And the COSTUME itself is more THAI then it is KHMER if people are arguing, because the beautiful apsaras on Angkor Wat, who are wearing the court costume of ancient khmer are not wearing what these characters are wearing, whcih is more Siamese, but with a Khmer rendition to it, as all cultures in mainland southeast Asia have. Its what is called a shared cultural heritage. There will be similarities and differences, but its ours together. I'm a Thai who enjoys Thai and Khmer theater alike.

@denseone agreed!! with the costume. im khmer myself and from the history yes..if siam didn't sack angkor and didn't take the royal dance troupe the costume wouldn't have been like this. but the question is the way both country dance. that is unknown to all of us but it is no problem both country have beautiful and similar culture.

I'm not sure why people are arguing about whether this is Thai or Khmer. History already tells us that the Siamese Court stole the entire court troupe from the Khmer empire when Siam defeated Khmer. the Siamese took it because they admired the culture of the Khmers...and if you look at the Siamese court, ancient khmer traditions have been adopted and adapted. Likewise, part of the Khmer tradition survived the Khmer Rouge because of the tradition in the Thai Court.

This dance was originated from Thailand when one of HRH princess of Siam (era of King Rama III) migrated to Cambodian, she brought dance performers to Cambodia and established the theatre there. It became one of national performances in Cambodia since ever.

All Khmer clacial dances are unique, and beautiful. They are totally different from the Thai clasical dances. Khmer clasical dances are more gentle, and soft. Their movement also slower then Thai. That's what separted us from the Thai culture and tradition. Not only that, Khmer costume , make up, and caractor are also totally different from Thai.
