GR4 has a FLIR pod on the left side by the nose gear & a LRMTS pod on the right,GR1 only has the LRMTS pod.Also GR4 has had the left Mauser cannon omitted.Also the centerline station on the belly pylons are used,these were used to carry nukes or drops on the GR1.

Eurofighter wont replace the Tornado the Tornado is a bomber with twice the range of any fighter aircraft and able to take off from short runways. Only the intercepter version of the Tornado will be replaced as that was a termpory aircraft till the Eurofighter was ready.
SpecialForce982, the tornado is like the Eurofighter, it was a joint British and German project, and again like the Eurofighter, Britain has quite a few more of them than anyone else! and btw now we are in a joint project with the US for that F-35 lockheed/BAE systems plane! can't WAIT til i join the RAF and fly these planes! Why do film and video makers insist on putting in a musical soundtrack? The sound of an aircraft engine and its assosiated noises is as much a part of the experience as seeing the aircraft! Ditch the damned music guys ........... PLEASE!!!!!!
@tasoscorsair The Tornado's IFF actually malfunctioned and two pilots did not noticed it. The truth is that the flaw was the aircraft itself. Since the Patriot missile did not pick up the IFF from the Tornado, the US soldiers thought it was a Iraqi missile and launched a missile against the Tornado jet, killing both crewmembers.
Hopefully though it won't happen again as technology and cooperation improvement.
The Coalition Forces should improve their coordination and teamwork with better communications and mission updates. This is one of the causes in friendly fire is that poor communication.
RIP for the pilots who got killed on a frienldy fire of the Patriot missile. Friendly fires is always present specially in a major war. I hope they will improve war plans and coordination and communications between forces to minimized this.
I don't think the pilots spotted the Patriot missile, after all they weren't expecting any missile threat in the area they are flying. So they must have died unknowingly. God bless their souls. A US fighter was also hit friendly with the Patriot missile and the pilot is killed. 2 UK pilots and 1 US pilot was killed by a friendly fire Patriot during the Gulf.
The patriot missile have advance radar and tracking systems. It uses passive electronically scanned array (PESA, meaning it doesn't have to turn on it's radar on active mode to track an aircraft that has it's radar or radio turned on. The missile itself is guided with the main radar system on the ground. So there's no way the missile could have been detected with RWR, it might be detected with an early IR warning system, if it carries it, but that could also not be effective.
The patriot is one very advance missile, especially the latest upgraded version. This missile is very hard to detect, if ever the target will only know that there's a radar system on the ground but they will not know if they are been tracked and engaged with a missile. Even if they can spot the Patriot missile, it won't be easy to ivade it , even with a use of chaffs and electronic jamming and counter-measures. The best chance those pilots would have survived is detecting the missile and ejects.

They're GR1's & F-3's,not GR4's...Spent 4 years working on them in RAF Germany in the late 80's.
