@Thepragmatic123 i taught tai chi at the art/music school on prytania and listened to ellis play and teach in the 80's what a musician he! (and of course his kids)
I don't think he ever heard this version. But the last time I did see my Father, I played it for him. He told me once, this was his favorite song. Don't know why, but I'm thinking of him now.
Harry's a class act ! Saw him @ pensacola civic center many years ago... SUPERB...Saw micheal buble there last year .. what a dissapointment , all he did was drop " F " bombs all night , no class ... buble could take some lessons from Connick, but then why bother , there's only one Harry Connick !!!!!
Without question, this is the IDEAL version - the complete lyrics, a fabulous voice, and best of all, an accompaniment that remembers this song is a reverie, nearly a lullaby. So many versions - even the greats, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford - have too heavy an arrangement. This is brilliant, and I so appreciate you sharing it with us!
It is a great version. The accompanying piano is brilliant. The arrangement is perfect for a little bar on the San Francisco Bay. It is too bad no one writes music like this any more. It is so beautiful.
I would not disagree with arrogantknowitall, nor would I disagree about Harry nor Nat, but what about George Benson? He does a great job! I'm off to find him.
@whistlingtiger He does. Harry is one of the last real musical talents. Brilliantly talented pianist and vocalist. 25 is one of my personal favorite albums of all time.
@JAXMEM I have to disagree. Nat King Cole's version is the best vocal interpretation of the song. To me it has a dreamy quality to it. To each his own though! :)
@pauldav1d actually, he's not accompanying himself on this song. the piano is played by Ellis Marsalis, who was his mentor. not that harry couldn't do an amazing job, but the feel is a little different.
Actually Harry didn't play piano on this. Ellis Marsalis did (feather of Wynton & Branford). I'm not saying Harry couldn't have played it, just the fact is he didn't. TZ
This is my favourite version of the piece... Cole's gorgeous, so perfect. Satchmo's irreverent and punk before punk. But this has Pathos for me like any other. And I've heard a lot.
Ask any serious musician who understands voice with arrangement, they'll tell you this version ranks second only to Cole's version. I love Sinatra but even he didn't have the strong vocals Connick has.
well i just listened to sarahs version and i did not care for it...stylistiacally i def prefer jrs version...also nat was nat KING cole for a reason...i have yet to hear anybody do a song better....and if you watch his old variety show he makes it look so easy....i love harry....but nat is king.....

Really beautifully done. At 2:39 - a nice subtle alteration righteously licensed IMO! I haven't heard a piano/vocal version that can best this one.

I used to sing this into the phone whenever telemarketers would call until they hung up. Very effective practice.

He milks it. Not a good idea with this song - the melody is so complex that you have to control it, or the listener is lost.

He really sounds like Sinatra here. Does he still sing like this?

@whistlingtiger He does. Harry is one of the last real musical talents. Brilliantly talented pianist and vocalist. 25 is one of my personal favorite albums of all time.

Harry has a good version of Stardust, but Nat King Cole sings this and it is just magical almost haunting This is the quintessential perfect song.

WRONG! This version is VERY good, but Mel Torme wins for best version... Still this is very respectable!

@arrogantknowitall I would not disagree about Mel Torme. I think George Benson's up there with one of the best renditions of this song, ever!
