  • I was in Germany during the cold war training in Graf. I took the cover of a generator that was made of a thick canvas and slept under it in winter. I don't know what it was soaked in but it stood up on its own. I slept good that night without a sleeping bag and just my field gear.

  • Do you think that this is the same stuff they make the dry duck and frog togg rain suits from? How do you think dry bags made of tyvec would hold up, or would you chance it?

  • "wrapped dick" hilarious

  • Great video - I have also used both sleeping bags while serving & I agree the old school is the way to go. I also like the tyvek cover = good stuff. Keep up the good work.

    :)

  • @JHypers More time on your hands? hmmm...I have a 3 kids and all their school and sports activities to navigate and a wife, 3 business' to run, a house to take care of and a 16 thousand foot warehouse on 5 acres to maintain, a host of weekly volunteer duites at church, animals to feed and water, and the list goes on. I try to post helpful info based on LIFE EXPERIENCE in the field all over the USA and several different countries on youtube and I have still have to read stupid shit here

  • @Yankeeprepper That was a Good One Coach !!!

  • This was a first rate video and perhaps one of the best info I've seen on saving money on such a useful item. 5 Stars!

  • I just bought three for 80.00 didn't know what I bought sound like I got a great deal

  • Haha I also like the 5.56 comment, 5.56 is for women and tacti-noobs. 7.62x39<3

  • Cool video man, thanks!

  • Interesting. I have been using tyvek for a shooting hide. It provides a good wind break in winter and can be painted for whatever environment and add some tie on cloth (in the right colour) for extra cammo. I have now made 4 in different shades. They can be a bit warm in mid summer.

    Thanks, Rob.....

  • Have you thought about adding material(cutting out larger area) and making a bivy tent, versus a bivy bag? You'd probably end up with a highly effective tent at or under a pound and at a tenth the cost.

  • @rangermonk I have never made a "Tent" with TYVEK...YET!! I actually cut a Teepee type tent out of the roll I have and bought a 5 foot marine zipper off ebay. I am in the middle of putting everything together ( I am sealing the seems with binding material) I going to do a vid about it when I take it winter camping for the first time.

  • Just getting into a little prepping, beyond just extending my usual hurricane prep. Tyvek looks like an essential. Thanks for demonstrating this. You seem to be one of the most matter-of-fact and practical persons on YouTube in this field.

  • Yankee, I know previously you've said you are a taller guy. Do you notice if you fit better in the older style bag vs. the modular? I'm 6'4" and have the modular. There's no way I can fully zip myself up in the modular. Thanks for yet again another great video and tip.

  • Oh yeah I get it :), wish I had seen this before having a couple of holes burned in my bag, would have way made one of these for that kind of cost, could never justify those hundred and fifty buck bivy bags. Great idea!

  • Do you have a model number for the old school bag? I'd like to try and find one.

    Thanks

  • @MotorCityPrepper Military NSN Number 8465-01-033-8057, Hope things are good with you Bro.

  • @Yankeeprepper Doing pretty good. Thanks for asking and thanks for the NSN.

  • @Yankeeprepper very confusing trying to buy the old version ..can we get a close up on the tags are different ? i noticed my new N-3B coat was outsourced by china ...the coat is slowly falling apart buttons and the pockets are coming un done ..been less than 4 months , my original N-3B coat ive had is made in the usa and it 100 times more durable .. shame on ALPHA INDUSTRIES for outsourcing american jobs.

  • You mention being able to paint the Tyvek. Does that hurt the breathability? Any specific paint that you'd recommend?

  • Yankee ingenuity, gotta love it. Thanks for a really informative post.

  • Two thumbs Up. Great info, thanks!!

  • have you thought of doing a layer of mylar on the inside to act like a spaceblanket? iv only heard of people doing this but never done it myself. nice vid

  • I posted a wanted ad on Kijiji for some leftover Tyvek scraps. I lucked out and someone had a 9' roll with enough material left for 1 or 2 bivy sacks. Looking forward to trying this out.

    Thanks for the vid.

  • This is just an amazingly awesome idea... THANK YOU sooo much for sharing this!

I cant wait to get to making my own :)

    Thanks again!

take care and hope all is well :D

  • good stuff yankee! never even though about this one! plus the white makes you a ninja in the snow! and even more so after you wash it!

  • Thank you very much for this!

  • great idea

  • Just got mine finished! Wow, it really exceeded my expecations. Thanks Yankee.

  • Heck of an idea!

  • I agree when out packing gear weight is big issue . I bought a zero degree sleeping bag, Nice side it only weight 5lbs, but its not water tight. Doing your modification will help seal the bag but also make it breathable. Thanks for this helpful tip.

  • Great idea brother! Thanks.

  • (UPDATE) i fixed my zipper by replacing the slider with one i found in a misfit toys box at my surplus shop (price 25 cents) and i patched a small hole and poped it in the dryer to fluff it up again and make it not smell like a 40 year old bag. thanks for the video, your awsome.

  • Huh? I never thought of using tyvek. When you put it in the washer did you use soap or just plain water?

  • Great vid, Thanks YP

  • If they ever start building again you can often get half rolls of this in construction dumpsters, I have one I picked up that way. Check right after you see the house in wrap.

  • Great video Yankee! I also use the modular sleep system and you are so right about protecting your investment. Keep the faith and the good works!

  • excellent idea. Thanks!

  • great, idea, I have my next project. is it sturdy enough to use snaps along the trim in addition to velcro? I would imagine you can sew + sticky back the velcro to tydex as well.

  • Great video and idea YP! I actually was thinking of making a bivy bag myself over the last few months. I used to work as a handyman for a local stitching company and they used to make fully enclosed awnings for a mobile medical unit as the recovery area for patients. The material is a tent/tarp like material in desert tan with a mylar backing on the inside of it. I've got a 10' x 15' (approximately) piece! I think it would make a great bivy or very lightweight shelter!

  • @VTsheepdog Also... to anyone wondering about the durability of the Tyvek: Why do you not have a sleeping pad under you? If you are in a cold climate this is a necessity as most of your body heat is actually lost into the ground! If you have the sleeping pad under you as you should, then you shouldn't be worried about sticks poking holes in the material, as the pad will take the brunt of the damage!

  • @Shogun5561776 I am not sure about the dying Tyvek. Heavy paint would effect the breathability. I have lightly painted bags before and they look pretty good. If Tyvek would take dye, I believe this would be a better option for dark colors.

  • tyveck is also used for chemical spay suits so in a chemical based shtf situation it will provide minor protection

  • all outdoor information can be useful at some point. Great video man

  • Not to mention that Tyvek has chemical resistant qualities against certain agents.

  • Well put together. 18D? Hmmm Good commo skills and you have command of the facts in all that you instruct. Thanks.

  • Excellent comparison YP, good to hear your thoughts and experience, I'll be sharing that with my customers. I sell both of the military bags in my store, a bit cheaper than the prices mentioned, but the new one is definitely 2x the price of the old school one. I love the new style one better cause I'm horribly allergic to goose down.

  • What a sweet deal thanks for sharing God Bless

  • Thanks for your knowledge. I appreciate the lengthy, detailed response I got for my question. I haven't received the old-school one yet that I ordered, but I do have the new style one that the Army let(sort of) me keep when I ETS'ed in 2010. Thank you Uncle Sam :-)

  • thanks , what a great idea.

  • I'm with you on the tarp and bivy. Much more efficient than a tent. Thanks for the Tyvek tip.

  • Thanks for the video! Can you provide us with the NSNs for the various bags in this video?

  • That's supercool! Great value stuff.

The carpet tape I know is heat activated, is that non heat activated tape? Sorry if that's a stupid question, just couldn't be sure. Did you attach the Velcro with the same tape?

Is this the same stuff they make those tough postal bags from?

  • how do you keep the asshats out? is it me or are there more asshats that wana be preppers, than real people learning how to survive? Well not bad, only 10 down dip ships on this vid.

I know off topic. sorry. just had to say it.

  • Nice

  • Brilliant! Thanks Yankeeprepper.

  • Excellent video. As a retailer of all Tyvek products I can tell you that it is truly awesome stuff. I'm not trying to sell it to anyone here so much as agreeing that in my experience, it has nearly as many uses as duct tape in its various forms. I'm hoping to make a tent/bivy out of the newer radiant barrier roof wrap to see how well it performs in extreme cold conditions if I can ever afford it.

  • I recently picked up the modular system for 150 in VERY good condition. I like the modular system (it was a bit tight though). Laughed my ass off at the condom references. I like the system for most of my camping.

I'm thinking about the ECW for our crazy New England winters. However, I still do like the modular system.

  • Great job, excellent info! That will definitely protect you even if the bag was a POS!

  • that's pretty neat yank

  • ok, that was a great info vid. Good thinking, I have never thought of that. Quick question? How flamable is it?

Thanks for putting this vid out man.

  • someone gave me one of the 'old school' bags about 4 years back. I have to say I LOVE it! I went to a boarding school a couple of years back and got in the habit of sleeping in a bag every night. Now I just leave my window open at night in the winter....

  • Yankee...I'm with you and going old school. I use my grandfathers bag from WW2 and it has never let me down in any condition. Trust me I have tested its limitations

  • Great video, and info I plan to use. What paint has worked best for you on these?

  • Using the arrow for a pointer brings back memories of my high school English teacher

  • What a fantastic idea! Thanks YP!

  • Very cool - will have to share this with the guys

  • Wow, I really like that old school down bag. The few for in my area are expensive. Based off of your great review, I may have to look harder and trust it to sight unseen shipping. (Ugh, I even hate saying that). Thanks for your review. Thumbs up.

  • Great info!

  • That's a great tip.

P.S. Do you think the older recommended sleeping bag fit inside of a sleep carrier pouch on a MOLLE rig?

  • That is a great idea. Thanks man.

  • You.done.it.again.hoss.

  • ill send u 10 bucks if u would make one and send it to me ..pm im not kidding thanks love the videos

  • goretex for the common man...

  • Awesome; thanks for sharing!

  • great video... i like the old bags too. the only thing i dislike about them is the feathers poking me looking like a chicken when i wake up.

  • @parlusk1791 lol

  • Great video Yankee.. I prefer the old style myself but the weight sucked on long marches.. I told my neighbor who was looking for bags for his family, that they are the best bang for your buck.. Again thanks for sharing your knowledge..

  • An old friend gave me one of those old skool bags 12yrs ago. Down by the toes it has EXTREME COLD stenciled on it. I keep it stashed in my rig during the winter so if I break down out here in the boonies I'll be bitchin" bout how hot I was in that bag all night. Used it for a cushion and slept in a cheap bag at -5 degrees and the frost was all around where I was but I was toasty all night. Thanks for the tip. Gonna make spares and stash em next to the Pool Shock.

  • Gee, that new home they're building down the street from me is suddenly missing a piece of TYVEK from the middle of one of the outside walls. I wonder what happened there?

  • Thanks YP for another informative, great video, on the usages of Tyvek. Opens up all kinds of possibilities. I have a huge regard for your sharing of knowledge to the world of internet users. I respect men like you. Thanks again and God bless you and yours.

  • Hmmmm I'm thinking this would work well on my kids teepee I made them. The last wind storm ripped the trap right off of it

  • Great video. I like people who know how to think. That's 99% of prepping.

  • i have the same sleeping bag and have been here thinking i needed an upgrade because its old and my zipper is broken. now im just going to fix the zipper. thanks for the video.

  • very good well done...a real complete review. can't beat the old school bags. both have their applications. amazon has some good deals on the new bags.

  • YP, you washed and dried the bag, but all those wrinkles! You obviously draw the line at ironing! ;-) I happen to have some Tyvek left over from siding my house. I'll be holding on to it now.

  • This is cool, I got a few tyvek envelopes to make drawstring bags (got the tip from ITSTactical), but now I'll keep my eye open for tyvek on craigslist. thanks for the great video!

  • I watched this video and LIKED it. Then made a point to come back later and tell you this is a great idea. I have never seen this Tyvek idea. Thanks for taking the time to share the hard earned experience you have.

  • Sweet! Thanks YP! That is brilliantly simple. Keep up the good work. God Bless!

  • You said that you have painted your Tyvek. Do you know from experience or have an opinion on whether the material could be dyed without compromising it's effectiveness? Thank You for posting this video, it gave me a few new ideas!

  • Thank you! This is an awesome idea, I cant wait to try it out. I was just looking for light weight sleep options to strap on the front of a motorcycle this summer, I think I just found it.

  • that was a great idea.

  • Embers...Does Tyvek burn easily? Just curious.

Love this idea though. Nice job.

  • Awesome! Never thought about using Tyvek. I wonder if you could stain it a different color. Thanks for sharing!

  • Great info...thanks for sharing

  • great idea thanks, noe just to find some

  • The new ones are kinda of snug. Thanks for this video and pointing out all the key points on both bags. I do believe that a sleeping bag that can help you survive the elements is the main thing that is going to keep you alive. Thanks again enjoy your channel.

  • Thanks for the video. I think that's a realy good idea and I will have to make some this weekend.

  • Very cool...I can think of 50 uses for Tyvek off the top of my head right now!! Seen it, never studied it, Thanks for sharing!!

  • AND PLEASE... keep that poker to yourself !

  • LOL lil guys do like 5.56. it cant penetrate a 4x4 bah

  • Thanks for taking the tome to post this. Grest imformation. God Bless..........

  • I never got cold in my old ECW bag.

  • As always, great information.

  • Wow. That pointer just gave me a very bad flashback to Catholic school. Two thumbs up.

  • @yankeeprepper I agree with you about the two types of bags, I much prefer the old style. I always made sure any clothes or boots that I would put on after sleeping were inside the bag in the field, much better to have warm boots...etc to put on then cold ones. The old bag with the new type bags bivy cover works well in those really wet situations. Nice job with the DIY bag too my friend. I think BP needs to be poked with the pointer again, lol.

  • I've used the old ECW in northern Wisconsin durring a cold spring fishing trip. The temp got down to 23 degrees the frist night. I never got cold once, but my buddy had a newer style $100 bag from bass pro and he froze his butt off, lol. Imho the old amry style bags are the best bang for your buck. Great vid, YP.

  • @mojsmg Sorry typo army, lol

  • i like the modular system thats what i used during my SERE training. are they in ACU or are they in multicam?

  • Fantastic vid. I always assumed the new bags where way better based on the temperature ratings but you just destroyed that thought when you revealed how differently they are rated. Thanks for sharing!

  • Something about the pointer / killing instrument kept me quiet in your class today

  • @MrPhsyco97 Can you find another venue to annouce your issues. Perhaps a chat forum would better suit you?

  • @MrPhsyco97 What the heck does your comment have to do with this video???????

  • I'm impressed!

  • Great! thank you!

  • Hang it out a window on a windy day, It'll get good and soft. Great idea, that stuff is awesome-

  • So much better than my current garbage bag method, Thank you.

  • That is huge point: I want to be dry, so many reviews people complain about the lack of breathability and wake up soaking wet even naked. So its so hard to figure out which stuffing works for us hot blooded types.I had a down one too damm hot and compressed to nothing sucked. Good useful info, thanks teacher! God Bless man.

  • Great idea. Thanks for sharing. Too bad they dont make TYVEK in drab green!

  • @mskyprepper You can camo up your tyvek. I usually just leave it white for winter, but you can spray flat camo paint on it.

  • @Yankeeprepper That was a question I had after watching the vid, thanks for adding that info! As always great video, thanks for sharing your knowledge!

  • @Yankeeprepper How would this affect the breathability, and also the flexibility of the tyvek? Is there a brand that would work better than other you could recommend?

  • great video to start off anyone who is interesting to make bivy bag. I would like to make on e but not with that material.

  • Any thoughts on the Wiggy's bags?

  • @greenmarcosu Love my Wiggy's bags. High quality.

  • My buddy gave me that very same bag you love. Excellent video. I will make some when the time comes to get the tyvek I am going to need for my tiny house. *****

  • Mark 2:00 LMAO... classic... being 6-3 plus I know what finding a sleeping bag that works is all about... thanks for the laugh!.... back to the video now...

  • Was wondering if you would mention the "snow camo" aspect! Great vid, I have a few of the old bags myself- Great Idea! Thanks for sharing.

  • AWESOME! I wonder if it would work for a chemical suit. I have saved my chicken feed bags, they seem like Tyvec, was going to put them on an animal shed if we have to build one.

  • Awesome, but how is it with punctures? like a twig and such ripping as a you sleep?

  • @CitySurvivalist TYVEK holds up very well in the field and it's cheap to replace.

  • @Yankeeprepper The carpet tape should work for patches too I would think?

  • Very nice vid.

  • 2nd half of the vid has given me a lot of ideas -so I have to say thankyou, Brother!

  • Another great piece of work. Thank you. Have you ever tried to paint or dye the tyvek?

  • That was extremely helpful. Thank you so much.

  • Just think and wondering...What are your thoughts about making a sleeping bag from 100% wool and tyvek? Put the 100% wool on the outside or inside?

  • Sweet video. Would tyvek make a good footprint?

  • @KSPrepper1 Tyvek makes great DIY lightweight tarps, hammocks, TENTS, ground cover etc. You can buy grommets cheap on Ebay too.

  • Great tip! Thanks for sharing.

  • Tyvek is awesome! My wallet is made of tyvek!

  • Very informative video. Pays to do research on sleeping bags before you buy one. Love the Tyvek sleeping bag cover. Thank you for showing us how easy it is to make. If I get a chance to go over night camping I need the lightest back pack I can get by with. My big plan would be to load up a back pack with what I would need and have hiking boots on to break in before I hit a trail and walk the 8 blocks to work and back every day for a week or two just to get the feel of it.....Paula

  • You should do more of these types of videos; you put out good realistic info. Also, thanks for the yogurt recipe I’ve been making it for about a year now. Tastes better and I can limit the sugar that goes into it.

  • thank you

  • That is to cooool !! sweet idea. Thanks for the tip.

  • coooool tip !

  • I always got good sleep in my issue medium size, even on freezing bivouacs. A dick in a condom, ha! you guys kill me )~

  • 4 hours sleep is a full nights sleep in the Army...laugh.

  • @noudo25 yep, that's true

  • Excellent

  • Great video. A wrapped dick in it. LOL McDonald's special, Gimme a large plate. Achoo. Ron Paul 2012. Free Bananas. Be Safe

  • Excellent!

  • I better go buy stock in sleeping bag companies, after this video hits the market the shares are going nothing but up.. up.. up

  • great idea!
