hahaha Bernard! You guys recorded the official version at a speed of 90bpm, and steve is playing at 104bpm here in the studio! WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT FROM HIM!?!
they had just returned from cornwall, delayed by traffic, driving 100 miles an hour to arrive just in time at bbc ; the studio was not as expected, they never wore headphones, especially having 4 synths ,emulator ,vocals, bass, drum machine, drums-- all into earphone speaker. bernard had every right to be angry, yet if it is so unprofessional , then why is it so incredible now 27 years later. besides bernard is scorching , absolutely torrid
I bought melodica today only because I really wanted to play this melodica solo by myself. I bought Hohner Melodica Piano/32. Sounds the same - Bernard uses Hohner too.
Fun fact: This was broadcast on BBC2 on a one off segment called 'rock around the clock' and new order were the last band on. Not sure if it was live or not but it went on til the early hours of the morning at a time when TV (in the uk anyway) closed down at about midnight and just showed a test pattern or nothing at all til breakfast tv came on or, in the case of bbc2, not til about noon. Ahhh facts :)
Sumner telling Morris to speed up, shows just how little feel he had for the music. Can you honestly imagine Ian Curtis doing that? If anything, he'd have been telling him to slow down!
@MisAnnThorpe Well I'm thankful for the amazing stuff they did from 81-85, regardless of the weaker stuff that followed. Movement, Everything's Gone Green, Cries & Whispers, Temptation, Your Silent Face, Blue Monday, Lonesome Tonight, Sunrise, The Perfect Kiss, even Regret - all these equal or even better anything by Joy Division in my opinion.
@chrisnoaro1 Well, you've mentioned most of the New Order tracks I rate, minus Ecstasy from PC&L. I used to rate Low life very highly but listening again recently for the first time in many years, I'd say it rated no more than a 6/10. Don't think they ever made an album anywhere near as good as Closer. Movement is their best LP & I would say it's no coincidence that it sounds more like Joy Division than New Order. I can't even begin to describe how execrable I think Shellshock is!
@MisAnnThorpe I got into New Order before JD which I think is why Movement meant so much to me, though I think Closer and all JD's stuff is amazing too. Movement's intensity coupled with primitive drum machines and synth effects really won me over as a synth kid and it was probably the first album that led me into a more guitar-oriented sound. Ecstasy cool track, good to hear your views, now go listen to the 10 minute version of Shellshock! Actually I reckon State Of The Nation is worse...
@chrisnoaro1 Yeah, that's a fair point about State of the nation. But I've always thought Shellshock sounds like a Stock Aitken & Waterman reject! It's just a complete mess with squelchy synth brass stabs & like you say that miserable bass line. I remember a friend lending me Brotherhood. I played it over and over again, thinking I was missing something & that it must be a slow burner. Eventually I realised it was just vacuous. Scritti Politti's Provision was another hugely disappointing record.
@MisAnnThorpe I found all their albums after Low Life disappointing apart from Get Ready which I thought was pretty good, also the Here To Stay single I really liked. Don't know very much Scritti, but been reading about them in "Rip It Up And Start Again" - really good book about postpunk, worth getting if you haven't heard of it.
@chrisnoaro1 Scritti are quite an interesting band. They started out a scratchy post punk guitar band. By the time of their 2nd & biggest LP; Cupid & Psyche 85, their sound was completely unrecognisable. Some will tell you it's one of the most immaculately polished records ever. Many early Scritti fans felt utterly betrayed by it & consider it an over produced turd of an album! The most recent album White bread black beer, (2006) is in my opinion possibly the best, an unexpected return to form.
@MisAnnThorpe If you've ever performed in a band you'll know that when your adrenalin is pumping and your a bit nervous everything seems impossibly slow.
@louisorleans Stop making excuses for Sumner. It's amphetamine or coke that's pumping through his veins and again I ask; could you imagine Ian Curtis telling Morris to play faster regardless of the adrenaline or anything else for that matter?
@louisorleans In that case I can only say that you have a very vivid imagination. Could you perchance also imagine Ian Curtis would have been well up for "World in motion" ?! I suspect you could.
@MisAnnThorpe Ian's dead mate. You seem to live in a world of pointless hypothosis. If.... Ian Curtis had not left Iain Gray in the lurch maybe Joy Division would probably never have existed, maybe without Barney the name and most of the good ideas wouldn't have happened. But who the hell knows about 'what ifs like' that. I do have a very vivid imagination, keeps me free.
@louisorleans Maybe I didn't make myself clear enough. When I asked if you could imagine Curtis telling Morris to speed up, I was referring specifically to "In a lonely place." As I said before, elsewhere; the answer is no and if anything he'd have been telling him to play slower! The whole feel of this track is funereal and it's pretty much a case of the slower the better. As a much teacher I would have hoped you wouldn't need this explained to you.
@louisorleans I wouldn't describe myself as dictatorial but I do absolutely hate people disagreeing with me. Especially when I'm right and I'm always right! Btw, I have "performed" in front of an audience and I would hazard a guess that it was a little bigger than those present when this was recorded. Chances are I was probably every bit as "adrenalized" as Mr Albrecht. It didn't lead to me behaving like a bigger **** than I already am though!
@louisorleans I'd like to say at this point that I'm not precious regarding Joy Division and/ or Ian Curtis. I feel that Joy Division were a good but hugely overrated band with an exceptionally talented lyricist, whose status has been vastly inflated due to Curtis's tragic suicide. Of course it's impossible to say what direction Curtis would have taken had he lived. I do, however think it a very safe assumption to make, to say that he'd have wanted nothing to do with "Turd in motion"!
@MisAnnThorpe Brotherhood I agree is an awful album, 2 good tracks - Angel Dust & All Day Long. I hated Shellshock when it first came out, but then I developed a sense of humour. It's a real tour de force of sequenced piano, jittery drum beats & over-the-top pop vocals. The lamest thing on the whole track is Hook's inane bass playing. Movement is JD/NO's greatest album and New Order 81/82 is significantly better in my opinion than much of what JD produced.
I find this video rather homo-erotic, taking into account Barney's movements while saying faster, "gay sperm" written on the amp, and the fact that they are all in their underwear.
For some reason I don't find this depressing at all. Particularly this version. Almost reminds me of Radiohead's Optimistic. Anybody know any other songs with this vibe? Big drums, synth, and exotic chords?
he is a fucking great drummer - transmission, ceremony i think best examples and atrocity exhibition and ofcourse shes lost control - i think he set off a trend 8-) coz lodads of post punk drummers sound like that even mr birghtside guy is like that with the cymbals - i think steve said he like lust for life by iggys drums - that was legendary with the cymbals but i think best drums of all time is krautrock stuff from like neu! with hallo gallo
"its a bit faster than this.." no its not, jesus, I think he was on coke and just wanted the keyboard parts to sound like more of a dance groove that they obviously were starting to love..its a dark song though it should be much slower than this... oh well, melodica rules
That was just kind of a joke since Metallica sueda bunch of their fans who downloaded their music illegally from Napster a number of years back, even though they were already filthy rich at that point in their careers.
They put a lot of money into tracing IP addresses of people. The same way police catch people downloading child porn... but if you only happen download from somebody who's really watching for illegal music downloads then you might be in trouble, the chances are slim at getting caught and you'll likely just get a stern warning not a court issue. I'm also sure there were some Napster records of IP addresses and their activities that Metallica was able to go look at.
the original is the deepest song ive ever heard. a man nearing his end. still searching for the full recording , can only find the half versions on here
do you mean the rough recording with Ian? I don't believe there is a full version/a version with Ian singing the third verse. It's on the Heart and Soul boxset but its the same cut version you can find everywhere else. It was from an old tape that (I think) Hook found, they don't remember when it was recorded, they think possibly days before Ian's death... It sounds to me like the tape they recorded on ran out before they finished playing the song, which is too bad...
Oh, and Joy Division's original 1981 studio version is MUCH slower than this. Roughly the same speed as Joy Division's. The full versions of both appear to be on Myspace's music, go check them out. Yes, there appears to be a finished version of Joy Divsion's version.
Where is this supposed finished JD version? I would think it would have been on the boxset instead of the 2 and a half minute one that everyone can easily find... If there's a full JD version I'd love to find it! I had no luck on myspace. This version is wayyy too fast :/
Unfortunately, Myspace removed the completed Joy Division version a while ago. You can see it, but there's no option to play it. New Order's original version is actually the longest and slowest at nearly 6:20 in length. I hate how bands always have to speed up live versions. The finished Joy Division version was about 5:50 seconds. I can kick myself for not adding it to my play list in time.
bloody hell.. do you know anything about when it was recorded? is it the same recording as on the boxset and internet? perhaps it wasnt that the tape ran out, maybe there's some other reason it's cut? I think the JD version is slower or roughly the same tempo, it's just shorter cause the NO version has more instrumental action at the end. But either way, you say there's a full JD version that needs to resurface! Why would myspace take it down? bastards.
I'd have to say that New Order's Original 1981 Studio Version that appears on "Substance" has to be close to the Original Joy Division version in depth & gloom. Any live or subsequent version, such as this one, in my opinion, do not touch those 2. Each one is superior in it's own way. But as for these live versions, they are good too. Just not like the studio firsts of either band.
wow just believe in yourself no matter how much you suck, never look back and you too can be a millionaire rock star who travels the world and playing to a fleet of adoring fans.
it's not hard to figure out, he doesn't play any sharps/flats so it's just a matter of dicking around in C major, you can see his hand positioning pretty well at about 1:15.. He plays part of the keyboard melody (A, G, F, D) then he plays C and E together, and D and F together (diads, I dont think his left hand is completing the chord its just holding the melodica) and I think he does some variations throughout the song, but it's pretty easy and fun to play. Melodica rules, glad you're into it!
The version with Ian, even though it's poor quality, has so much more depth and emotion than this. However, this is a really good version. I like it slower.
I remember watching this at the time and thinking Steve IS playing it at the right speed, Steve deserves a medal for not going over & chinning him. Steve is the best musician in the band by miles. Bernard's either on something or hungover, all over the place. Still the best thing ever on Rock around the clock though, they all have that "they're all watching at us" expression like they think it's about to fall apart. Excellent stuff.
why does the speaker say gay sperm on it, why is Bernard telling an experienced drummer what to do, and why is he playing this with a Melodica... therefore this song is great.
wow - totally awesome, i remember vividly watching this live back in 84, was it a peel session?, either way, i always remember the lead singer getting pissed about the tempo, and the drummer just ignoring him, lol. awesome video, youtube rocks!
OK Steve is playing those fills like the proverbial b***ard. Is this the Gabba version? I don't think it is that fast Sumner you mentalist. Great Song, Great Band.
fantastic! poor Steve - that was a hot day too. And what are those shorts all about Bernard? Too many aerobic nights at teh Funhouse?! Brilliant stuff. Cheers Adz
Steve truly is the "human drum machine". You can even adjust his tempo-"faster, Steve, faster" lol

Hmm... anyone know how I could get those melodica chords/tabs/whatever? Thanks.
And also, the song is great. New Order did a good job with this. But I must say, the song is better with Ians vocals.
jaisinator 3 years ago
it's not hard to figure out, he doesn't play any sharps/flats so it's just a matter of dicking around in C major, you can see his hand positioning pretty well at about 1:15.. He plays part of the keyboard melody (A, G, F, D) then he plays C and E together, and D and F together (diads, I dont think his left hand is completing the chord its just holding the melodica) and I think he does some variations throughout the song, but it's pretty easy and fun to play. Melodica rules, glad you're into it!

gay sperm, that's what sumner requested to keep his vocal chords smoothly...

Great song Ians version is better but this one? Can you say "cocaine"
cactusjokers 3 years ago
The version with Ian, even though it's poor quality, has so much more depth and emotion than this. However, this is a really good version. I like it slower.

Why is hooky playing the drums?

I remember watching this at the time and thinking Steve IS playing it at the right speed, Steve deserves a medal for not going over & chinning him. Steve is the best musician in the band by miles. Bernard's either on something or hungover, all over the place. Still the best thing ever on Rock around the clock though, they all have that "they're all watching at us" expression like they think it's about to fall apart. Excellent stuff.

why does the speaker say gay sperm on it, why is Bernard telling an experienced drummer what to do, and why is he playing this with a Melodica... therefore this song is great.
kraftwerk456 3 years ago
I know that the speakers were not New Order's. They were Radio 1 speakers. I think it was a joke by the guy who ran the station.

Play it slow

in my opinion they play this song too fast...it's about death and eternity, it would deserve to be slower i think

wow - totally awesome, i remember vividly watching this live back in 84, was it a peel session?, either way, i always remember the lead singer getting pissed about the tempo, and the drummer just ignoring him, lol. awesome video, youtube rocks!

Has anyone heard the Bush cover of this from "The Crow - City of Angels" soundtrack? I hate to say this, but I prefer it to the original.

Barney was off his fookin head. Hope Steve had some words for him afterwards! IALP is supposed to be dirge-like, not the 3X tempo version here!
