The C.I.A. caused an overthrow of the Iranian government and replaced their leader with the Shah, who turned out to be a brutal dictator. The response was the student revolution that caused the Hostage Crisis and replacing the Shah with Ayatollah Khomeini.

The Shah was installed to prevent Mohammad Mossadegh from coming to power. Mossadegh was an avowed Communist (the same Communist party that the Ayatollahs codemmned in 1979 and later again when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan).
