@xchronox0 Nope,they are automatically use when he uses the huge, undodgeable istant-kill heaven-fall-explosion attack, and from my experience he only uses it once or twice.

You *can* win the battle without any maxed friendships, it's just hard as hell if you don't have doped up yourself and your monsters with Elements and Medicines.

@ZorotheGallade I guess I was just playing underleveled then. Perhaps he just uses it periodically. Either way, I still only needed 3 when I get in-game-drunk. None of the 3 were him actually killing me.
