im a junior and last year i jumped 9 ft. my first day jumping! this is ahmazing tho i wish i could learn how to properly hold the pole and jump to get better
@Pentontration i wouldn't make statements like that. just sayin. a beginner may take it the wrong way. just cuz you smash a pole, doesn't mean it's good. i'm 5'8" and 160lbs. i SMASH 14'7" 185...but i get ZERO lift. haha
yes, csufsully you are 100% correct do not lock out your bottom arm new vaulters. this is called blocking and is very bad it keeps you from jumping higher. to jump really high you must first master pole vaulting on a strait pole and then implement those techniques to a bent pole. good luck
yes and no. if u watch olympic jumpers they lock out their bottom arm on take off but thats cus they got huge freakin poles. beginners arent so yeah its like impossible for a beginner to lock out the bottom arm unless ur on a pole way under ur body weight in which case ur dumb and need to quit.
dude no one needs you negativity, my freshman year i polevaulted with a locked arm on poles 30 pounds above my weight with a blocked arm, its fixed now of course but its doable
I couldn't agree more, I wanted badly to bend the pole my first year so without knowing what I was doing I blocked out my bottom arm. In the long run it took me months to fix it and I still cannot get all the way back because I still leave pressure on that arm.
@theflyingvaulter106 dude I was just reading comments randomly and I saw this. I was in 7th grade and made 10 ft. then that summer I made 10 3 at the aau national track and field meet and won. and there are many other kids in 7th grade that go higher....
since when do people offer pole vaulting to 7th graders and to be vaulting 10 and be in 7th grade you need some major upper body strength and unless you weight train like every friggen day, it would be impossible...i just dont believe that
@theflyingvaulter106 I live in texas and i have been pole vaulting since sixth grade, it doesnt require big muscles are vigorous training, its technique and your ability to understand the sport and because of it im on a vaulting scholarship
@theflyingvaulter106 dude when i was in 7th grade i was doing 10ft also.. its not that surprising.. the winning vault at state when i was in 7th grade was 11'6.. i got 7th place.
i think that america is dumb for not using the metric system. I mean it works so much better and fuk all i us in math class is the metric system anyway i mean shit i hardly ever us inches.
i think you'll have to do some serious fixing to jump that high in one year. I recommend Rick attig's pole vault camp in kansas. Best camp i've ever been too
10'6 as a sophomore tbh isn't that great. I'm a sophomore going 13'6. 10'6 would tie you for 51st best sophomore and 206th best vaulter in the state. Also it depend on what size pole you're using. If you made 10'6 on an 11 ft pole, that's decent. 12 is pretty avarage, and 13+ is poor.
Widening your grip and "locking out your bottom arm" is not the way to learn how to bend. All it will do is cause the athlete to block out and inhibit them from ever swinging to the pole.
I didn't mean that it wasn't PART of correct technique, I meant that it's never good advice for a newer vaulter to hear. If they get the idea of "locking-out" stuck in their head, it can easily become a problem causing them to never release pressure (collapse).
this is about the worst possible advice you could ever give to a beginner. people like you that try and coach and have no idea how to do it correctly really piss me off. bending the pole is not how you jump higher. it is a result of better technique and faster more efficient runs.
@killerboy1154 well of course. I'm just saying you dont ever TRY to bend the pole. using the right technique will bend the pole naturally. the best advice i've ever gotten is "dont control the pole, the minute you try to be the master of the pole it will throw you on your ass. Let the pole do the work, have the right form, and just go along for the ride" before fiberglass poles guys were jumping 14' on a steel bar. I dont know if you've ever tried that but it doesn't bend...
@mightym0use23 wrong bitchx2, it is not the bend that shoots you up, its the correct transferring of energy from horizontal to vertical by means of the pole. The bend is the pole reacting to the forces being placed upon it. I can bend the shit out of a pole by overstriding, not jumping off the ground, and pulling down on the pole (in the plant of course). Will i clear any higher? Not a chance, but i would be much more likely to impale myself with fiberglass shards. Video evidence is on my side.
ok seriously americans. i live in the USA too, but you guys are being dicks. you are making us look bad. we may or may not get the world record soon, no one can know that.
Lets all just agree that the USA has some good polevaulters along with many other countries in the world
I saw this live, and it's hard to capture the feeling of excitement that went through the whole crowd when he made the height. Oregon T&F fans are the best out there, period, and Hayward is the best single venue in the USA for any track meet.

6.04 m - Puts Walker 5th on all-time list behind Bubka, Hooker, Tarasov, Markov.
Bubka still has 6.15 from 1993 but Hooker is getting pretty close.

agreed completely.
one should first learn to run and plant the pole before taking off.
but getting invert is what get u higher reguardless how much the bend.
punkxcore93 2 years ago
@darthnebett actually if you dont bend the pole you wont catch the ride of the un bending therefore you will not vault as higher...
