  • damn thats a monster

  • tailgate down won't help. see the Mythbusters show

  • @schassse See my comment on this about 4 down. Thanks for viewing the video!!

  • @jeffpaulin the weight distribution helps accelerate faster

  • @schassse What they left out was the differentiation of the center of mass with the extra weight of the tailgate extended past the wheelbase.

  • El Camino's are the greatest car/ truck ever. My grandfather's brother owns a farm that has an old Camino waiting to be fixed up.

  • @Dagg215 I hope you are the one to restore the El Camino - when you do post some progress pictures. I would enjoy seeing you and the finished car.

  • A few comments mention the car would run faster with the tail gate up. I have tested this many times and with this car it runs "quicker" and just as fast with the tailgate down. Why? The tailgate weighs about 90 pounds and when lowered it is over the back bumper increasing traction and improving the 60' time about a tenth. I run the same MPH up or down but quicker ET's with the tailgate down. Hope this helps. THanks for viewing the video!! Jeff

  • check out my video. Same car with a Go Pro camera in it.

  • i love those cars if i got my licence i wanna buy this car but its not cheap :(

  • Check.mine out not running as good but still strong

  • I have an 84 dang yhur cool is nicee though mine is getting there its on my channel check.it.out

  • @IIvIIachinima Thanks for viewing and commenting. You car sounds good!

  • auto trans??

  • @1976gmc350 4L80E automatic with computer programable shift rpm and pressure. Nice on the freeway (2400 rpm at 70 mph) with the 3.90 grears. Thanks for viewing the video!

  • you know your faster with the gate up right

  • @deadguy237 Why is that?

  • @jeffpaulin Check out the mythbuster's show on tailgates. The shape of the car creates a vortex in the bed and if you drop the gate it actually adds drag, but on drags I don't think it will be noticeable.

  • @jeffpaulin There was a study done on this, the end result shown that there is less drag against the vehicle with the tailgate up than down. It's weird, but numbers can't lie.

  • Hell ya man I got an 1987 mine runs like a turtle compared to yours

  • man i wish my 77 ran like this

  • @mcgrubs202 Thanks for viewing and commenting! Tell me about your 77.

  • @jeffpaulin its a gmc sprint with straight pipes coming out under the door with a rebuilt 350. needs a new carb and many minor parts though...

  • Thank you for viewing, commenting and sharing about your dad's El Camino. Can you post a picture?

  • My dad had a 70 El Camino SS454 as well... It was metal flake midnight blue... That thing would run!!!

  • can you give me any info on your rear suspension, I didn't see any wheel hop and thats impressive for a elco

  • @esfreerider Stock rear suspension with sway bar & HD springs. Air lift bag in the pass rear coil with 20 lbs air. The frt shocks have the top nut loosened to the last 3 threads & the bump stops have been removed for more lift. My alignment guy says to run a bump stop (smaller) on the upper control arm because the sharp stop of metal to metal could break the upper ball joint. I will be putting one on before going out again. Tanks for viewing the video/posting

  • @5191keith Thanks for viewing the video!! I did change to 3.90 gears and added a L480E trans and got the 3900 pound car in the 11.90's. Very fun to drive. Thank you also for your great comment.

  • how much do them go for

  • @HotStuff7059 Thanks for visiting and commenting on the video. The El Caminos go from around 7k to 35k depending on condition and options.

  • @jeffpaulin thanks alot for ur help

  • Hey, love ur car, I just bought a 1968 el Camino :) tho I just missed out on a '72 SS for $15,800, spewin :( so why drop the tailgate? what's the story there???

  • how much bhp does it make

  • @benjy091 610 at the crank 420 to the back tires. mild street 520 lift cam that quits at 6200 but tons of torque at 2500.

  • what kind of exhaust are you have on it

  • @1976gmc350 2" headers and a 2 1/2" exhaust with Flowmasters

  • Sick Camino!!!......i got a 72 with a 350 thinkin bout droppin in a 396 or a 454....after your video im def leanin more towards the 454....again great CAR!!!!

  • awesome car

  • you have a piece of history. treasure it!

  • @akc121783 Thank you!

  • @jeffpaulin Sr. I truly love your car! It kicks ass!

  • @pedriskitiski90 Thank you!

  • @pedriskitiski90 thanks for watching the video!

  • I'm 17 and I just bought my first car. A 1970 El Camino, with a 383 stroker. I'm glad to own that car and I'm going to completely restore it.

  • @Imakeplanesboom Post some progress pictures - I would like to see your car.

  • @jeffpaulin Yes sir, I will definitely do that.

  • One of the nicest El Camino on youtube.Last year I bought a Cutlass 70.Now I have plans for a 71 Camino.I MUST HAVE ONE!

  • @torelv You will not be sorry - very functional and always in style. With a big block you will always turn heads at car shows too.

  • sweeeeeet ride man!

  • I LIKE i have a 86 camino and a want it just like urs!!! can u help???

  • @thedalailama245 Big block 496 with a 520 lift LS6 cam, 4L80 automatic with a 2500 stall and 3.90 posi. 2" headers and 10 inch slicks help too.

  • @jeffpaulin i shall get started.....

  • About the tailgate I don't know if this applies to the el camino since it is lower than trucks but the engineers designed the tailgate of a truck to create a bubble of air in the truck's bed letting air pass over the trucks bubble and causing less wind resistance, when the tailgate is down there is no bubble of air causing incoming wind to push down on the bed and creating more drag. I have not tested this yet I just read it in one of my engineering books maybe you'd like to test it, just saying

  • @trckster007 I have tested this at the drag races and the El Camino launches harder with the tailgate dropped and runs about 1 1/2 MPH faster with it down. I am not an engineer but I have many runs on the car and it hooks and runs hardest on the top end with the tailgate down.

  • I want an El Camino but as a work truck not a muscle car. It's awesome car and I hope it's still around and functioning for many years to come.

  • @Konformation07 The reason there is a tonneau cover over the bed is because it is also a work truck. I have hauled gravel, car parts, and lumber for home remodels. Part of the reason this truck has survived this many years - dual function.

  • Amazing job Jeff. My name is Jessica and I've had a passion for El Caminos for 15 years (I'm 25 now). I currently own a 1973 350 SS El Camino. I'd love to shake your hand someday. Your car is everything I've dreamed of making mine. My hat's off to you.

  • @fragilevaginal Thanks for the kind words Jessica. I would like to see and hear more about your El Camino.

  • Those Big block chevies sure do have a distinctive sound

  • Hey, i've always loved the 70' El Camino body, but I don't actually know much about the car itself....so might sound kinda dumb, but can you fit a 509 engine in it and how much adjustments do you think have to be made?? I want to buy one one day and have it closer to a 10 sec car with no spray. (thas why i'm thinkin' 509 block instead)

  • @snowmanii A 509 big block will bolt right in. To run low 10's you will need about 14-1 compression OR Nitrous but can be easily done. Good luck and post some pictures/video.

  • Nice car looking foe ideas for my 1984 el camino already finished the motor looking for a transmission

  • @BustaK1 Trans best bets: 700R or a 4L80E either will allow you to run a 3.90 gear and have plenty of low end power along with freeway flying. Let me know which one you chose.and

  • Lol some of the other cars it was up against either beat it, or came very very close.

  • @Gibson299 You are right - however none of them were driven to the race track. The El Camino was. Daily driver car currently running 11:90's @ 113 mph

  • thanks for sharing your baby !! truly awesome car

  • @xxfroobxx Thank you!

  • I have a 70 big block el camino as well. Hope to bring mine up to your level. Car looks and performs great! Nice job.

  • @laststray Thank you - poist some pictures/video. Would enjoy seeing another beast El Camino.

  • Hey Jeff, I have a 1970 El Camino SS 454 as well. It was originaly a 396 car. Anyway I think your ride looks and performs great. I hope to bring mine to that level. You did a great job.

  • @laststray Thanks for viewing the video and kind words.

  • man thats the nicest el camino i have ever seen

  • that kicks ass

  • I'm from oz, and we may have invented the ute but the yanks, made it a monster!!! '70 el camino SS454, absolute monster...

  • @Finnyatpirie Thank you for watching and your kind words.

  • Hi Jeff, Lesley from Canada. Great video, thanks for sharing.

That must be such a rush going down the straight away.

  • @saskprairiegirl Thanks for the kind words!

  • whats the point of dropping the tailgate if you have a cover on the bed anyway

  • @hemicud4 The tailgate weighs about 90 pounds and dropping it helps weight transfer and 60 foot times by moving the center of gravity back a little.

  • @hemicud4 it helps with fuel economy and lets the V-tec engage sooner..

lol! :) j/k i know vtec doesnt roll around for another 25 years and isnt even on american cars..

  • nicest el camino on youtube 5 STARS

  • @uneedalife54 Thanks!

  • I like to see a video of the inside / walk around to see how much of an F car it is. So you didn't actually do anything on your car your self, you had other people rebuild it?

  • @k3llys0t0 I have rebuilt the front and rear suspension, I have done the brakes and rebuilt the motor a few times (I have had the car 30 years). The machine shop that did the machine work is mentioned since I do not have a boring machine or block plane in my garage. A friend owns a trans shop and he did the trans rebuild.; You are right not all my work but I did my best.

  • i saw a 70 ss el camino vintage orange at the lake i was getting free monster truck tickets and i was like screw that i wanna check out the el camino

  • I wish I had an El Camino, or any muscle car for that matter. I had the chance to trade my 74 Chevelle for a 72 SS El Camino, but I wrecked a truck I was driving and needed the Chevelle for work and I missed out on the trade.

It's real sad though that the owner has a bunch of old cars and he's just letting them sit there and rust, it's a crime! T_T

  • Hi, curious how I can tell if my '70 El Camino is a "SS", no eng or trans, but 12 bolt rear end, big block F&R springs, BB eng frame mounts, AC, PDB, PS, PW, PDL, bucket seats, console, setup for auto trans. No interior panels or dash, bought as a bare roller. Had a '69 SS 396, so I know the cars pretty well, I believe this was a real '70 SS 396, but not sure, thanks!!

  • thats a bad ass ride man.

  • BAD..ASS!! I Got a 69 Chevelle Malibu El Camino Its Just SICK Like yours Nice Job On your Ride!!!

  • Thanks!!

Post a picture of yours when you can.

    Would enjoy seeing it.

  • Damn, your're such lucky guy to own a SS El Camino. I wish I could buy an El Camino or Ranchero as my first car.

  • awsome elco. i miss my 71 elco after watching this video.

  • AWESOME CAR looks so much better than those "pimped out" cars with the 24 inch rims. "pimped out" cars ruin this car SOOOO BAD

  • I wish I lived in Cali.

  • nice ride , how much does it weight ? , you need fast xfi .

  • 3900 with me in it

  • i wish i had your car than my 69 el caminl

  • Jeff, I am about to embark on an Elky resto. After restoring a 70 chevelle, I now have a bug to do the a 70 elky. Your video inspires me all the more. Thanks for posting, and awesome runs!!

  • beautiful car man.

  • uh amigo que belleza!

  • @columbiforme Gracias

  • Jeff Paulin, I must commend you. Your Elcam is wholly awesome.

  • Thanks!

  • Death Metal!! I Like that!!!

  • kewl ever thought about sliders?

  • @Yamahadrummer420 I need a little more info to understand your request. Thanks for watching the video.

  • i do not like this year.they started getting round and fat. i am buying a 1981 this week for my first car. i think 66-67 are the best years for el caminos

  • where do you live that you can afford gas to drive it as a daily driver?

  • It is only 6 mile to my work - and no car payment + insurance is cheap.

  • Awesome! I just bough a 1980 El Camino Royal Knight and will be rebuilding it soon. Not for drag racing though =( It will be a a daily vehicle to get back and forth to work in. It's gonna take time and a lot of patience...

  • AWESOME! Brute force and torque ....gotta give credit to what looked liked a 66 396 takin you @ 2:31. Not Hatin....MUCH respecting. FAST is FAST.

  • The 66 was a 502 and trailered

We drove in and drove home.

  • ahhh this is so cool :D

  • my dad has a 1981 el camino royal knight

  • Great car, great video. Props to you for having kept it for so long. I've had my Monte Carlo for 5 days shy of 22 years. It too was my daily driver for most of the first ten years, but only sees summer sunny days now. Brought both my sons home from the hospital in it. They're 19 and 21 now. Three colors, four motors, four trans, all new bushings and such... twice. It's hard to think about getting rid of them, isn't it? Again, very nice job. Good looking car.

  • Thank you!

  • i have one. It's awesome. Head turner haha

  • Beautiful. That's an amazing El Camino!

  • thanks for posting this. an elcamino has always been my dream car. probably not a realistic dream at my age (16) but a dream nonetheless. 5 stars and favorited

  • Thanks for viewing and posting!

  • my grandpa usta truck pull with a 1970 el camino ss 454!

  • I have a '68 El Camino (not an SS). It has a 350 SBC V8 in it. It is an all around cool car, but where I live they are popular. It is like they are a dime a douzin and the 350 engines. The 350's are weak and so boring and they are in every freaking car I turn to look around at. Hahaha, it is so true. Plus, you can buy a running El Camino (65-72 models) for like 2-3k. They must not even have much value. Hell, I think the best time they ever ran stock was 14.1. ( Internet sources).

  • @ 2:43 is that besides the el camino a 65 gto? if it is dam i like em ...they are one my faves too... dam this el camino 454 is clean i like 454's a lot !

  • man that's nice

  • Great car, I have a 68 camino with 454 dual quad for about 800hp, I get parts from ecklers and NPD

  • i am very jealous of your car right now i am 16 with a 1987 monte carlo ss my future plans include a project car 1970 el camino ss 454 if i can find one if i cant it will be a 396...and i will buy another 1986 buick gn or a 86 buick regal t type wh1 both awesome cars...love the camino beautiful..your ride is natural 100% pure beauty on wheels

  • holy crap awsome el comeno!

  • '70 = the best version!

  • Thanks for viewing and posting!! I agree!!

  • I bought one as a modelcar in the same colors !

  • i HAVE A MODEL CAR OF A RED EL CAMINO TOO!

  • damn this shit is slow, 12 sec for a 454 block? plus its automatic!

Granny Shifting, not double clutching like you should have!

  • Glad the video prompted you to post about your knowledge of classic/muscle cars. Tell me about your car or better yet post a video of it drag racing. Thanks!

  • Laughing with Jeff now... and I appreciate the sense of humor as much as I do the car. LOL

  • i have a 1984 el camino with a 1973 corvette engines in it they are truly amazing cars.......beutifull car you got great job

  • Thanks for viewing and posting!

  • how can you afford to daily drive that thing! with a 496 or w/e its stroked out to you have to be getting 8 city 10 highway

sweet car tho man.. its in great shape and im glad you decided to keep it original

  • 6 miles to my work and 6ix miles back

    current gas milage 8 mpg.

but it is fun to drive, paid for and the ins is reasonable.

  • love to see a man who knows wat to do wit a car... im proud of u... lol

  • Thanks for watching the video and posting a nice comment.

  • Does dropping the tail gate give you better time in the 1/8??

  • better 60 foot times with the 90 lb tailgate dropped.

  • nice ridee !

  • Post some pictures or a video - I would like to see your car!

Thanks for posting on my video!

  • Great vid, Jeff. I have a '72 350 El Camino I am restoring. Very motivating to see one already done and running smooth!

  • I use True Connections in Riverside for my restoration parts - they actually know the cars and you will get good info along with good parts. They also have some used hard to find parts at the store. There is an El Camino only store north of LA that also has an excellent customer service attitude. Good Luck with your project!

  • the restore store north of LA, are u talking about the Original Parts Group AKA OPGI.. cus im thinking about restoring my 78 with them.

  • i like 3 cars. 1970 dodge charger R/T 1970 El camino and what i drive 2003 mitsubishi eclipse gts. i want to find an old dodge charger or a el camino that me an my dad can rebuild together. nice car man great job

  • Thank you for posting on my video!

  • my dad has his 75 SS next to the house. It has the 400SBC instead of the 454 (dad said he didn't want to die).

I like your car, and am pretty impressed with a 12.33 time. How much does the car weight do you know?

  • The Car weighs 3700. The 12.33 was with 3.08 gears. After switching to 3.90 gears the car now runs 11.90's at 113.

The El Camino won the pump gas drags at California Speedway May 31, 2009 during the West Coast Big Rig Truck Show and Drags. There was a seperate class for the diesel pickups.

  • Thats incredible i must say.

Me and my father built a 550horse 454 for his truck (video coming soon) that we are gonna put in the Camino. If it runs some happy numbers then we are gonna gut it and put a 572 deluxe in it and turn it into a drag car. When the day comes that we finish, i might make a road trip to race you!!!

  • How is your car coming along? Please post some pictures. Any drag video yet? Thanks for posting on my video.

  • howdy jeff,

yah we are a long ways from getting it ready for the track. Our garage turned into a garbage dump, once its cleaned out, ill roll the camino in and get back to work. Ill have footage of it as soon as possible

  • 11.90's @ 3700lbs?

Thats pretty impressive, showing that the vehicle can carry it's weight well. Do you have any plans to add anything else?

  • THanks for posting this. I bought a 70 elcamino ss that originally had the LS5 in it. Now it has a 350. I got it last year for $2600 as a father/son restoration project; funds are low this year & I need to sell but seeing your video is making me determined to keep it. The 350 is enough for my teenage son anyway and the 454s are really hard to find. Again, thanks man

  • Rebuild and install the 350 - this will make a great project. Keep your eyes open for a 454 that you can also build for a future install. If you get lucky and find a block with matching build date you would really increase the value of the El Camino.

Hemmings and some times E-bay are sources. Good Luck!

  • one wrort how nuch 4 sale ....

  • Not for sale at this time - I tell everyone to show up at my funeral and talk to my kids.

It is worth about 35K ??

    Thanks for asking

  • hahaha, you wont be dying any time soon with that ride by your side :P

really nice car, wish i owned something like that with a big block v8, sadly the biggest thing i have is a 4.3 l v6 in my astro van

  • Love the ride man. The kind of Elco that dreams are made of.

  • Thank you!

  • Hey there I'm Isaac, 19 in college. I own a 1981 El Camino V6 229.

It's all original, and clean. I love my baby, but damn your car is awesome!

I love these cars maybe someday I'll be able to finance and rebuild a classic El Camino. Cheers buddy!

  • Very nice Car. SS certainly could hold their own. Nice to see one restored. Very informational also. Thanks for taking the time to post.

Crazy22L is simply jealous thats all.

7.4 V8, can't beat it. Very nice job.

  • so what state are you in? and do you fix cars up as a hobby or job? im 14 and im looking into rebuilding my friends 1980 camaro and he said he wanted to sell it. and i told him i would buy it. but i need someone to teach me some things about engines. iv got the interior knowledge but the motor kills me.

  • In Orange County Calif

Only work on my cars as a hobby

  • Gotta love red muscle cars

The Dec Hemmings Muscle Car magazine has a feature on this El Camino Check it out.

  • Thank You!

  • Wicked jealous mate, El Camino is my dream car. You runnin' an automatic or manual?

  • Automatic L480E overdrive with a computer controller for shift speed and pressure.

  • I had a 70 acmino a few years ago. I wish I never sold it but I guess as they say, "hind sight is 20/20". Thanks for sharing!

  • what gear u have in this car i had 2:73 in 72 monte carlo 454 running 12:60 at 106 i had maybe 1500$ in hole car

  • The car ran 12:30's with 3.08 and 11.92 with 3.90 gears. It now has a L480E Trans for freeway flying.

  • Post a video of the car at the drags - would love to see your car run down the track.

  • i dont have car anymore but i have my lil truck check it out

  • Dude, the 1970 SS 454 is my favorite car! Glad to see that I'm not alone in that standing.

  • Me too! Thanks!

  • how much do you think a 67 elcamino is worth? its condition is very poor it has rust and is all stock with a paint brush paint job. its pretty crappy. and the people i am buying it from want $2,500 for it and i dont think it is worth that much for its condition.

  • Are you going to buy the car?

If you can do most of the labor to get it right it may be worth it.. If you have to pay someone it could get very expensive. Let me know.

  • droping the rear doesnt really help it creates more drag and less gas mileage

  • Not interested in gas milage. Dropping the 90 lb tailgate improves 60" foot times
