To me, it's more of a song about coming of age.Growing up, we're held back by family morals and are turned to a passive state when it comes to conflict. The family is his conscience, and rather than them literally being there, it's more of, "What would my family say/feel if i struck back?" Which is why he waits till he gets the ok from his whole family, just to finally strike back. He realizes that he's not a kid anymore, and finally accepts that he needs to stand up for himself once in a while.

All those people in the room have a connection to the guy; his parents are there, his teacher, brother, even his "crush becoming girlfriend."
