My teacher played this in my class and all the kids were like this SUCKS and I started luaghing and said "You, poor mindless childs, this is by far the best music you will ever hear in your life, SO SHUP UP AND LISTEN AND THROW YOUR RAP CRAP AWAY." they just kinda stared at me and didn't say anything more about how it sucked. In fact. Some of the kids left wanting to listen more to Jimi. I was so proud. ;U;
@TheGreatNighthawker This was not done as a INSULT to American. Jimi loved America, and was extremely proud. He did the whole middle section to sound like bombs, guns, yelling, chaos ect not just about Vietnam but about every war we have been in. He was extremely proud tobe an American. Watch the interview with him on the Dick Cavett show when he is asked about this version of the Star Spangled Banner.
This is pretty good, tho I prefer Whitney Houston's, I did love this one also. Very creative with using the whammy indeed, especially manipulating the guitar to sound like bombs going off, then going back to the song.
Marvin Gaye did a creative one as well with his own style when he performed Star Spangled Banner, it's worth looking into, and by the way Jimi will always be one of the greatest in the history of rock.
I have to admit, I wish America was like the old days again. True, there was no such thing as the 'good days', but there were times known as 'better days'. All you hear in music is about glitter, fashion, who's better than who, and just things that would make a person like me sick. This instrumental could beat any of those mainstream whore's music any day. I proudly stand by my opinion and I don't care what anyone else thinks. I'm in America, I have the freedom of speech. Or at least, I used to.
@ck85 okay you must not know music or rock&roll. So since you don't and can not validate any other reason why the music sucks, go back into your world of no appreciation of art !
Hendrix diden't play the middle because he wanted it to sound like war, like bombs bursting, men fighting, total chaos ect, it was a musical freedom of speech. Who ever calls it crap should be shot on site. Jimi loved America and did this straight from his soul, hell he even served in the 101st Airbourne in the Army in the early 60's.
@tatethompson1234 i agree with your point but "...it was musical freedom of speech. who ever calls it crap should be shot on site." sounds contradicting.
@tatethompson1234 lol, not to take anything away from Jimi, who was awesome, but he kinda goofed off when he was in training and never really did much fighting.
@redbarron718 He diden't do any combat, and also he goofed off so he could get discharged so he could put a band together. He still served tho, still did his duty to his country. John Fogerty also did the same as him. I don't care if any soldier doesen't do combat. My father did 3 combat tours in the 198th 67-70, 3 Purple Hearts and 2 Bronze Stars.. I would be just as proud of him if he diden't see combat. He still served and wore the Uniform.
i dont know if i should hail satan during this whole thing or just put my right hand over my heart. nah, satan would of not be equally promising forwhat jimi is enough to be. i would rather do the rock signals with my hands.
The 'artists' did not admit that "as a fact", you just made that up. There has never been an interview with all the artists that started in the UK in which they all stated that all of their influences came from the US.
Also, for the record, even Jimi Hendricks got his start in the UK.
@Ohesceayar --Plant & Page used blues and R & B in most of their songwriting/arrangements. The Stones got their name from a Muddy Waters song. Clapton and Townshend both said their influences were from the blues,R & B, and rock & roll. The Beatles had a heavy dose of rock & roll influences. Pink Floyd(when they weren't coked out of their minds)used western influences & american pop culture in much of their songwriting. Floyd's chord changes were from drugs, not divine inspiration.
@Ohesceayar --***For the RECORD*** Jimi Hendricks got his start in the US. He may have gotten exposure in the UK,but he got his 'skills' HERE!! This 'plain and simple fact' I'm referring to was confirmed either by the artists themselves(Clapton,Townshend,Jagger/Richards,Lennon/McCartney)by interview,or by a individual bands recording sessions. The proof is the music/lyrics. The proof is in the arrangements. The proof is stamped all over their careers....nuff said.
@kursk39 --...are you kidding me!!! WTF..Zeppelin,the Who,the Stones, pink floyd,Clapton & the Beatles got their 'core' influences from the US! R & B,jazz, gospel, country, rock & roll, and the top 40's. The UK took the best of american pop culture and inserted it into their music. My proof? The artists themselves admitted that plain and simple fact!...nuff said.
@ryanlim2002 Only if you're a n00b. Don't get me wrong, British rock music is great, but to claim that it's the best is nuts. The Beatles were an amazing force, to be sure, and hands down the greatest band in history, but they essentially killed rock n roll, or, rather, transformed/evolved it into something else. Furthermore, one incredible band does not the best country make!
@ryanlim2002 The Stones were imitators of American r&b and rock n roll performers. Good imitators, but horribly unoriginal for a long time (and when they finally became "original", it was largely by riding the coattails of the Beatles). But hey, who cares which "country" is the best, right?
@guitarpop Some amazing music has come from that big country over in the West and that little island further into the East, with much crossover and influence in both directions. So-called British music wouldn't exist without the U.S. and American music could very well have stagnated on for a decade without the wonderful ideas brought to it by the U.K.
@guitarpop Depends also what you consider US. Rock music was born like a plague of rats, or that is how it was seen originally by americans, just like jazz was seen by germans. Rock did grow in great part in US but not because US wanted, it wanted it out, it wanted the whole black culture out. So dont point it out like if it was something to be proud because back then it was not. Only until it was 'whitenized' was when US started appearing proud of such music. Shame..
@omgtkseth Actually, rock n roll was still poorly viewed even when played by white musicians. It wasn't respected in the mainstream until it had been completely watered down by the likes of teen idols, though, by then, you could argue that it was a completely different genre. Don't point it out like if it was something to be proud? Huh? You don't really have a valid point (and your English needs work, amigo).
@omgtkseth P.S. "The whole black culture" as you put it has been one of the driving forces within American popular culture since the beginning of the 20th century. Also, jazz was quite popular in Germany until the arrival of the Nazis to power, when it began to be deemed as "degenerate". Additionally, I don't see where anyone said anything about the nation as a whole being proud of rock n roll music at the time.
@guitarpop Some amazing music has come from that big country over in the West and that little island further into the East, with much crossover and influence in both directions. So-called British music wouldn't exist without the U.S. and American music could very well have stagnated on for a decade without the wonderful ideas brought to it by the U.K.
@ToxicTurquoise454 Well, excuse the FUCK out of the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and countless others. The U.S. did create Jimi Hendrix, Aerosmith, Guns N' Roses and many other good bands, but by no means ALL of them.
Was flippin' through the channels the other day and noticed an ad for a live lil'wayne concert in the ad this song was used so looks some "musician" and all his aren't getting into heaven cause YOU DON'T MESS WITH GOD'S GUITAR INSTRUCTOR!!!
I'm not gonna argue who the best guitarist is. I'm just gonna say they all are fucking amazing, Jimi Hendrix, Dimebag Darrel, Eddie Van Halen, all of them gave us so much music, I can't hate on any of them.
Jimi, I never knew you personally, only your legacy. But you are missed, brother, we could use your music in today's hard times. Thank you for sending Mr. Kravitz in your place, though.
I'm not sure everybody understands how brave this was.
Only 5yrs before this event people of color were not even allowed to vote in America (but the first to get drafted to Vietnam). After he played this, there were campaigns to get Jimi Hendrix BANNED from ever playing in America again (the political RIGHT saw this as an attack on the flag and the nation). This was a musical incendiary bomb. He always said when he arrived in England in 1966 he felt at home, it's a shame he had to die there.
@DarkDeadSanta Great comment, hypocrisy in practice. Poor black people of USA, and still they are first only on NBA draft and war. Greetings from Serbia.
@DarkDeadSanta The flag burning LEFT didn't like that he played it either. To them, the Star Spangled Banner represented oppression, Vietnam, etc. Billy Cox has said that they caught alot of heat from people back stage at Woodstock. If you watch the film, the crowd didn't seem too jazzed about the song. I'll agree that it took some guts to play it.
@DarkDeadSanta white people, yall not even white you know that? yall just not black anymore. you got a mama thats mama to all your mamas thats black as coal remember that
@DarkDeadSanta Blacks couldn't vote? Seriously? True, there were some states that had measures in place to try and limit black participation in voting, but they could vote.
when a reporter asked about his thoughts on the criticism of this and the hate mail from him playing this song,he answerd.why would it be offensive,i thought it was beautiful *crowd apploused*
this is the only reason i still say i like america... rock and roll if you said jimi hendrix ruined the star spangled banner then i would love to meet your stupidness in the parking lot
my friend in school said when he heard this (in class we were doing the vietnam era's music in social studies, awsome teacher) he felt comfused... aperently his mind isnt capable of expanding and understand jimi hendrix's amazingness

@DarkDeadSanta Yeah, this and Machine Gun were Heavy at the time. I have to agree with you. Very brave especially for a shy person such as himself.

@DarkDeadSanta Blacks couldn't vote? Seriously? True, there were some states that had measures in place to try and limit black participation in voting, but they could vote.

Doesn't anyone get it!! He is mocking the Star spangled banner, at a time whwn it was well deserved. Listen to the war machines and bombs going off.
RIP Jimi

By any change, do you like Justin Beiber music?
