I love this piece. Our school put together the advanced symphonic band and the 9th grade concert band together to play this piece. It sounded really good. I played the 1st trumpet part. I love the solo.

Highlands Inter. Band has always had great talent walk through that school but unfortunately they are not pushed to their full potential because of the lack of a teacher. that short thing on top of the podium is not a teacher more like an immature kid. because of the lack of a teacher most of the time in highschool is spent teaching basics and fundamentals that should have been taught in inter. its really sad because this band right here could have sounded so much better
So what is a college doing playing a level 4 high school peice anyway. Of course yall are going to be better because yall have more experience than high school students.
The song is much better knowing the story behind it. Even President Reagan used the words from the poem this is based on, "High Flight," when the space shuttle Challenger exploded. He said 'We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and "slipped the surly bonds of earth" to "touch the face of God."'
for some reason, the camera angle on the conductor's left side is not lining up with the audio. its really annoying with the middle section, since his conducting seems two beats off. the middle camera is fine.
this seems to be one of those pieces that a lot of students play in middle school, high school, or a college group (as i am now). great performance of it.
The one starting on the low C? Lol I love that part. I just played it at a concert tonight. I was more nervous about my vibrato in the solos than the fast runs to be honest.
Go Mr. Iyoki and the Highlands band of old. I'm playing this in ninth grade now and I love how Mr. iyoki always manages to bring it together. I know they made some mistakes, but hey this is only an intermediate band.

definately. i played this in 9th grade. i love it. it's about a WWII pilot named John Gillespie Magee Jr. who wrote a sonnet called "High Flying" and part of the words were "Where never lark no even eagle flew, And, while with silent lifting mind Ive trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God."
they didn't do the tam-tam part when it goes back into 6/8...that makes the song

You must have played a "dumbed down" arrangement of it. The origional score is NOT easy. Not in the slightest. Still, a gorgeous piece.

I can guarantee you that this is not a "dumbed-down" arrangement. This is the original Curnow (grade 5) piece. Mr. Iyoki just prepared us very well.

Lol, nah. It only takes practice with a metronome. Besides, that part isn't the melody; it's supposed to just be pure movement (I Think).

Yea. I play bass clarinet and the middle section is WAY FAST. Slowing it down really puts emphasis on the meaning.
