I'm thinking of getting this (price point seems good and it sounds really nice). If I used an OD/Distortion/Fuzz on this while set to clean would it still sound good? (I plan on using the distortion but supposing I need to switch between clean and overdriven) I'm on a tight budget and I'm going to need a show-worthy amp at some point
Nah man, the preamp gain is insane as long as you plug into the high gain input. You can definitely use it for metal, but I would definitely run a pedal in front of it.
The Windsor cab is perfect for metal. One of the guys from Bury Your Dead uses this peavey amp. I also use the cab for shows, and our music is pretty heavy
whats your take on metal though? death metal, black metal, sludge metal? This amp you could deff play sludge metal. stuff like mastodon and baroness. thats possible, but if youre thinking of playing something like nile or cannibal corpse, then look at a different amp.
If you think that only an expensive and famous amp will make you sound great just because you see a rockstar using it. You are wrong!
95% depends on your skills, your aptitude to vibrate the strings, and the gift that have to be given to be a musician. Btw the Windsor IMO sounds good!
@satrimex Amen!!! IMO Marshall amps are really great amps.. but, a lot of it all is laurels, prestige, etc........... in which btw, the earlier Marshall amps were derived from Fender, ie. the Bassman. The Peavey Windsor rivals any amp on the market today IMO... and they are actually affordable....... unlike too many others :-)
Personally i don't like shelling out an extra 200-500 dollars for a name, i'd pick a Peavy, or something lesser known for cheaper over a name brand, people who are famous allot of times are endorsed by equipment makers to basically sell more product they could be like "yeah, *insert famous name* uses this amp and you hear how awesome he is" yeah maybe a good amp but they also have a huge pedal board, and customized amps as well and they probably didn't pay as much or even anything for them.
Not trying to fuel the argument or anything just my honest opinion, but then again you don't see these in guitar centers or anything very often either, honestly the most I've seen there as of late have been the little Peaveys, those crap raven amps, one or 2 line 6 joints, valvetronix stuff and of course Mesas and a few stacks in the loud room, nothing there I've honestly have had interest in though, mesas are over priced to, albeit they do sound good, if i had the dough id get a mesa stack.
and another thing, the cab is just absaloute bollox, it could make a 2000 quid marshall sound crap. i bought a 1936 2x12 for my sooncoming (next week maybe) jcm800, it sounds good and u can fit it in a small car.
do NOT buy this amp, i thought it sounded awesome by listening to youtube videos. but when i bought it, i had it for a month and thought it sounded worse than a marshall MG pockt amp. the awesome shop i bought it from took it back asd a deposit for a used JCM800 100 watt reissue that sounds fucking awesome.
if u want tube, save ur pennies. youll regret being so impatient when u buy this amp and then think, wow by now i could of had a realy realy awesome amp if i didnt spend my money
THAT'S BULLSHIT! maybe it's just your or your guitar, OR BOTH! first off all the amp settings sound good when you put the texture to about 80% and bass up high and the treble about 2 oclock. resonance high along with presence. Don't discourage people to not buy this amp, by the way it got 150 cheaper than when it came out (650 to 500) and i thought i was getting a deal for 650, GET THIS AMP!
well it sounds pretty shit compared to a real jcm 800 on your channel anyway. and i read 1 of your comments saying that its realy loud. well my mates peavey valveking 112 was far louder than this amp even when boosted to the max.
do NOT get this amp, play on a real marshall first then you will see what i mean.
if u want a cheap tube, get the valveking, if you want marshall sounds then buy a marshall tone pedal.
price wise no ones gonna want to pay 2 grand for an amp when they can get one that gets that vintage british sound from the peavey windsor anyways. First of all its on youtube, the sound sucks on everything, if you search for a video "peavey windsor head vs vintage marshall head" some people can't even tell the difference and they are hearing it face to face.
im only paying £600 quid for my new JCM 800. And on that video, they real must of done something to dumb down the jcm 800 ALOT. But i could tell straight away when i brought my windsor back into the shop then played it side by side with the 800.
well not everyone is gonna get a deal like you and what is that like 800 us dollars? thats still more than the peavey. And when you put an expensive amp next to a great value amp your mindset is gonna change signicantly knowing how much money your throwing away on an amp.
u r kind of a dumb ass not getting that point that dvdpz was trying to get across to you but i do understand wat u mean by if u have the money and the deal right in your face.
He was saying that no1 needs to spend their money on hi end amplifers that are endorsed by proffesions and rockstars. Because he thinks their lying, and evry1 only has to buy the peavey windsor if they want a tube amp cos he thinks it sounds so good.
Ive GOT my jcm800 now, and 2 of the preamp tubes are dead, and it still sounds far better than that peavey windsor i had.
by the way i have played the valeking, and the tone SUCKS! big time. My friend sold it after 5 months and went with a crate combo, now what does that say about valveking?
for only 500 bucks vs 2,000 and you get a great tone and people say it can stand against those overpriced amps and by the way it is plenty loud, so i don't know what you talking about.
all i'm saying is that if you have a chance like this to spend $500 for people that don't have much money, especially with the u.s. economy in the shitter why not go with the peavey windsor? it sound really good, and you know its a great value.
and just cause rockstars don't use these amps doenst mean shit to me. its all on the player what sound he wants and also can afford, but mainly the sound.
if a rockstars played with pink guitars would you do the same? didn't think so.
but you see they get endorsed by certain products and to me some companys make sht products and i dont mean marshall cause they do make high quality products, but with having that name marshall you automaticaly pay a lot more when you could get something similar at 3 or 4 times less the cost wich is the point i'm making.what i think ppl think is if ths amp was slapped with marshall name and the cost was set in the 1,000 to 2,000 mark, ppl would have a difrent mind set, you get what i'm saying?
its like if you pay a lot for an amp your not gonna hope your amp sucks, your gonna hope its good even if it does suck. so theres no sense in paying too much, when you don't have to.
Sounds good, but not for me.

one channel amp. to get a cleanish sound you have to mess with the knobs. You might want to look at the valveking head. has a clean channel.

this guy was using p-90s not emgs so i think you could probably do metal with a weak overdrive pedal

Depends on what you mean by metal.
80's Hair Metal, fuck yes.. Death Metal? .. Maybe, with a distortion pedal.

I had this amp for awhile -for metal I put a tube screamer in front. I got rid of it because it had constant problems.

"if a rockstars played with pink guitars would you do the same"
so basicaly that says if rockstars played ona piece of crap, would I do it aswell.
Well no. Because thats the oposite of the actual situation.
rockstars are playing quality products like marshalls and i want one aswell because i know how good they are.
Trust me, when u realise exactly how good a real good quality amp sounds then it will turn u off low budget amps completely.

i see exactly what ur saying, and ur say it ignorantly.
The components in high quality amps are high quality, your not paying for the name anywhere as near as much as u think.
honestly, just go in the shop and play a real jcm 800. then youll see why evryone isnt buying some budget quality amp.
