That "last witness" was Bill Hickman following behind in Jimmy's '55 Ford wagon. Sanford Roth was travelling with Hickman and photographed the crash scene. FYI , Bill Hickman was called Big Bastard by Dean. Guess who was Little Bastard? Bill Hickman stared in Bullit with Steve McQueen; he's the big guy driving the black Charger.

my fascination with james dean only recently commenced but i'm already completely obsessed with him-what a legend he was.
he had such a special and unique aura about him.
his death was so tragic.

It makes me sad when think about the way James(Jimmy)Dean died. And it makes me even sadder to know that all the people who knew him or witnessed this tragedy on that day are either dead or very old. If he had lived Jimmy would be 80 years old. The only person I know who's still alive is his best friend William Bast. @fishbackrobert I don't know what photos you've been looking at, but all the photos I've ever seen show the left front of the Spyder as the impact point. The left front is demolished, and you can still see the unbroken right headlight.

I've read in many accounts that the crash was so bad that Dean ended up appearing as if he was in the passenger seat!
This could make sense you know, drivers usually tag on long journeys so it's not as unlikely a theory as it might at first seem as this drive was over four hours long.
Having said that, it's doubtful, Weutherich was thrown from the car and Dean would have taken the full brunt of the crash as he was driving, just thinking and typing out loud here, but who knows ;)
Rolf originally said he heard Dean's last words. Later,he said that he was asleep at the time of impact. He went on to try to kill himself twice and his wife once. Whatever really happened sure tore him up. One was wearing plaid,one was wearing white. I would think that the witnesses never forgot that moment. Maybe they are correct.... maybe not. Only God knows. Why get so upset about it? As for the pedals,stranger things happen all the time in tornados and extreme vehicular collisions.
Dean's passenger never gave an interview about the crash until just before his own death I believe. And Turnipseed was pratically a hermit for the rest of his life. I think some unfairly blamed him for Dean's death. Being involved in the death of an icon must have been a heavy burden for Turnipseed.

I don't know what to believe anymore. Reports say that James' feet were tangled in the pedals, which would place him as the driver... But the way I see it, the Porshe's driver side hit the sedan, so in my perspective it makes sense that Jimmy was still in the car and Ralph wasn't.... because the impact at the driver's side would pretty much trap the driver in the crumpled reckage... and whoever was in the passenger seat would be ejected (as was Weutherich)..
I don't believe in conspiracy theories, but it's not THAT far fetched for Weutherich to have lied about Dean driving. Would you want to admit that YOU were the one driving in the crash that killed James Dean? Lots of people would or have lied about things in cases of someones death even if the person killed wasn't famous.

Well, Dean's car was cursed---its was based on steel that was part of the car that Duke Ferdinand drove in and was killed in that started WWI--When Dean saw the car and had to have it his fate was sealed. The other driver is now gone, so maybe Dean an he are talking about who was to blame in the next world.

I know the 550 car very well. It would be very easy in low light conditions to mistake the front of the car for the rear. A severly crashed 550 may confuse a back country cop as the engine is in the rear also. The steering wheel would give it away a bit I know, however, remember this was a very rare car on the road at the time, and cops were basically high school drop-outs, or bozos at the time. It is indeed a very fun car to drive hard.

I vistited the site of the crash, it is an abandoned strip of highway. The new highway 46 runs along it. The site has been closed since the late 50's and there are old bottles and cans and stuff. the site is exactly the same as it was when it happened.

James Dean was held captive in the cockpit as his body was thrown to the right side passenger door. The Witness Don Dooley got mixed up as the Spyder's lifted off the ground and spiraled counter-clock-wise. I should have added that Turnupseed was using the rest room when the radio report came on. This little-known story emerged when Kymes was interviewed by a local paper, on the 40th anniversary of the crash, in 1995
Donald Turnupseed sustained a minor cut to the bridge of his nose, and claimed that he never saw Dean, despite two sets of skid marks that proved he had. He then had to hitch home, and was picked up by one Blackie Kymes. They stopped at a diner, where Kymes heard the radio report announcing Dean's death. He decided not to tell Turnupseed, for fear of upsetting him further, and drove him back to his Tulare home.
Fact, yes, Turnupseed caused the accident by turning off the main road into the path of Dean's Porsche. Who drove the Porsche? Well, does it really matter? Turnupseed caused the accident and that's the end of it. May they all rest in peace.

It was edited to meet youtube sub-10' requirements, earlier this year.That interview with Don Dooley still chills me. If you see how much dirt the open hood of the Spyder scooped up, it's probable that as it careened to rest near the phone pole, some of the dirt that was thrown up did land on his face,who knows.Never have been able to reconsile Rolf's position on the ground,to where the Spyder came to rest particularly if as some say he was thrown from the car on impact.
My grandfather was a witness to the crash. Actaully a couple of minutes after. He surveyed teh crash, and tried to help. He had no bones about it,,, he said the driver was stll in his seat. He was horrrified by the accident. But he realized later that it was the famous actor who had died. He said he heard rumours later that another guy was driving, but he said the driver (james dean) was still in the drivers position.
@xvoy2002 thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, my grandfathers has been deceased for many years. He told me about this when i was about 10, so 40 years ago. I do remember him saying he had no idea who the person was since it was a shocking scene and Dean was messed up from the accident. I believe it was a police officer who told him who was actually dead.

You read about it in the newspapers, but when you witness something like this, it is a severe shock which stays with you. I've heard of several accidents where the driver side received the brunt of the impact, but the passenger was the one that was killed. My cousin was killed in such an accident. of course jimmy was driving. he was on his way to race his brand new & much prized porsche, & had decided last minute to drive the car itself to the race site instead of towing it, as had been originally planned. he made this decision so he could "break in" the engine & get a feel for it in anticipation of racing it. in light of all of this, why would he let someone else drive it? anyone who knows anything about dean knows he'd never settle for being a passenger in that situation.

That "last witness" was Bill Hickman following behind in Jimmy's '55 Ford wagon. Sanford Roth was travelling with Hickman and photographed the crash scene. FYI , Bill Hickman was called Big Bastard by Dean. Guess who was Little Bastard? Bill Hickman stared in Bullit with Steve McQueen; he's the big guy driving the black Charger.

he had such a special and unique aura about him.
his death was so tragic.

If he had lived Jimmy would be 80 years old. The only person I know who's still alive is his best friend William Bast. I've read in many accounts that the crash was so bad that Dean ended up appearing as if he was in the passenger seat!
This could make sense you know, drivers usually tag on long journeys so it's not as unlikely a theory as it might at first seem as this drive was over four hours long.
Having said that, it's doubtful, Weutherich was thrown from the car and Dean would have taken the full brunt of the crash as he was driving, just thinking and typing out loud here, but who knows ;)

I don't know what to believe anymore. Reports say that James' feet were tangled in the pedals, which would place him as the driver... But the way I see it, the Porshe's driver side hit the sedan, so in my perspective it makes sense that Jimmy was still in the car and Ralph wasn't.... because the impact at the driver's side would pretty much trap the driver in the crumpled reckage... and whoever was in the passenger seat would be ejected (as was Weutherich)..

I don't believe in conspiracy theories, but it's not THAT far fetched for Weutherich to have lied about Dean driving. Would you want to admit that YOU were the one driving in the crash that killed James Dean? Lots of people would or have lied about things in cases of someones death even if the person killed wasn't famous.

Turn. made a bad decision--he did indeed see Dean's car--but instead of quickly completely the turn and getting out of harm's way he does the worst possible thing--tries to go in reverse--and presents a wall of steel in the middle of the road. The color of Dean's car, the light, and T.'s bad instincts caused the crash---fatal crash's happen under lighter circumstances.

Well, Dean's car was cursed---its was based on steel that was part of the car that Duke Ferdinand drove in and was killed in that started WWI--When Dean saw the car and had to have it his fate was sealed. It also didn't help that the other driver did the worst of things--made a turn then --then did not complet it. The other driver is now gone, so maybe Dean an he are talking about who was to blame in the next world.

I know the 550 car very well. It would be very easy in low light conditions to mistake the front of the car for the rear. A severly crashed 550 may confuse a back country cop as the engine is in the rear also. The steering wheel would give it away a bit I know, however, remember this was a very rare car on the road at the time, and cops were basically high school drop-outs, or bozos at the time. It is indeed a very fun car to drive hard.

I vistited the site of the crash, it is an abandoned strip of highway. The new highway 46 runs along it. The site has been closed since the late 50's and there are old bottles and cans and stuff. the site is exactly the same as it was when it happened.

Donald Turnupseed sustained a minor cut to the bridge of his nose, and claimed that he never saw Dean, despite two sets of skid marks that proved he had. He then had to hitch home, and was picked up by one Blackie Kymes. They stopped at a diner, where Kymes heard the radio report announcing Dean's death. He decided not to tell Turnupseed, for fear of upsetting him further, and drove him back to his Tulare home.

Fact, yes, Turnupseed caused the accident by turning off the main road into the path of Dean's Porsche. Who drove the Porsche? Well, does it really matter? Turnupseed caused the accident and that's the end of it. May they all rest in peace.

Is that Jimmy on the ground and apparently alive at 4.04 - 4.11 ? What did he actually die from? I had always thought Jimmy died outright but this clip clearly shows him alive and looking at his rescuers. Hmm...?

xvoy2002: James Dean was found slumped over the passenger side. If you check this video, the photo at the crash scene shows a man (possibly Tom Frederick) attending to him, while Rolf Weutherich lies on the ground, on the driver's side.

It was edited to meet youtube sub-10' requirements, earlier this year.That interview with Don Dooley still chills me. There's not an interview about the death of James Dean that can ever compare with it. He saw it all, and felt for the dying Dean's pulse....55 years ago today...

If you see how much dirt the open hood of the Spyder scooped up, it's probable that as it careened to rest near the phone pole, some of the dirt that was thrown up did land on his face,who knows.Never have been able to reconsile Rolf's position on the ground,to where the Spyder came to rest particularly if as some say he was thrown from the car on impact.

My grandfather was a witness to the crash. Actaully a couple of minutes after. He surveyed teh crash, and tried to help. He had no bones about it,,, he said the driver was stll in his seat. He was horrrified by the accident. But he realized later that it was the famous actor who had died. He said he heard rumours later that another guy was driving, but he said the driver (james dean) was still in the drivers position.

@xvoy2002 thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, my grandfathers has been deceased for many years. He told me about this when i was about 10, so 40 years ago. I do remember him saying he had no idea who the person was since it was a shocking scene and Dean was messed up from the accident. I believe it was a police officer who told him who was actually dead.

@PrincessPhoenix83 Thank you for your nice reply. I have personally witnessed two fatal automobile accidents. One, as it occured, and the other several moments after it happened. You read about it in the newspapers, but when you witness something like this, it is a severe shock which stays with you. When you see a person trapped in a car and dead, when you come to help, it is something that reminds you the fragility of life. It is precious. Drive safe.

People should check out the National Geographic show on the crash.Proves pretty effectively that the driver of the Porsche would have been killed instantly,which tends to happen if your head and torso slam into the grill of a 50 Ford at 55 mph.Ergo,James Dean dead,James Dean=driver.Rumors never die.For years people assumed that the photo of Rolf on the ground who at first glance looks like Jimmy,proved that James Dean had been cut in half.

@wolfsburg7208 Of course I don't know, but it can be possible Rolf was driving as well. I've heard of several accidents where the driver side received the brunt of the impact, but the passenger was the one that was killed. My cousin was killed in such an accident. What I don't understand is how Dean's face ended up covered with dirt. If he wasn't thrown from the car how did this happen? Who was driving is a question for the ages now. We will never know. But my instincts say Dean was driving.

022171 - yes, the whole world and his mother knows that Jimmy was driving. But, he'd been driving for 4 hours, and had broken in the car over the previous few nights, as well. Who's to say that he didn't pull over, somewhere in the 28 miles between Blackwell's Corner and Cholame, and let Rolf Weutherich take a turn at the wheel. Remember, the only witnesses to the crash testified that Weutherich was driving. Fact.

of course jimmy was driving. he was on his way to race his brand new & much prized porsche, & had decided last minute to drive the car itself to the race site instead of towing it, as had been originally planned. he made this decision so he could "break in" the engine & get a feel for it in anticipation of racing it. in light of all of this, why would he let someone else drive it? anyone who knows anything about dean knows he'd never settle for being a passenger in that situation.

Who testified that 'James Dean's left foot was wedged between the crushed clutch and the brake pedal upon impact'? Paul Moreno, the Cholame ambulance man that lifted him out of the car, but also rolled him for his change? Also remember, Dean was slumped over the passenger side, and Weutherich was thrown from the car on the driver side. Weutherich went on to try and kill his 4th wife, and died,drunkenly, at the wheel, right before he was due to reveal what really happened in a book deal.
