oops, I mean, this song is from the Seventh Star album, and it was Glenn Hughes , the bassist from Deep Purple, singing on it, not Ray. But Ray sounds just like Glenn on this, he sings it amazingly well.
For me, Glenn Hughes sounds like a cat with a tail stuck in the door. Ray is clear and high and easy understandable. Ray could sing the phone book and it'd be likable, just a natural gift.
Glenn Hughes did a fantastic job in the studio, but I didn´t like his live singing, or at least how he sounded in the videos. This singer (whom I didn´t know of till now) was great, as far as I can see ( and he has a more appropriate look for the band - Hughes's was awful!) I´ve read Gillen´s death, what a shame!!!!
@leppardsnake Well. yeah. mate, I know about that.... Now when it comes down to taste I guess Gillen would have fitted the Seventh Star album style better.... though boths vocals are great!

well.. I dont agree with that, but gillen sure was great and maybe it was more appropriate for him to sing due to hughes' condition at the time though.
@leppardsnake well yes, I don´t mean Hughes is bad, NEVER, I just guess Gillen ´s voiice made the song there sound better... regardless Glenn´s condition at the time.
I own a audio bootleg of this gig, and he was simply ... awesome
Both on Dio's and Ozzy's songs ... it's such a shame that a talented singer like him couldn't achieve what he deserved ... Badlands album nowadawys are really rare ...
that's okay he will be resurrected and will have a shot at eternal life and using his talents to the full on a paradise earth. I studied voice with Ray's teacher and know what you mean by unrecognized talent.
I've heard quite a bit of Ray's period with BS throu YouTube, but never actually seen anything of RG in Sabbath before. So THANK YOU for this, & isn't RG such an amazing singer? what a waste! R.I.P Ray Gillen
@angelpriest I've got a bootleg version of the demos that sound just as good as the remastered version that was just released with the Eternal Idol Deluxe Edition.
@angelpriest Wow so they made 2 versions of eternal idol. I have a copy on cassette and Tony Martin is the singer. I will have to look for the other version I dig Ray Gillen's vocals and was a big fan of him with Jake E Lee in Badlands.
Who is the bass player in this gig? Looks like what appears to be Dave Spitz (Dan Spitz from Anthrax's brother). I didn't know he actually played live for them though...
Hughes recorded this and Ray took over when he left.. Seventh Star.... Great singer! tony harnell zak stevens joe lynn turner and jeff scott soto why do the great die eh!
It fit really well into that timeline. I saw this band live at Hammersmith in 86 and also Ozzy with Jake E Lee in the same year. As well as Dio... you know what this was possibly the most magical gigs of the lot of them.... this video doesn't quite capture the real deal. While I wanted to see Glenn Hughes singing that night, we walked out thinking Ray Gillen had a fantastic voice... unfortunately he is no longer alive... at least I got to see him sing
Dio was killer with Sabbath, Jake was killer with Ozzy, have you heard Gillen do Heaven and Hell live? It's like Ray could do anything, Jake could do anything. Badlands had to happen, even though it seemed to ruin both of them. They were like two atoms crashing at the speed of light. A super nova that left a black hole and a new galaxy.
Hey, I found the Hammersmith stuff with Gillen and Sabbath. I get it now, wow, that must have been something. Obviously... it still rips 20 years later.

Just got (today) a copy of Eternal with Gillen on the mic. Great stuff, saw him on the tour in 1986 in Portland Maine. WASP was the opener, great show.
Gillen, Hughes all Recycled JLT like vocalists..No true heart for the theme of band that reflects darkness the way Sabbath reflects the blackest depths of hell...Better leave those things of the night to Dio and Ozzy.
Seventh Star was my favorite album 20 years ago and is still in the top five all time favs for me... Seventh Star album was pretty much the album that got me to pick up a bass guitar and guitar. Iommi is my favorite guitarist and Geezer and Dave Spits are two of the main reasons I started with bass.
i have the eternal idol demo's, and they are wicked as hell, its too bad he didnt stay with them, i would have loved to heard what else he could have done with them
I wasn't aware that Ray had done any live Sabbath shows. From what I remember, he and Tony had done some demos (which ended up being re-recorded with Tony Martin's vocals and released as the Eternal Idol album) but really had no other committed band members. Ray got tired of waiting around to complete the album and start touring so he split and ultimately hooked up with Jake E. Lee in Badlands.
Ray took over for Glenn Hughes on the 'Seventh Star' tour. Then he did the 'Eternal Idol' demos but left after he got into it with the producer. He had met Jake in London and gotten his number and called him to hook up post-Sabbath. But Jake wouldn't return his calls until Ray's mom called and told him it would be nice if he talked to her son. That's how Badlands got started. ;-)
I know Geezer was not in the band the same with Ray. I was just stating a general fact about Geezer and Tony being difficult due to other past occurances with other singers, members etc.
Yes, I would not be surprised if Ray was fed up with Sabbath. Ray was a very good guy and Tony and Geezer don't seem like the easiest to get along with.
my correction to angelpriest. I should have stated Ray did not record on any released albums, but yes he did record demos for the Eternal Idol. Tony was not impressed with Ray's writing skills that why it did not work out. I saw Ray w/Badlands here in Boston back in 89 and he was an amazing as well as the rest of the band. One the worlds best. RIP
I had heard an another version of that story. That Ray fed up with Sabbath generally and he, on his own decision, left the band. I personally believe that his vocals were better for the eternal idol. Especially "glory ride" is a killer!
Ray did not record any albums with Sabbath. Apparently during the recording of the Eternal Idol album, Ray and Tony got into a disagreement. So Ray took the first flight out of England taking drummer Eric Singer and then they formed Badlands with Jake E. Lee late 87 early 88. Tony Martin replaced Gillen for the recording.
Black Sabbath is a Legend and we love them. Everyone should listen to them. They are one of our biggest influences. Our band Amaggot Bordir owes alot to them. We just added a new video today on my profile if anyone wants to hear something new and heavily influenced by Sabbath.
Midnight... something don't feel right! I dig Hughes, but I wish it was Gillen on the Seventh Star LP. I still listen to badlands and the seventh star damn near daily... spitz was/is one of my favorite bass players and Ray with Jake... bad ass.
It's kind of cool the angle and the quality of this thing is so bad and it's all shaky. It's like a flash back to the 80s. Sounds like when you got to a show after it started before you opened the doors to go in. Dudes I'm flashing back... Pass me the krell- give me the vodka.. R.I.P Ray Gillen the best
I later ran into him on a bus of all places in Cliffside Pk.N.J. He was just back from the Sabbath gig,& was probably setting up Badlands with Jake.Great down to earth guy.Remembered me like it was yesterday. He had his feet on the ground.
I saw Ray w/Rondinelli at the Ritz,NY;at La'Mours' in Brooklyn,NY.And in a club in Spring Valley,NY.He was the only singer besides maybe Geoff Tate that could sound like the records live.Unbelievable talent so close yet so far.
Who are we kidding my friends? Sabbath was CREATED for Ray Gillen out of this milky mind-wave soup we call our existence. Sabbath was but one expression of Rays brilliance as an artist!!!-- Badlands was Jake E. Lee's chance to finally work with someone who was as talented as he was a guitar player. Can anyone hear how easy Ray hits those notes even when Compared to Ronnie James Dio? Put on your thinking caps my friends.
I thought I was the only one who knew about Ray. What an amazing singer. I have all the Badlands albums and the Gillan Years bootleg. Too bad the Eternal Idol he recorded isn't available. The bootleg only has a few songs with pood sound quality. Danger Zone's a great song, the riff and the lyrics...awesome. Long live Sabbath...ALL OF IT!!! P.S. I hate that Ozzy or Dio dispute, my favorite Sabbath member has always been......Mr. Tony Iommi.
Este Tío debia haber seguido en Sabbath y no aventurarse en BADLANDS, que pena que haya muerto, la version de HUGHES era increible, pero RAY de4mostro que se puede superar al maestro
...and there's little to choose between the two versions. The Eternal Idol is to me, the least satisfying of all Sabbath albums. It's a lackluster set of songs,(not the fault of either singer). The Tony Martin albums that cane afterwards were much better especialy his last two "Cross Purposes" and "Forbidden"
Ray Gillen recorded the Eternal Idol album then left the band. Tony Iommi didn't want to tour an album with a different singer than was on the record again (as he'd ended up doing with "Seventh Star". So he re-recorded the album with Tony Martin. The Ray Gillen version can be heard on the "Eternal Demo" bootleg. Truth be told Gillen and Martin sing it much the same...
The 2 best Sabb albums...7th Star and the Eternal Demo with Ray! Ray quit cuz Tony told him that anything he wrote with Sabbath is Sabbath property, so he said "fuck off".
Ray took over on tour for Glenn on the seventh sign. Then recorded eternal idol but left the band for business reasons and hooked with Jake and then brought in Eric after he quit sabbath to form Badlands, Tony Martin the rerecorded eternal idol. There are the bootlegs of the Ray demos out there.
Wow, I would love to here those. The music on Eternal Idol, I always thousht, didn't sound like it was written with Martin's singing in mind, this makes total sense to me now... thnx
a perfect line up Tony Iommi (guitar) Joe Lynn Turner(vocal) glenn hughes (basguitar/backvocal) bobby rondinelli (drums) and geoff Nicholls on (keyboard)
I think that Ray Gillen recorded eternal idol and not headless cross, and i am saying that cause i have this demo recording. also ray replaced glenn hughes cause glenn f***cked up the old songs. And this is true if you get a bootleg from that tour...(heaven and hell sucks with glenn....but i guess this was Iommi's fault cause Glenn's voice suits in the style of the seventh star songs...)
PS "Danger Zone" was from "Seventh Star" (Glenn Hughes vocals) Ray replaced Glenn when Glenn was no longer on the Seventh Star tour- Glenn and Ray are both great... badlands released two strong albums- the second less succesful but more talented- Badlands is cool cause Ray played with sabbath and Jake w/ Ozzy.... they were more "rock" and not as "metal"
some or few know that ray gillen recorded the original"Headless Cross" album- i'm looking for a copy- but b4 it was released ray left to join Badlands w/ Jake E. Lee (Ozzy)- Eric Singer was on their 1st album... anyway Tony Martin came in and re-did the headless cross album...
I think that Ray Gillen recorded eternal idol and not headless cross, and i am saying that cause i have this demo recording. also ray replaced glenn hughes cause glenn f***cked up the old songs. ...and there's little to choose between the two versions.

The music on Eternal Idol, I always thousht, didn't sound like it was written with Martin's singing in mind, this makes total sense to me now... thnx
