I agree with the comments about Lytle's technique. It is not the greatest. All I can say is that I grew up near UCSD and so had a chance to hear him perform on numerous occasions and I usually heard great "heart" in what he plays. I realize that excuse is often used for pianists with poor technique, but it's true and he often interests me, which is more than I can say for some with greater technique.
I should also say I don't know him and never took a class from him.
He plays it with freedom, like he's a jazz pianist. The classicals are so rigid, playing exactly on the beat, exactly as the composer directed.....sod that, interpret it.
On a scale of one to 10, I played this just OK at about 8, upon graduation. My prof. woudld not have let me perform it like THIS at my graduation. This man is prof. of piano at UCSD??? The Liszt Sonata is one of the greatest piano pieces ever written. But this rendition, is way below par. the recording sound is not bad at al. The rythm is OK. That is ALL the positive things I can say here.
Don't get angry on me - There is no music in there...It's only sounds like "a bear walking on the moss"...Not even speaking about Liztz. I myself play piano and rather well, BUT I NEVER dare to play anything that is above my technical skill...
I think the sound is bad and too bassy maybe but if you like Liszt u think people would appreciate him and not call him a failure or lack of skill in anyway
Oh forgot to mention just two small pieces from Liszt, like one being the sonata. lol. One of Liszts greatest and most difficult pieces. That might have helped to mention. EXCELLENT pianist. Super clarity, on an extremely bright piano

Not all that impressive actually, but I tip my hat to anyone who goes out and preforms this monster of a piece.
