and remember this is a demo, if this was seagal in a real fight with your average attacker can you imagine what seagal would do to him? that is the whole point of aikido, MMA guys train to fight other fighters, martial arts was never meant for such things, i dont mind MMA but when you all start insulting a martial art like aikido it pisses me off, because you put aikido in MMA something it was never meant for and because it dont work so good you all insult it, shame on you lot.
@Brady2k10 I mean really bro I've studied Aikido and MMA is just two different worlds, Aikido is more of a self defensive martial arts basically where on-coming attackers come at you with no openings you just do what you gotta do to dismantle your foe before he/she lays the smack down with any type of weapon. In MMA nah it won't work.
@MrMyroner To much pain involved in Seagal's Aikido? Aikido is an incredably painful style. Techniques like nikkyo, kote gaeshi, sankyo and so on were devised to shatter joints. If aikido didn't have pain involved then it wouldn't be a martial art. You need to feel the technique while training to understand it's power, there's no point in being soft. In joint manipulation, it's the pain that subdues the attacker. Aikikai is the source of all aikido, no others would exist without it.
@KurtCobain198666 origanal aikido was meant to be a peacefull harmless way and the 1st one is traditional aikido which is teh closest to the aikido O'sensei meant it to be
@MrMyroner ok so ueshiba taught knife defence. You have a 6ft guy come towards you with a knife, but you''ve got to use kote gaeshi without hurting him. You're missing the point of aiki completely. How are you meant to bring down an agressive attacker without hurting them? Kokyu techniques won't always work, you have to use joint manipulation, which by there very design, is supposed to be painful. Tell me how you apply nikkyo without it harming the attacker?
@MrMyroner I think what you mean is that aikido isn't supposed to cause long lasting damage, like paralysis or even death. And you'd be right. But think about what you're saying. Aikido is supposed to be harmless? As in cause no pain? So why implement painful techniques? Why not use 100% kokyo? Have you seen Moriteru Sensei's demos? He's shiho nage and nikkyo are visually painful. You're twisiting aikido into all art and no martial. It's designed to bring a guy down using joint pain and kokyo
@elvisontour95 Aikido is NOT an evolution of judo, thats just crazy talk!! Aikido is an evolution of jujitsu if anything. It's a composite of a few styles of jujitsu mainly diato ryu jujitsu and sword techniques, Aikido is also far more advantagous to a smaller man because the smaller man has a lower centre of gravity
@riastradh2 you are wrong aikido is made of aikijutsu by morihei ueshiba---juijitsu has somethings similuar to aikido but aikido is spiritual tehnique and juijitsu is not
@DzikoHaris ah... read my post again and you'll see I said nothing wrong. you fail to see the obvious. Aikido (as you say) is made up of aikijujitsu(of ueshiba making),true but thats just the name of one the evolutions of what later became Aikido. Thats pre WW2 aikido. Ueshiba's dominant influence technique wise was diato ryu jujitsu his spiritual influence are from other sources, both together became aikido but it still has its technique roots in jujitsu, thats just fact.
@elvisontour95 I think it's easier to move people alright when your bigger, but I wonder are we just using more strenght. I have the same problem in Japan. They're mostly smaller than me, but I actually find it harder to do many of the basic kata properly becasues I have to try and get down so low.
Steven Seagal did the aikido popular. His techniques is very excellente, but I have to say that irimi nage is diferent. He dont go to back oponente, he does in front, it is uses more of hand than the hip to throw the oponnente. His defenses againts knife are very good. I liked of immobilization with leglock.
@nikrok1 Take a look at the hairline on top. Notice how 20 years ago, he had a lot less hair than he does today, at almost 60 years of age. I wonder why...
the person attacking him is doing all the work. in japanese ju jitsu we do alot of wrist and momentum techniques just like this... and it only looks nice when your working with someone that knows how to throw themselves.
you're absolutely right man. It's essential for him to flip, otherwise his wrist would go to places where his body cant follow. Of course you as a ju jitsu practitioner should understand this more than most of the other posters.
only negative comment i've ever read is that Seagal shihan goes through the neck too much with his iriminage. i'm wondering if he's just making too small a movement to see or if he really is kinda muscling through on that one. gotta say though, i love his kotegaeshi.
@Bigboss5 This is just my opinion. SS is a really tall person, so if the majority of his nage's are shorter than him, I think that he does an extra push with his irimi's in order to reach their off-balancing point. I have a tall British friend in my dojo who has this same problem.
didnt he abuse multipul wives and doesn't he have no relationship with his son kintaro yeah hes lead a great life
Rixon Gracie once said no one will talk about you side control at you funeral they will remember your character above your technique and if they dont you failed in life
Their are so many people who dislike him, for various reasons, but when he was in his prime he was so damn good. He is still "someone who came before me" or my sensei indirectly and I respect him for his style and his abilities.

@fei83 he's 6ft 3. There aren't many people the same size as Seagal

@fei83 watch how low he gets. In Aikido the shorter person actually has more of an advantage than someone bigger.
