  • Check out the original: 'I wish I knew how it would feel to be free' by Nina Simone.

  • i've been trying to get backing track for this song for ages can't find it anywhere :(

  • Anyone know where I can get a backing track for this?

  • this is my best friend and my favorite ad ever:D

  • THIS MADE ME LOOK FORWARD FOR ADS ;)

  • No adverts like this, on tv anymore :')

  • OMFW! IM 13 NOW AND WHEN I WAS LIKE, YOUNGER THEN 5 I SAW THIS ADVERT AND EVERYTIME IT CAME ON I SANG ALONG! AND IT ONLY OCCURED TO ME NOW TO LOOK IT UP! MEMORIES! do you remember the one when this guy sat on a bench beside some girl and he made the noise of a phone ringing and he takes a coke bottle out of his bag and say 'hello? i think its for you' and hands it to the girl. i always thot how rmantic that was...

  • anyone know this singer's name?

this is my favourite coke advert of all time... sounds silly, but the message got me thru a rough time in my life :)

  • @Eurafrican - YESSS! Her name is SHARLENE HECTOR, and she is BAAAAD BROAD!

I just fell in love with her voice...

  • @athenalong shes one of the members of Basement Jaxx. Try looking up a few of their older tracks like 'Good Luck' and "Raindrops'

  • @loveisextynct - BET. Thanks! =]

  • @athenalong youre welcome ^^

  • the filipino version is much better!

  • THE FULL SONG is "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free" by Nina Simone (1967)!!!

i dont usually do this, but thumbs up so ppl can find this out!

  • been looking for this advert off-and-on for years. glad to have finally found it! thanks for posting!!

  • @novestige i was the same, always remembered the advert because of the song but never remembered to look for it

  • What a great voice and a stunning, yet shy smile.

I'm so happy this clip is once again available.

It proves that a quality commercial can be simple and charming.

  • I have been looking for this song for so many years!! Thank god for coca-cola

  • still in love withthis commercial. I sing it in the shower ALL the time

  • though the english version is the original the filipino version is the best!

  • Bit of info which I read in a newspaper at the time:

This advert was released at the same time as a Pepsi advert. The Pepsi advert cost millions to make, starred P!nk, Britney Spears, and Beyonce and had a Gladiator theme with hundreds of extras.

This Coke advert cost less than $50,000 to make, and the English version 'starred' Sharlene Hector who was virtually unknown at that time.

But Coke's sales increased more than Pepsi's did.

Just goes to show A-listers don't always sell.

  • Very nice song, very nice voice.....long time wanting to hear it again...

  • Sharlene Hector Sang this at The Jazz cafe whilst Doing backing vocals for Ty on Monday 31st May 2010. The whole auduience knew this song and sang it with her- she is amazing and like many Black British artists totally underated- Lets salute her and all the Black British music talelnt for Black British music month this June.

  • i didn't know that there was an english version of this. this was like my fave commercial back when I was in the Philippines

  • Sung by Sharlene Hector with 'The New Inspirational Choir'.. I love this

  • i loe this song xx =)

  • this commercial has been stuck in my head since it came out years ago. i've never forgotten it. i love it.

  • was this a song before or was it made for the commercial?

  • It was a song. Called I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free by Nina Simone

  • hahaa in school im singingg this for my spring chrous concert<3 i love this song

  • I guess its not on the concentration it is in the focus :)

  • i have loved this commercial since it first came out in 2004. it is so honest and sweet...honestly, the feeling i have when watching it is quite refreshing...i can't stop singing along with this girl and absolutely love when the choir backs her up too!

  • yeah! nikki gil's version is so heartfelt as well... i must say that all the coke commercials are great!

  • philippine's version of this coca-cola commercial is as good as the original..you better check that one out too..the lady in the comercial is NIKKI GIL who is now a very famous host and singer in the largest tv network in the philippines..

  • Beautiful...everything about it. I remember the first time I saw the commercial (luckily, my VCR was recording at the time), and I must have watched it hundreds of times ever since. There's just something so 'modestly perfect' about it. Every time I see and hear it, I feel the same way I felt the first time I saw and heard it...it kind of just 'takes you away' for sixty seconds, doesn't it? :)

  • They so need to put this commercial back on the air, it's so beautiful! I haven't heard this in years!

  • She has such an amazing voice, I love this song its beautiful!

  • seen her live.. amazinggg..!

  • ok now if someone walks up to me and hands me a coke i probably wont drink it cuz it might have something in it.

  • wow, i haven't heard or sung this song for four years, last time was in a school play, and i've been looking for it ever since! it's such an amazing song, and she sings it so beautifully.

  • I have been wanting to hear this song for soooo long. I always thought about this Coca-Cola commerical just for this song. This song is so beautiful...

  • i love it sooo much!! its like heaven in a song,

  • my comment is pretty much the same as the last person!! feckin love this version :)

  • gosh it took me years to find this and im soooooooooo happy i did just love her soooo much

  • @ayalisious i just searched 'coke ad i wish' and i found it

  • This is the one i'm looking for!!

  • I love this advert, in fact though at the time I didn't know the whole song or what it was called until recently.

This woman has an amazing voice, i'm surprised she isnt very well known, or correct me if i'm wrong!

  • She's not that well known. I think the most famous thing she has done aside from this advert is providing vocals for a few Basement Jaxx songs

  • WHATS HER NAME !!!!

  • i remember this commercial! probably my fav commercial of all time she has a great voice

  • i met that lady singing her name is sharlene hector! she has an amazing voice.. a very talented singer!

  • i love this song soooo much that i memorised it and sung it for an audition for a school musical!!! haha Its such a great song!!!

  • i luved this advert wen i first saw and heard it

u r very good beautiful voice

  • i remember this advert when i was growing up... and i felt sorry for an old man behind her who looked sad because she didnt give him a coke..

  • Filipino version is better.

  • i thinks i's a shame they used this song just to sell coke

  • filipino version is the best. i think its the original.?

    right?

  • No actually Nina Simone allowed Coke to use her song for the commercial before she died and the American version is first...but the Filipino lady has a BEAUTIFUL voice also. I love when she hits the high falseto...It's beautiful man!!!

  • oh i see.thanks for the info:))

    yeah.i admire her.lolz.

i even memorize the song! n_n

  • Thankyou,Thankyou,Thankyou!!!! I've been searching YouTube for this version of this and only ever found the spanish version - Until now!! You ROCK!!!!!

  • LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!

  • i love this commercial so much. "and though i'm waaay overdue" -- she sings that so brilliantly (along with the rest of it)! i was able to find the entire song recorded by sharlene, but i still prefer this short clip -- better tempo, sparser backing vocals. it's perfect.

  • semicolin, I love this version the best myself. Can you please let me know where you were able to locate 'the entire song'? I've been looking everyone and even contacted Coke who told me there would be no American versions of the song. Thanks.

  • Nina Simone is the TRUE Artist that recorded this song. She can be found on youtube.

  • gburgan, I meant to say that wonderwhix and you were both partly correct in your estimation about the song and the video. And little0squee, from what I remember this one is the first one and the others followed after because of it's success.

  • my first time seeing this commercial was when i was watching American Idol! It was pretty long ago. Maybe when Ruben was in it...anyway, this girl has an amazing voice! Coke has the BEST commercials EVER! I love Coke! RESPECT THE COKE!

  • dothehokeypokeyjay, Her commercial was good enough to merit international acclaim, so I guess that does mean something, the fact that it's also my favorite (we've been waiting for this single to come state-side since it was shown on 'American Idol') was the icing on the cake.

  • I'm gonna poison those crackers....

    Muhahahahahah

  • Coca-Cola created the idea alright! END OF DISCUSSION!

and by the way, how the hell did she carry all those cokes around, and their all open and in the bottle, man, thats heavy LOL XD

  • I wish u where honest but like shakira writes, No puedo pedirle a los olmos que entreguen peras. A otro perro con ese hueso y nos decimos adios :)))

  • you got it wrong...the philippine version is the original one..they find the idea was so good so they made others for the spanish and english market...

  • nah, i think this was the 1st one. but i still love our "i wish" song better because the lyrics was so pretty :)

  • With all due respect, I must disagree. Since the song was based upon the anthem, "I wish I knew what it was like to be free"... i'm guessing this was totally of American origin. If you don't know what that song is... check it out. Nina Simone. If you have definitive information otherwise, please share. But this is my understanding of this song.

  • i also saw this in a movie theatre quite some time ago

  • gburgan, wonderwhix is partly current and so are you. This is a Nina Simone song, but Coca-Coca 'borrowed' it for their commercial. This young woman fit the bill they were looking for (voice-wise), and "the rest as they say is history" because it's still being down-loaded a few years after it was originally shown, and is considered to be a fan favorite.

  • i love this commercial

  • What an advert!

  • She's frm Slough

  • I'm so happy to finally get this version on youtube. I saw it during a movie commercial. years back, but it was quickly removed.

  • i remember when i first seen this commercial OMG i had chills i need to learn the words so i can sing it lol thanx fa puttin it up

  • LOl I know what you mean. I've looked through all the videos just to find this video

  • same here!

  • I know it's only 1 min long but it's in my favourites because she's got such a beautiful voice. I've been searching for this for so long. Thank you!

  • where can i get the whole mp3 version?

  • mishi1989, You might have to contact Coca-Cola about that, as we've been trying to get the 'single' version of this song since it first came out, but they only released a special version in Britain. Didn't make sense to us either. Maybe you could contact Ms. Hector's record label directly or if she has a website try there.

  • yeah i like the Philippine version

  • yea! finally in youtube! thank you!

  • favourite advert of all time *****

  • Does anyone no who that lady singing is, and the name of that song

  • dont know who the lady is, but the son is 'I wish i knew how it would feel to be free' by Nina Simone

  • Sharlene Hector... and the song is taken from the words of Nina Simone's "I wish I knew how it would feel to be free"... incredible song.

  • I know it's weird but I always get the chills

  • Not weird at all... love it too. It's a good message.

  • nikki gil from the philippines did this commercial too, same lyrics but translated to filipino! nice..

  • A special word of 'Thanks' to Katbutong26 for posting this video on your website, as I have the 'original' version (without the borders) on a special tape, and consider it to be my all-time favorite and a 'Classic' amongst the Coca Cola commercials. The other versions are good, but Ms. Hector's performance 'always' brings tears to my eyes, because she reminds me of Ms. Simone when she sings the song, and her performance is incredible.

  • Not only is this an amazing song, and great commercial.. when it was aired during American Idol season 1... it introduced me to Nina Simone... thank you coke!

  • found it!!! finally!!

i love her lil smile at the end!! cute!

  • O my God i am so happy i finally found this commercial!! i have been looking for years and i am excited to hear sharlene hector's voice gain. i think she was THE BEST choice for this commercial. i love her voice and the personality she brings to the commrcial. I hope you continue singing ms. hector it's truly a blessing to hear your voice after all this time.

  • This started in Great Britian, Though I haven't seen their version.

  • you shouldnt take pop from strangers

  • this is the best version of this commercial.

  • flip version > this version

  • This is still the best commercial ever. God, I love it.

  • I think sharlene hector is perfect in this commercail.

  • holy crap its the same as nikki gil. but i still lik the flip version better

  • i love the coke commercials soo cute!

  • This a perfect commercial. Not only is she great but key in on the people in the background and the way they move.

  • Would your drink a coke that a complete strange gave you in the street without a top? i wouldnt, and the fact that they would be singing and have a limitless suply of coke in there suprising full bag only worsens the idea..

  • And if some old guy came out of your fireplace on the night of December 24th, you'd shoot him, wouldn't you?

  • hell yea I'd shoot him. He better have a good reason for coming out of my fireplace in the first place.

  • LMFAO.

  • you can get that awesome song on limewire!

  • She is currently singing with Basement Jaxx on their tour. She and Vula Malinga were singing "Take Me Back To Your House" on Conan O'Brien. Look up Basement Jaxx on this site, and you'll see a performance of them live in Cologne.

  • there's a filipino version of that, sung by nikki gil

  • i remember this from like a year ago i think...i loved this commercial it was stuck in my head for weeks...she has a really nice voice is she signed?
