..They're the same thing. He probably just said "soccer" because he was talking to an American. Soccer is the American term for what everyone else knows as "Football" because "Football" is what we call our sport, American Football. So "football" can mean two things, but "soccer" only means one. If he'd said "football" we could wonder if he meant American football or regular football/soccer, but he said soccer, so... he meant futbal/soccer.
