@fltrbvr I started listining to roy in 72, he has always been my favorite too. I think his best album was his 4th on polydor, I forget the name of it, it"s not available on cd so my wife found an old album and had a cd made...she's awesome...another good one is called Buch and the Snake Strechers..it is old (60s) bar recordings...later
@keithalan10 The first time I heard Roy was his Second Album, so naturally that's my favorite. Amazing. I thought I had already heard all the greats. It was like discovering plutonium:>) I like Loading Zone alot too. Maybe because Stanley Clarke plays bass on it as well. I was lucky to see Roy twice, meet him briefly once and drank a Heini with the band. I have my list of favorites but Roy is in my top 5. My favorite is Jeff Beck and he says Roy is the best. Go figure.
MERLE WAS SO YOUNG THEN---ANYONE COULD TELL AT THAT TIME THAT HE WAS GOING TO BE GREAT--SO NATURAL--SO DIFFERENT--GOD BLESS MERLE HAGGARD AND HOW HE HAS DONE MORE FOR COUNTRY MUSIC THAN ANYONE--TY BOB FOR SHARING---JOHN
@heymama1 I believe that spank the plank was a reference to the sound the old school country pickers got from a telecaster. It was a combination of speed, Hammer-on and pull-offs and a few other things. Some of them used finger pics . Anyway, once those guys start pickin you just start to grinnin! you just can't help it. Or as The Lovin Spoonfull put it "Well there's 1352 guitar players in Nashville and they can pick more notes than the number of ants on a Tennessee ant hill" :-)
@heymama1 Thanks for the info. I happen to live in Nashville, so I get to see those plank spankers on a regular basis. I saw Roy Buchanan years ago (I didn't know who he was, I was just out and about one night and walked into this small club and caught the last 20 minutes of his set. The entire audience was mesmerized.
Thanks for posting this clip, it's amazing. However, it wasn't filmed at the Blackboard, it's Pat and Charlie's in Ridgecrest, California. There are a couple of pages about filming this in the Buchanan book "American Axe."
This is freaking amazing! Thank you very much. I'm learning Roy Nichols guitar from Doug Seven, and I want to know all about him. This is a missing piece.
Roy Buchanan could play the sap out of the rafters!
second: does anybody know Roy Buchanan's pick up configuration and what amp he was playing through? ( I play tele, I damp down on my right hand to get harmonic notes, but I still have trouble getting any signal as hot as Roy B without sacrificing the biting tele pickup tone to some humbucking pickups.)
Beyond hen cluckin' this is some hen screamin' from Roy Buchanan, all the while keepin' it country. Merle even yodels on the Jimmy Rodgers song, he doesn't always. The second song is a sweet Lefty Frizzell classic.
This is a great post.... I'm a huge fan of both Roy N and Roy B.....

@dalekenjarvis Spanks that plank? I like it. You're right. A tele is like a nice plank of wood with some hot strings.
