Most of the important cities like Shanghai and Beijing are not too bad. I mean, I live in Texas and the air in those cities are actually bearable. Those cities have stricter ordinances banning coal plants and factories within a certain proximity of the city.

A lot of cities in the countryside do not have these restrictions in place. Ironically, those places are way more polluted than cities.

How about New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Seatle? Smog there is all over the place also. And Al Gore even said it is his own USA country preventing the passage of law to protect the environment. Hey you should visit Botany in Australia. Residential area with airport near by and major track route. You should see the polution that's on the ground daily from the planes fuel and diesel tracks. Air stings like a barrel of fuel. People and kids living there breathe this. And it's getting worse. Anyone cares for a sunny holiday to Botany Bay?

As a resident in China, I can vouch for the total lack of understanding by local citizens who dump stuff on streets, pollute the supposedly beautiful canals, and I've probably only seen 3 days with blue skies in the last year.

Don't worry. Going Green (developing renewable energy and protecting wild life) is one of the top China government priority. In fact they hire top western green consultant to implement a concept such as William McDonough cradle to cradle.
