that there are some better players around. In my opinion, his playing does have some level of emotion put into to it. If he was just applying basic theory when improvising, he would sound more like senseless shredders running up and down scales, but that's not the case because slash is more of a bluesy/rock musician and actually plays musical phrases with direction, rather than sweeping a Dminor forever
@pepectm guthrie is no doubt a great player,he is better than friedman technically speaking..and i was only joking about my 1st comment,i know guthrie can do what friedman can..but don't underestimate friedman dude,.any skilled guitar player can duplicate his works but no one,i mean no one! can outclass him in his style, not even guthrie i think...."with his hands tied up and without a guitar"?you're out of your fucking mind dude
for everyone here who's saying " where's .. .." or other random comments, watch this interview of guthrie at 32:58www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZsyuJLiFjs , he talks about this vid there
@pepectm no guthrie is god lol, if a normal fusion player/hippie took the time to figure out how to sound like the best guitarist in the world/ and there licks and not use them one bit in his writing.... im sorry dude but he is god.... the first step is exception
The Edge part is just awesome, so is eric johnson, james taylor, peter townsend, B.B King, David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler, Albert Lee, E.V.H, Al Di Meola, Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert, Zakk Wylde, Tom Morello, Satch, Steve Vai, Sonny Landreth, Jeff Beck, John schofield, and hendrix part's.
That it doesn't matter that he does not have the skill to play an acoustic finger picking style...it's all good?
Well, it aint —but how can I expect someone like you who posts themselves mindlessly running through scales with no foundation or context...just gibberish. Your use of the Harmonic minor is just miserable. You're a generic shredder who is not a musician.
@Rexicano you mentioned a great point. Context. My videos aren't musical, but rather practice journal entries. If you were referring on the video to the Al Di Meola clip, Govan emulated him wonderfully. You can say whatever you want about me. My music isn't featured on my channel, so it doesn't hurt my intelligence one bit. You're just confused.
@Rexicano Your channel says that you're a music teacher. I have to admit that it sucks to be under a teacher who goes around youtube bashing other guitar players. It's time to realize that there is no better or worse.
Personally, I don't see music as a competition, but you obviously have the mentality of being better or worse than someone else at the instrument. With that said, I would hate to see how Guthrie would destroy you on the other side of the stage, and dare I say, myself, as well.
hahahah..... I was really expecting some John Petrucci part (my favorite, please don't start to bitching about him) but, the "Alternated Picking Crown" had to be given to Master Gilbert, no doubt about that :)
After this, i still wonder why people has doubt about the fact that Govan is the Greatest and Complete Guitar Player Alive
Wow Guthrie pwnd this one. This is incredible! I loved the Eric Johnson, David Gilmour, Paul Gilbert and Yngwie parts. That Al Di Meola bit was epic too XD Btw I think it's implied in the song that Paul Gilbert is the king. lol
I listened this the first time when it had been viewed just a thousand times and was blown away immediately. I've played it over and over again and it never wears out. How one man could not only capture so many great players' tone and style, but also make a good song out of the puzzle.
Few notes: 1. Would have been great to hear Holdsworth on the jam 2. How the hell he played the Gilbert lick? 3. Guthrie deserves more publicity within the guitar scene. What a humble man & inspiring player.
great player but bb king mimic was way off.. eric johnson was spot on! and yngwie awesome!! PG too!! haha tom morello awesome.... okay okay errone was great except bb king mimic
Really cool video, but there is one dude that isn't making the cut in my opinion... Tom Morello's clip is kinda weak sauce, in my opinion... Great vid though, and cool ass guitar playing by all.
@BLUEBLOODRED13 Erm, yes it is 'cool ass playing', except its not by 'all', it's just Guthrie playing in the different styles of the 'greats'. In my book, Guthrie is pretty much the greatest there is at the moment!
@nwtrucker38 Erm, I wasn't aware that it was just Guthrie, and yes, Guthrie is my favorite. And Erm, Tom Morello is a hack in my book. I do not enjoy his guitar playing.
It's amazing how Guthrie can capture the essence of all these famous players yet retain so much of his own style and musicality. An incredible performance!!!

Best everything - Guthrie Govan
Indiegaze 5 months ago
hahahah.....

That Al Di Meola bit was epic too XD Btw I think it's implied in the song that Paul Gilbert is the king. lol
MrKittles1123 5 months ago
I listened this the first time when it had been viewed just a thousand times and was blown away immediately. I've played it over and over again and it never wears out. How one man could not only capture so many great players' tone and style, but also make a good song out of the puzzle.
Few notes: 1. Would have been great to hear Holdsworth on the jam 2. How the hell he played the Gilbert lick? 3. Guthrie deserves more publicity within the guitar scene. What a humble man & inspiring player.

Really cool video, but there is one dude that isn't making the cut in my opinion... Tom Morello's clip is kinda weak sauce, in my opinion... Great vid though, and cool ass guitar playing by all.
BLUEBLOODRED13 6 months ago
@BLUEBLOODRED13 Erm, yes it is 'cool ass playing', except its not by 'all', it's just Guthrie playing in the different styles of the 'greats'. In my book, Guthrie is pretty much the greatest there is at the moment!
nwtrucker38 5 months ago
@nwtrucker38 Erm, I wasn't aware that it was just Guthrie, and yes, Guthrie is my favorite. And Erm, Tom Morello is a hack in my book. I do not enjoy his guitar playing.
