  • I am very happy to see the vidoe after you give this Fritjof Capra, The Systems View of Life

  • I Love The Video It Can Increase My Knowledge In this first lecture of the course, I would like to give you an outline of the new understanding of life that is now emerging at the forefront of science. As I mentioned before,

  • Steady I Really Like This Video I would like to give you an outline of the new understanding of life that is now emerging at the forefront of science

  • Good, I like that you share this video, I wish success always In this first lecture of the course, I would like to give you an outline of the new understanding of life that is now emerging at the forefront of science

  • Your Video Is Very Useful Sharing In this first lecture of the course, I would like to give you an outline of the new understanding of life that is now emerging at the forefront of science. As I mentioned before, it is a conception of life based on systemic thinking and some of the new concepts and mathematical techniques of complexity theory

  • This is the most boring video I've ever seen---his language is overly complicated--any worthwhile concept should be able to be expressed with simple language. Call me stupid...

  • I liebe und das Tao der Physik und die Wendezeit.

  • So long, humans and thanks for all the fish!

  • a beautiful mind...The Turning Point is still an amazing masterpiece.

  • Fritjof Capra is teaching at Schumacher College, Devon, UK, again this autumn on a course titled 'Ecoliteracy: First Principles for Radical Change'

For more details please go to the College website -

  • Let's accept that we are all interconnected. Many of us know this is a fact. Life has brought us to this point and if we interfere and damage this system, life breaksdown. We must live an integral life with nature and breakdown the financial conglomorates who disregard this fact.

  • @wishIdpaidattention the rest of the world is very comfortable with this fact, western society does not consider the interconnection of nature in it's decisions. Maybe the population, but the leadership throughout history from the time of the druids has not considered the cost nature nor human life in it's decision. Until another civilization is the dominant civilization, and hopefully one that has a history of connection to nature, this is all talk.

  • Great!

  • This new way of thinking about social institutions and what sustaintabilty really means are fantastic. The vision of a future of cooperation, networkings and web of life are so promissing. I'm reading Capra's "ecoliteracy" and it's helping me a lot with my work with enviromental education in Brazil. I like it very much

  • Fritjof Capra is a unique genius and maverick researcher on systems theory and the integration between the Western and the Eastern scientific worldviews. His books have enriched me beyond measure, which is why I review them and discuss them in my writings. I also write about his unique scientific genius, comparing him to Leonardo and Einstein, in my newest book 'Do You Love Einstein?'.

I believe Capra has merited to receive a peace nobel prize as well as a nobel prize for deep ecology.

  • @ipublica i do not love einstein but capra and sagan and da vinci yes

  • Is he talking about creating a biosphere in outerspace, didn't they already try that?

  • Genius

  • sound more like a proposal

  • gah..i have to watch this for my GISAT class...i can't even get passed the first 30 seconds

  • You have to watch youtube videos for class? and complain about it?!

  • Yes.

  • I guess that this approach just doesn't match your "skill set".

  • I guess not....whatever that means.

  • = "Not your thing"

  • I sympathize, I'm supposed to watch a flick (for a class) called Mindwalk this guy produced and I am having trouble following him on this diatribe.

  • my man

  • Tao of Physics is a fantastic book

  • @Jyotinanda108 My Favourite :)

  • Nature as an irganic whole may be a reality, but it is definitely inimicable to life. All life forms ultimately disappear whether you think them to be or otherwise. This earth has enough matter to support life, it depends upon us how we utilize these resourcesa and how speedily

  • The essential link between nature, science and social structures is engineering. The concepts would be useful to design new structures for sustainability and for life processes to go on in a healthy manner.

  • I'll try to answer extempor in limited #of characters allowed. Capra begins with characterized structure and ends with structure therefore. The "web" of life in full bloom is not dissected into numbers. The number 2 is a convenient fiction, useful dependent upon intent and purpose--and not just...individual (?) intent...or finite purpose. answers lie in this...direction.

  • I am not saying that structure is to be avoided. But there are severe syntax errors that we then perpetuate and manifest. The structure Capra refers to already pre-exists non locally as one thing, which we may choose to forever partially address with numerals. It is self evident that when one has (for instance) 2 cups

There are NOT 2 instances of the original cup. There are similar (somewhat) objects that occupy one space and then another.

  • As some one integrated engineering, economy and environment for water development in 1977 for a world conference , iam ahead of frontier scientists whop were interested reductionism. Sustainable development i contributed more than 2 decades ago also a frontier in complexity theory and appications.

  • This is intellectual blablaism. Kapra may have identified the systemic nature of the natural but is deep in the mechanistic paradigm, the cause of our alienation from it. Evolution that underpins nature, that we are an intrinsic part of is far more powerful than our minds constructions. Far better to dis-establish the human brains assumptions that its constructs are worthy, to recognise were not as clever as we think we are, and to re-establish the essential congruence we see in other animals.

  • The key concept i have grasped is that new kind of science should evolve in this century, where distinction between discplines will cease. Therefore a new language should grow, shared among scholars and crosssciplinary models to read reality should be devised.

    ----P

  • I agree but up to a certain extent - we need a creative disonance, or a corrective adjustive process - Kapra has interesting parallels with peter bugers book - The Theory of the Avant-garde.

  • People should know that everything is connected. Somehow, many still believe that mind and body are different things, the same way they judge social and material aspects.

That's nice to have people like Capra helping to clear such distorced visions.

    Nice video!! Ecological philosophy, aways!!

  • "everything is connected"

not everything, some are. and these relations have to be discovered.

  • could he think of indonesian environment by the time he speaking

  • i do believe the messages are vital for the sustainability of the planet if we, human beings, really want to prolong their existence therein. Besides, i really find some comments very interesting and which is the reflection of our daily life that apart from fiasco nothing constructive, positive and loving-kindness can be achieved within our social institutions and structures. What a global drama of life!

  • Am I missing something, or was that a basic biology and common sense lesson. I don't think he has an anchor in reality.

  • I met Fritjof Capra in Liverpool at a conference, and shook his hand. I was VERY honored to meet this great man.

  • Good for you, but I'd better read his books rather than shaking hands.

  • stoopid self-inflated git

  • Please, do not treat yourself so hard. You are a human being, and it's very used to feel that shaking hands or get an autograph is more important that get some knowledge. Be good to yourself

  • why do you judge things so quick and make a fool of yourself for. Do you imagine it might make people respect you?

I dont really see why i should have to explain, or suffer fool gladly, only to say: of COURSE i have read his books! And i have met him and shook his hand, and was part of workshop with him.

Obviously you have learned no intelligence FROM JUST reading his books right?

  • you folks would fall in love in each other if you've met youselves in another situation. Ok. Stop you both right here, and exchange e-mails, msn accounts and have fun!

Life and science if much bigger than this posts...

And of course: if one liked shaking one's hands, it is because he also likes the authors (and for this, one must have read some Capra's book).

    Bye!

    ieBrazil

  • I Love Brazil aye ;)))

  • nice.... I don't know if you're man or a woman, you know (I'm a youngman). But if you are amongst the ones who think of Brazil, just having naked women in mind, you're wrong. Brazil is bigger than that.

Anyway, it's cool to know somedoby likes my fuc.king country...

    Bye!

  • oh dear. all you have to do is click on username and you see me. I do it all the time ;)

I am well aware of the terrible poverty and violence in Brazil, and how many middle class Brazillians dont wanna talk about it...!

I love the MUSIC. not that. and I am Gay...LOL

  • yeap, tnx for the tips... humm I was lazy to click on you username that time... Anyway, if you're a man, but a gay one, seeing your profile won't tell if you're a true man or a 'chick' haha. Kidding. Ok, just saw your profile and you look like a rocker! not a gay person. R u a gay roker sort of thing? Or an intellectual aspirant? Lol u look like master Bob Dylan! A little, at least. Ok. Bye. And yes, you're gay. Saw it just through the way you speak. You're efeminate.

  • and your a cheeky bugger!

  • i have just read this again and am aghast at your utter ignorant mentality.

I mean what the fuck are you doing at a Fritjof Capra thread about such intelligent insight. yet have the mind of a homophobic dickhead. who hasn't even got the decency to keep his narrowminded offensive thoughts private.

what is your problem. wanna tell me? I am really curious as to where you are coming from. why are you treating me with such disrespect?

  • you are totally wrong. I just said a fact: you're efeminate. I did not aplly any moral judgement. You did. Second, I don't know what cheeky bugger means (but it really sounds like a insult, as well as when you call me ignorant... when you don't know myself neither my history of life; you're being precipitated). Third, I apologize you here, if I disrespect you, anyway. If I did, it was not my primordial intention. RIght? Have a nice Sunday.

    ieBrazil

ps: I'm Brazilian. And have no problem...

  • checkout wikipedia~#"Effeminacy is a trait in males that generally contradicts traditional male (masculine) gender roles. It is a derogatory term frequently applied to femininity; or womanly behavior, demeanor, and appearance displayed by a man, typically used implying criticism or ridicule of this behavior (as opposed to, for example, merely describing a man as feminine, which is more neutral).

  • The term effeminate is most often used by people who subscribe to the conventional view that men should conform to traditional masculine traits and behaviors."

Also the Nazis used it in such a way.

Now look mate. I have no problem with you. But to be so personal like that is sure sing of immaturity, and not knowing how to relate to people.

Also it is not good impression of Brazil!

  • tnx for the explanation. But I stay with this: what counts on a situation (and its interpretation) is the intentionality of the speaker, mainly if the speaker is not a native one (that is my case, information which you must have realized here, given that you don't seem to be an altist). Plus: you've mixed up a country (Brazil) with a citizen of it. That's what we in transcendental philosophy calls 'intellectual immaturity', or in Logics: fallacy! Have a nice time.

    ieBr

  • you are not mature person.

    that is a fact.

    have a nice time

  • ok, 'mature' person. Who are you to make such judgement upon me? What do you do? What 'are you'? Another lunatic North American who thinks to be able to tell to others what they are and what they're not? I apologized you in my first reply. That's a mature thing. But you preferred taking the dialog to a strange path. You seem to be alone out there and with no friends, with out anything else to do, and then go to Internet to piss the folks off, persons like me. Ok. You got me. Now, get lost.

    ieBr

  • you started it fool

shit you dont even know when you have dissed some one

    spose you'll want last word.

Listen. a word of advice buster. IF you dont want to upset people then dont fukin do it?

  • You act as if you were (biologically speaking) around 15 years old child. Biologically you age much more than this, we know. But psichologically you probably do age the mentioned one. You're so corrosive that you don't care if the other (here, myself) will understand all what you say. You just say and presuppose that it'll all be understood. You're what we call down here 'enrustido'. Get lost, enrustido, viado, chupa-pau!

  • and you. how long have you hated women and gay people you stupid arsed fuck?

if you were in front of me i'd slap yer stupid brazillian face off. bet your a ruch brazillian who looks down on the poor

    they are typical arseholes

  • ok moral and wise pederast, you listen to me:you really don't know me to say things from my being. So, shut your mouth (you dick sucker) up, go learning how to write in proper English, and get lost. You discuss with everyone around here. You, looser, look like a person with no friends, trying to upset the sociable ones. Go reading a self-improvement stuff to get you out of such well. I don't know what 'arseholes' means. Did you mean 'asshole', you asshole? I'm 18 years old and know 4 languages.

  • ieBrazil:

A lot changes in your head from when you're 18. I'm 23, think a year ago and can't believe how much I've changed. I know that some of what I think now I'll render ignorant in the future simply because I haven't experienced enough life to view it objectively or fully understand the implications behind my assertions. Being a polygot is something to be proud of but has no context in this discussion and the necessity to prove yourself is a frustration with which I can empathsize.

  • At the same time I've realize it serves no purpose for my argument other than making me look like an asshole.

It's like citing a quote from a book in argument with complete disregard for the context, criticisms, or period in which the book was written. It turns the argument into an intellectual circle-jerk and undermines the real discourse.

  • Good point man, congragts. Just remember: yourself has realized you own fallacy (it serves no purpose for my argument other than making me look like an asshole); second, your psychologism and the inference you've made about my language knowledges are not necessarily true. My frustrations may come from different stuff such as complex of inferiority, from you guys, citizens of 1st worls coutries who should have had a better and concised education...

  • try referencing the scientific america article titled "cross roads for planet earth"

  • Capra for president

  • i second that!

  • For if it helps anyone:

a systemic approach to systemic thinking applied to "self producted and self managed" cybernetics systems.

    viabsimetriadivina.blogspot.c o m

  • monism, holons, etc.

  • I've read "The Web of Life", "Ecological Literacy" and "Hidden Connections". He is a very intelligent man and I enjoyed the change in my thinking processes these books brought about.

  • Great job Mr Capra, and thanks for posting this. I hope to use it with my work at the Federation of Canadain Municipalites.
