my grandfather was a gunners mate in the Coast Guard during the vietnam war, proud to have him as a grandfather. next year i'm joining..

this might be a stupid question but do gms get to fire the weapons too? or do they just work on fixing them and train others how to use them?

@blaze007Z It's not a stupid question...the main duties of GM's are weapon maintenance and training, but we do get a lot of trigger time. When teaching a weapon system, how are you supposed to teach them, if you have never shot it? Granted most of the time the guy directly behind the gun may be a BM or SN or whatever, but GM's jump on there too. I was gun crew on a cutter for two years, and shot many a rounds from different guns.

GM's and BM's once in a while we'll get an MK primarily it's the GM who mans the weapons.

haha i took my test in like october of 08, and i leave july of 09. thts the average wait, cuz everyone is trying to go into coast guard so theres a pretty long waiting list. plus i have to wait till i graduate from high school...

Years ago in the Australian Navy they had Quarter-Master Gunner rates which had a similar job description. These days all the weapons systems and small arms are maintained by the Army or civilian contractors.
