if you do 2 blocks with an empty space in between them, redstone torches on the front and back, and redstone inbetween them going an extra space out and redstone on the blocks, it makes same thing a lot faster.

Kind of useless no we have repeaters. Just place two diagonally and facing away from each other, join them up (remember that the output can connect to horizontal wires), flood the system with a torch, then destroy and replace it with a wire. Add an additional repeater on the end so you can adjust the timing.
